My mother gave me this book back in the 80's and now it's so well used that it's falling apart. It's a great book for Coloradans. I live at 6500 feet and the recipes work great. Now I'm buying a replacement book and another for my son, who is in culinary school and also loves the recipes. In fact, I use it twice as much as another cookbook I have. You can't lose with this one.

A Literary Masterpiece!!

While reading these stories I'm reminded of the former slave and loyal retainer to Samuel L. Clemens (Ms. Mary Ann Cord) whose "True Story..." of her enslavement launched Mark Twain into national prominence and brought the Northeastern literary establishment to its knees for its beauty and pathos. This collection, written by the son of former slaves is equally as moving and belongs to a great American 19th c. literary tradition that includes (though is not limited to) Joel Chandler Harris, George Washington Cable, Grace King, Kate Chopin and Charles W. Chesnutt.

Kudos to the editors!!

Worthwhile contribution to Civil War and New York City history!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-07
This is a very interesting primary source for people curious about the role New York City played in the Civil War. With interest in the rich military history of Governors Island on the rise, the fact that Edward Drummond was imprisoned in Castle Williams should hopefully draw readers to this book. The book is a testimony to the fact that POWs were treated in a reasonably humane manner early in the war when exchanges were still possible. The editor examines some of the theories about the crass attitude of the higher-ups which led to the development of what eventually amounted to death camps like Andersonville. The book also captures the brother vs. brother nature of the Civil War that accounts for much of the sentimental attachment to its study. The editor, curator of the Military History Institute at Carlisle, PA, knows how to tie primary sources together. This book is an example of why it's so important to preserve journals and correspondence that have historical value. It's to the credit of southerners that they have a tradition of this kind of preservation.

An Important Piece of Railroad History
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-31
Conquering the Appalachians is an important piece of American railroad history. This book documents railway construction in the Appalachian Mountains in the early years of the twentieth century. The construction of tunnels and trestles is described in detail and enhanced by crystal clear black and white photos from the collection of William Cary Hattan, the civil engineer who actually built large portions of the Clinchfield and Western Maryland Railways. Well written and researched by Hattan's daughter, Mary Hattan Bogart, this book would be an important addition to any library of railroad books. It belongs in the reference departments of every public library within the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Future generations need access to what Hattan and his men accomplished in those states with dynamite, carts, mules, pick axes, shovels and sheer muscle. Many of their trestles and tunnels still exist, unused for their original purpose, but monuments to determination and grit. I've seen two of the trestles, one in Pennington Gap, Virginia and another nearby. They are awe inspiring for anyone who has read this book.

A Well Informed Appraisal of Authoritarian Conservatism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-12
This book is a historical curiosity. It is a monography written by an American academic about Laureano Gomez, a political leader who has been dead for thirty-five years, and who is forgotten by most people in his country (Colombia). For those few that remember him, he is the Anti-Christ, the man who brought the violence to Colombia. The book is a fair appraisal of Gomez's career and thought. Perhaps only a foreigner can write fairly about the "Tempest Man", leader of the Conservative party for thirty years and President for only a year and a half.

Laureano Gomez was born in the middle class and rapidly distinguished himself by his extreme militancy in politics and religion (although he was supposed to be an integrist Catholic he frequently clashed with bishops and priests). He became an engineer (rather than a lawyer and a grammarian, which was the usual path to power in Colombia between 1900 and 1930) and a journalist. His bid for notoriety came through in 1921 when, in alliance with a rising star of the Liberal party (and future President and constitutional reformer), Alfonso Lopez-Pumarejo, he brought about the resignation of President Marco Fidel Suarez on trumped-up charges of corruption. In 1930 he became Party Leader and a very effective oppositionist. His brand of opposition was extreme, and his verbal intemperancy was frequently blamed for excess by his followers and opponents. He was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer, but that was very far from the case. Laureano was a corporatist rather like the now forgotten Dollfuss, the Austrian Chancellor killed by Hitler's followers in 1934. He was an authoritarian catholic, not a fascist. In 1946 Laureano Gomez led his party to power, and in 1950 he became President in an uncontested election. By that time violence had spiraled out of control, and in 1953 he was overthrown by Lieutenant General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, who was supported by a rival faction of the Conservative Party. He emigrated to Spain, where in 1956 he allied himself with Liberal leader Alberto Lleras to overthrow Rojas and re-establish civilian rule. With Lleras, Laureano Gomez was the father of the "National Front", a power sharing agreement that brought peace back to the country (although it was also blamed for the political immobilism that fueled armed leftist insurgency up to this day). Laureano's son, Alvaro, inherited his mantle as a leader of the Conservative Party until 1990, when he retired to become a University lecturer. In 1995 he was killed, another victim in the general lawlessness and violence that his father had fostered to some extent. Alvaro Gomez never became President because in the popular mind he was often associated with his father who, rightly or wrongly, had been blamed for violence in Colombia.

A complex, flawed, interesting figure, this is a worthy review of Laureano Gomez's life and thought.

A well written monograph, an enjoyable read

Review Date: 2006-01-08
Wolcott's thoughtfully written monograph combines a careful examination of urban juvenile justice systems in the United States with fascinating descriptions of real children brought into these systems. The author explores methods of policing adolescents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and how these methods changed throughout the decades in response to differing philosophies of child reformation and crime prevention. Wolcott also examines race relations, gender inequities, and the origins of youth gangs. The issues presented unearth the roots of modern debates about "getting tough on crime". All told, an enjoyable academic work, suitable both for the classroom and for serious general readers.

I found this little gem quite by accident at one of those remainders book sales and on a whim I turned to a page. And then I turned to another and then another...I was at a loss for words, what had I found? Something wonderful. The haunting imagery and her ability to sculpt tone and feeling will resonate with you for a long time. Seek this out and find it. You will not be disappointed. This little book is bigger than it looks.
