EMIGRACJA POLITYCZNA
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-15
There is no such thing as the Polish "immigration" to America. There were Polish immigrationS. The immigration which laid the groundwork for the Polish-American community as it exists today was the great emigration of 1880-1920, people who came for economic reasons. Polish poverty and American labor needs dovetailed. The immigration from 1945-52, the "DP" (Displaced Person) immigration, was a political immigration of people who refused to return to a "Poland" that was a mere Soviet satellite. These immigrants were often well-educated professionals who felt a moral obligation to preserve the free Polish intellectual tradition (after Hitler and Stalin did their best to exterminate it). Invoking the models of a "exile mission" found in the writings of Mickiewicz and other post-1830 Uprising emigres, the "DPs" eventually came to America, added fresh blood to the Polish Diaspora in America, and kept alive faith in Poland's eventual resurrection as a truly free and democratic state. Fills an important gap. Highly recommended.

Bill Taber was the best teacher I ever had. He was a recorded minister in Ohio Yearly Meeting; and was a quiet, meek person who genuinely cared about the spirituality of others. The sources for his information run along the line of yearly, quarterly and monthly Meeting Minutes; letters, epistles, biographies, autobiographies, unpublished manuscripts and both published and personal journals. OYM is set off by Baltimore YM in 1813, which sets off Indiana YM in 1821, followed by the Hicksite/Gurnyite split in 1828; then the Gurnyite[Evangelical]/Wilburite[Conservative] split in 1854. He enlightens what theological and personal disagreements created the splits, and shows how they played out. In the back cover is a map of all the monthly meetings and preparative meetings in the tri-state area (OH, WV and PA) from Salem School in 1826. There are quite a few in western PA, where there are no longer today any meetings south of Pittsburgh that I am aware of. It is a great resource for trying to understand who the different branches of Friends are, and how they became different. It would also be a good aid when doing Quaker geneology of that period because it explains the reasons for the movement of people. I have referred to it myself on numerous occaisions. The sister book he wrote is "Be Gentle, Be Plain," a history of Olney Friends School in Barnesville, Ohio.

Best source on Throckmortons along the Ohio

Many Throckmortons from New Jersey and Virginia lines traveled along the Ohio River looking for fertile farming land. Those that stayed and settled in southern Ohio counties are well documented in this book. Also prominently mentioned are the Crabtrees, multiple individuals who intermarried with the Throckmortons. Well recommended. Caroline Throckmorton Lewin

The Only Extant Biography of Alexander Winton

Sadly, Amazon didn't post the full title of this book, so anybody who does a search for Alexander Winton won't easily find this book. The full title is: "Famous but Forgotten: The Story of Alexander Winton, Automotive Pioneer and Insustrialist."

In short, this is a biography of one of America's first automakers, Alexander Winton. Winton built his first car in 1896 after reading about the Duryea brothers win in the Chicago race of 1895. In 1897 Winton took his car on an 800 mile endurance run from Cleveland to New York to prove its durability to the public. The run was so successful that the Winton Motor Carriage Company became the leading U.S. maker of automobiles during the late 1890s (It was overtaken by the Electric Vehicle Company in 1899).

The Winton Motor Carriage Company continued making automobiles until the early 1920s. At that point the company was absorbed into the General Motors monolith, and the Winton name died. The company still exists as a division of General Motors, but today it produces only marine diesel engines.

This is a good biography of a man who deserves to be recognized alongside other early industry leaders like Henry Ford, Ransom E. Olds, and Henry Leland.

"A Farm In The Firelands Of Ohio: Memories Of The Post-Civil War Period" is a fascinating and informative of what it was like to grow up on a family farm in Lyme Township, Huron county, Ohio. Dayton A. Williams was born in 1874, graduated in 1899 from Kenyon college (where he captained the last football team to beat Ohio State) and then some fifty years after he left the family farm, wrote a series of letters which included essays on Decoration Day at the country church and on Christmas celebrations at the church in town. Here are personal memories of peddlers, tramps, boyhood inventions for easing farm work, descriptions of the farm machinery of yesteryear mid-America, and even a quiz for readers to test themselves on their knowledge of the 'farmer business'. Deftly edited by Dayton Williams grandniece Anne Southworth McFarland (who began her own correspondence with Dayton when she was child on the farm with a pony and grew up to become a law librarian and author), "A Farm In The Firelands Of Ohio" is a superbly presented and engaging memoir that is as entertaining as it is thoughtful in presenting life on a typical Ohio farm in the latter part of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. As original source material, "A Farm In The Firelands Of Ohio" will prove to be of especial interest to both scholarship and non-special general readers with an interest in American History.

Okay, so I haven't read the book but I've seen the pictures in it at least. Even if you have no interest in Renaissance Erotica you should buy this book just because it's written by one of *the* coolest professors at Ohio State. What better reason do you need?

I read the entire collection of articles as I wrote my dissertation in the early 1990s. Obviously more recent research is now out, but this is still a great collection of essays on British women novelists.
