Ohio Books

I love football nostaglia, and there are few books better than this. It examines the whole careers of Bobby and Jack Charlton from birth to now. Some great stories here, especially concerning Jack.
Highly recommended.

With "Mechanical Cluster," Patty Seyburn has established, without question, that she is one of the most original and exciting poets writing today. Using the Ford Motor Company's term for the automobile's grouping of warning lights and gauges on the instrument panel as her title and metaphor, Seyburn explores a Detroit childhood to a California adulthood. Growing up, confronting the sometimes confounding adult world, and then (eventually) entering that same world through love and marriage, Seyburn's language is both familiar and elusive. This is a compelling, rich book that makes you feel and think at the same time.

Every small town should have a chronicler as able and meticulous as Gloria Brown. In lesser hands "more than I wanted to know about Medina" would have been my response to anything beyond the title. But coming across the book, with time to kill and absolutely no Medina connection, I was lost in this small, self-contained world from the first pages.

Should I visit the place, or does it live a better, brighter life in Ms. Brown's telling than in reality? Probably, so I think I'll look for more of her work instead, and leave Medina to my imagination.

A lovingly written mystery that was orginally one of a set of three, this book is for those who enjoy looking back at at different time when romance and mystery were more pure. This is one of those books that will make you smile as you read it. If you're looking for a graphic novel, this is NOT your cup of tea.

In September 1999 when I became a staff member of Miami University, I was given several books to read regarding Miami's history. Although I'm not a sports fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the Cradle of Coaches. The story of how the "famous" coaches came to be and why Miami was called the "cradle" is a fascinating story. Remember Ara Parashegian...he was a Miami coach. If you love to know how coaches became "famous", read Cradle of Coaches! Go Redhawks!

I picked up a few of these books while I was looking for schools. They're really a good read.

A college review that is unbiased and tells it the way it is. The author is a Miami alumnus and is very proud of her alma mater although she does recognize the stereotype associated with Miami. The author accounts life at Miami quite accurately for the typical Miami student and is able to explain the lexicon that Miami students. Miami University is in Oxford, Ohio and the author does a great job with this book.

In "Mid-Century City: Cincinnati At The Apex", the historic photography of Sarge Marsh is nicely supported by the brief narrative text of John Fleishchman to present the city of Cinncinnati, Ohio in the mid-nineteenth century at the height of World War II when this American Midwest metropolis featured downtown movie palaces able to seat 1500 people at a time, when there was an airport served by shiny, propeller-driven DC-3 and DC-4 aircraft and people dressed formally to fly, when a typical business office worker was equipped with a wooden desk and a black telephone, when afternoon shoppers got their lunch in noisy, boisterous cafeterias. A superb showcase presenting a now time-lost yesteryear of Cincinnati, Ohio, "Mid-Century City" is a nostalgic series of images that is especially recommended for anyone who still remembers what it was like more than half a century ago.
