This book provides a strong background into the man that ran his life, company and a city by the "Golden Rule". In a time when big business ruled and exploited the American worker with slave wages and no protection, "Golden Rule" Jones reshaped and redefined our ideas of the workplace and in doing so challenged a whole generation of reformers. Marnie provides a very well documented book on "Golden Rule" Jones with a heavy emphasis on his personal and professional struggles throughout his life. It provides a great insight into Sam's pre-success years in OH and PA when he had "Oil on the Brain". A must read for any Human Resource or CEO's in learning how to treat their employees with respect, fair wages and good benefits. This book would also be a great asset for any students of religion, sociology, American studies, urban policies and, or history majors. This book will transform you, and you will be transformed by the ideas of S.M. Jone!

This is the sweetest book my son has ever read. It is totally geared toward children. My son loved recognizing the landmarks he has grown to love. A must read for all of Cleveland's children and anyone who ever thought about trying to explain relocation to their child.

Jennifer wrote of familiar experiences that brought you back to the simple things that taken collectively become spectacular and life changing.
I paricularly identified with the poem on page 61 about Buffalo where I went to Grad School and where I also felt love and loss of someone who eerily resembles her lost love.
She is a gifted poet who paints very vibrant images with words.
CMP will live forever in many hearts!!!

"How I became an American" is a terrific read for anyone (adults included!) who is interested in a fascinating time in our nation's history-- early 20th Century immigration to America from Europe-- and who wants a readable and compelling account of what things were like for the millions of immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island around 1900. The "Bonferts" family, a German-speaking family from Romania, risks everything for the hope of a new and productive life in America. For the most part, they find it, but in doing so they learn that everything good also comes at a cost.
I had never known a lot about this time period but learned, even though this is "historical fiction," a LOT about immigrant populations, working conditions for immigrants (and others) at that time, and about how people lived back then. The protagonist ("Johnny", 11 years old) tells of his experiences firsthand in a way that is fun to read and compelling for young readers. I think that this book is a VERY relevant one for young people today, especially as the issue of immigration is still a huge one in our country, and one we are sometimes having difficulty grappling with these days. The translation from the German is beautifully done (it won a national award for this).
This novel would also be a great choice for language arts/American History classes for elem/middle school (4th-6th grade).
And the book is a FUN too.

This is a great book but then again I'm prejudiced - I wrote it. I am currently working on a 2nd edition/printing with some updated and additional materials. More than 20,000 free copies have been distributed world-wide and over 100,000 people have read it on the net where it is available for free as either a download or read on-line.

This is a great book that gives a very brief history of Ohio and it's sights and symbols. It gives a page each of information on things like the state flower, bird, tree and flag and shows you how to draw them, step-by-step. The state seal, the Capitol, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Neil Armstrong Air and Space museum are also included. I used this in homeschooing activities for my 2nd grader and she learned a lot from it and had fun. The directions are easy to follow, and facts about each symbols are fun and easy to understand. Highly recommened!

Simon Girty has long been regarded by historians as a monsterous butcher and murderer. Captured by Indians with his brothers in Pennsylvania in 1756 during the French and Indian War, Simon was adopted by the Seneca tribe and learned the ways of the warrior. After being returned to the white world after the war, Girty became a scout at Fort Pitt, took part in the little known Lord Dunmore's War in 1774 with Simon Kenton, with whom he developed a great friendship, and eventually sided with the Americans during the early years of the Revolution. But in 1778, some say after witnessing one too many cruleties against the native tribes by the whites, Girty defected to the British and began a long and bloody career on the Ohio frontier, and gave birth to a black legend that would last until the present day. Girty personally inspired and led many war parties against the white settlments in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky, leading warriors into battle at Fort Henry, Blue Licks, Sandusky, St. Clair's Defeat, and Fallen Timbers. Today, he is best remembered for his part in the torture and murder of Col. William Crawford at the stake in 1782 following the Battle of the Sandusky near what is today Upper Sandusky, OH.
Simon Girty, as well as his brothers, are complex and mysterious characters that have only recently been given more sympathetic views by modern historians. While it is undeniable that Simon was a cold-blooded killer, his motivations and his loyalties to a people who were being driven from their homeland bares further research. Despite being remembered as a horrible blackguard in the 19th century, he is little-known today. He is, without a doubt, one of the most important forgotten characters of early American history.
