For anyone interested in the art of photo interpretation, immigration history, radical politics/unionism, and a history of the Mesabi Iron Range, I would heartedly recommend this book. The extensive bibliography and footnotes, alone, are worth the price of the book. Dr. Nemanic has given both the academic world and those interested in the Iron Range much to assimilate. Her interpretation of the interplay of radical politics and unionism and the changing significance of the July Fourth celebrations will challenge more traditional visions/interpretations. The Iron Rangers may be laconic but they certainly were and are not inactive.

If you ever wondered if organic farming can really be as productive as chemical farming, or if it is really better for the environment, then read this book. The author manages to include a lot of scientific data and theory, yet keep everything readable and entertaining, and it will convince you. Beyond addressing the organic farming debate, the book tells the fascinating story of how coffee is grown, and of the indigenous people who grow it. This would be an excellent text for college courses, and also for graduate seminars.

This book is an incredibly accurate medical description of the heart and its works regarding both its successes and failures. It is not only humorous but also very learned and deep. Carter is a wizard with words, their origins and significant meanings. This book could have been written by a poet/doctor such as William Carlos Williams.
The only time I thought he was over the top was his comparision of rodeo clowns to doctors. Not quite fair to rodeo clowns.

This is definitely the best way to learn Arabic in the classroom. As the next book in the series (the first being "Ahlan wa Sahlan"), it definitely complements the train of learning in this particular Semitic language. Highly recommend if you are an intermediate Arabic learner (if you have had at least a full year of study) and especially if your elementary Arabic was taught to you by the book "Ahlan wa Sahlan." Also, if you ever get the chance in your life to meet the extraordinary professor, Dr. Mahdi Alosh, I highly recommend it as well. Enjoy.

A matter-of-fact book with lots of photographs about a male pre-school teacher who gets around in a wheelchair. Understated, highly engaging non-fiction.

-by Jerome Klinowitz-
Since the late 1960s, when novelist John Barth's declared that literature was "exhausted" and our most popular critics agreed at least that the novel was dead, Ronald Sukenick has been patiently proving that there is a great deal of life to be discovered in the form.
"Out" is, as all novels are supposed to be, a study of life.

"Overland to California in 1859: A Guide for Wagon Train Travelers", editted and complied by Lou Bloch is a breezy redaction of guides published at the time of the California Gold Rush. You capture the feeling of venturing west, subject to all the pitfalls you might encounter along the way.
The discussion covers the selection of wagonmasters, provisions, friendly and unfriendly Indians to be found along the way, encounters and business dealing with Mormons. Supplemental to this is a discussion of the growth of San Franscisco from a rump port town to a major city in just 10 years.

The engaging photos in this book are irresistible thanks to Elliott's strong narrative voice; she will lure browsers to their nearest armchairs and turn them into time machines. Elliott will entice, by the merest suggestion in a caption, even the least romantic peruser of this book into a thousand daydreams. Some will awake and go on with their lives, but others will be more securely hooked; they will be prompted to find out more about something only glimpsed, to visit a library, to visit Oxford, to read a novel, or write one. This book is as much a gift to the creative spirit as to the history buff. Those interested in Victoriana and particularly in recreating rooms with some authenticity will find the college interiors circa 1900 themselves worth the price of the book. Among these rare perspectives are the dorm room with its curtained, pillowed alcove and its rocking chairs and the reading room with its tablecloths each anchored by an attractive potted plant. The book concludes with a tantalizing look at ten "notable residents of Oxford" among whom are the infamous Moon sisters, journalist Whitelaw Reid and composer Edgar Stillman Kelley. This is the sort of book you will want to share with friends; for that reason, serious collectors will want to buy two.
