Great reference title on Ohio research

The series by Mr. Schweitzer covering a number of states is an excellent starting point for most researchers as well as a handy reference to have. Mr. Schweitzer begins with a brief historical overview of the state's settlement, geography, industries, migration and the like which helps to paint a picture of what likely drew your ancestors there. Mr. Schweitzer's writing style is very plain and direct and he includes a wonderful county by county listing of resources for each state as well as overall statewide resources and records available at the Federal level. There are undoubtedly books that go into greater detail on each state but the Schweitzer series are a great starting point and well worth the money if you're researching there. His titles usually have to be ordered at local booksellers so Amazon is your best bet at getting these quickly and painlessly. One particular note is that this title was written years ago and some telephone numbers and addresses have changed and some groups or societies may be dormant or closed. Additionally Mr. Schweitzer does not make reference to internet sources or email addresses, which is just as well as they tend to get out-of-date quite quickly. I've gotten considerable use out of this title on Ohio and it to be very helpful.

My son passed all sections of the Tenth Grade Ohio Profiecency Exam. With only a one third pass rate in the state, we feel confident the cards helped. Hollandays cards are an extra special tool because students can set aside cards with information they already know well and concentrate on information that takes more time. Thank you Hollandays for helping my son suceed!

Oxford was planned in 1809 when the Ohio legislature established Miami University. Sandusky was a shipping port on the Great Lakes. Permanent settlers came in 1816. Cholera struck in 1849. Previously there had been smaller outbreaks. Sandusky is noted for making wine.

Springfield is a National Pike town. It was on the route of the Great Ohio Stage Company in Cumberland, Maryland. Steubenville, Marietta and Chillicothe were the mother towns of the state. They are in proximity to West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Marietta is the oldest settlement in Ohio, the pioneer city in the Northwest Territory.

Akron became a center for rubber manufacturing in the first two decades of the 20th century. Cleveland and many of the cities in Ohio such as Youngstown were notable centers of steel, brass and iron making. Organization of the Standard Oil Company in 1870 made Cleveland a force in oil. Tom Johnson was the famous mayor of Cleveland in the Progressive Era.

The book features twenty-three automobile tours-- a thoughtful plan of the WPA Guides. Interesting black and white photographs abound. There are seventeen essays on special topics and nineteen profiles of cities. Coal is worked in the eastern and southern section of the state. Glaciers covered two thirds of the state in the late Cenozoic era.

The first people were known as mound builders. The most advanced mound builder culture is the Hopewell. Among the first historic Indians were the Erie. Others included the Miami and the Shawnee. The Wyandotte, of Iroquois stock, were the most powerful tribe in the Northwest Territory after the Revolution. Also present were the Tuscarora, Seneca, Delaware, Ottawa, Cherokee. Ohio, home of many presidents, is known as a barometer state.

Rogers Clark won the Northwest Territory for the thirteen colonies. Before the Civil War, Lane Seminary in Cincinnati and later Oberlin became centers of anti-slavery activity. Ohio-born writers include James Thurber, Sherwood Anderson and Hart Crane. Ohio has been an area of concentrated and innovative industrial development. Names such as Rockefeller, Wright, Willys, Procter, Gamble, Kroger, Olds, and Kettering are recognizable.

The book describes Finnish and Slovenian families in Ohio and many other cultures and customs of individuals and groups. In buildings Ohio has experienced the gothic style, steamboat gothic, romanesque, Greek revival. When the guide was written a contemporary painter, Charles Burchfield, saw possibilites in the main street of the small towns. A really important writer who began in Ohio is William Dean Howells. The outstanding poet was Paul Laurence Dunbar. There is a chronology at the end of the book.

Better than I expected, the coloration and samplers pictured are truly remarkable. A lot of good basic Ohio history, with maps by county and description of how the state was divided. It is one of my favorite things, and I never get tired of picking it up and reading more about their simple lives.

This well written and concise book is an absolute must-have for any library or individual interested in Ohio legal research. It provides information not only on ways to access current law, but antiquated Ohio law as well. I look forward to a revision.

A MUST HAVE for any lure collector!

This is an awesome book just crammed full of information on lures made by, I think, every company to ever produce a lure in Ohio. I myself am not a "fisherman" (or fisher-lady), but I am interested in collecting antique lures (thanks to my grandfather and brother who are/were HUGE into fishing)...I never realized how much those old fishing lures in my shed were worth until I read Mr. Heston's book (I just collected them because they made me think of my grandfather). This author is obviously a true lover of all things fishing. This book is well written and extremely thorough, an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE for anyone interested in collecting antique fishing lures...or anyone who has an old tackle box collecting dust in a garage, shed, or attic...before you throw out that old tackle you just might wanna check out this book, like me you could find that that old fishing junk is actually a true treasure!!

I am greatly looking forward to reading more titles written by this author!

As a Cincinnati Ohio native and Ohio State alumni, it's always nice to keep in touch with my old stomping grounds. Ohio's not a state with the power and influence it once was, but its geography, culture, and varied architecture still evokes feelings of serenity and nostalgia. I don't think there's a better publishing company that matches my taste in photography than Browntrout. Year after year, I've never seen their quality to dininish or vary. Again, the 2007 "Ohio Places" calendar has selected a visual feast of photos from around the Buckeye state that capture Ohio's varied culture and vistas. Fall was always my favorite time of the year growing up and the November selection is all that I could want in an autumn photo. Winters in Ohio have a quiet tranquil beauty all their own that is celebrated in January's picture of a country road in Amish country. May's "bed barn" photo honoring Ohio's agriculture brings back memories driving Interstate 71 back and from from Cincinnati and Columbus. Anyone who still feels some pride and happiness in anything Ohio-related will get several smiles out this collection of photographs Browntrout has so wisely chosen for 2007.
