I have made several goodies out of here, their desserts are fabulous, and the salads are great. I always get complements on the food, and I purchased this book for a friend. A definite for the CookBook Shelf..

I loved the details in this book. There is a sequal out, newly released for other local areas. I think even if you aren't from the area, the stories of the dead that are listed in here are excellent. The details of how to find neat info on grave stones are fascinating. This is a great title and I am looking forward to reading the next one.

The Elixir Of Life Manuscripts include Septimius Felton; or The Elixir Of Life, The Dolliver Romance, Dr. Grimshawe's Secret, and The Ancestral Footstep. The first three very directly characterize an archetype for scientists that show up throughout other works by Hawthorne. The theme of the Ancestral Footstep, which is also interwoven as a plot in the other three works, surrounds a family secret which either leads the scientist figure to the discovery of the Elixir of Life, or entitles him to an inheritance. It is significant that none of these works were ever completed -- however, all are complete and distinct stories. Hawthorne usually planned out a plot so well that he did not need more than one draft to complete a romance. He clearly struggled with the themes of these works, since he never satisfied himself with either of his four drafts. I highly recommend these works as reading material for those who enjoy Hawthorne, or those who are interested in the study of the scientist or seeker in Hawthorne's works.

He refused a life full of honors and millonaire offers to come back to his Country, Argentina to fight for the health of his people.

He did it and died for it.

It is a book that deserves to be read.

The poems within the cover of this book, are like dandelion wine on a chilly winter's day. Warm, sunny and full of fond memories.

This is the definitive work on that time period. I've done some research in the area and taught courses on it and Rocke's book taught me more than I've ever learned. It seems he's read not just every published work from the period, but also the private correspondence of the principals. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear he interviewed them or even read their minds. Maybe he held a séance or something. Seriously, if you want to know 19th-century chemistry, buy this.

For anyone interested in steam locomotives of any nationality this is one to
buy for their library. A beautifully laid out book with hundreds of photo's it gives the history and running abilities of these huge engines. The engineering background and building is well covered including line drawings,
"Mechanical Diagrams" of all the engines covered in this book. It is easy to
read which makes it hard to put down. Well worth the money.

When you think of the C&O you tend to think of three things: long coal trains being pulled by those massive Allegheny 2-6-6-6 steam engines, the effort they put into their high class passenger service, and of course the sleeping kitty 'Chessie.' And in this book, each of these gets a full chapter.

As the book is composed almost entirely of pictures, here are images of a rail system that now is long gone. Even the C&O itself dissappeared into the massive CSX system almost twenty years ago. That was just after the author started researching the C&O. And in this book he is sharing his collection of C&O materials with the rest of us. Here are pictures of a wide range of C&O steam power, unfortunately most of which now exist only in the form of pictures with the original engines shipped to the scrap yard. Here is a picture of the experimental coal-burning, steam-turbine-electric locomotive that they tried (coal was cheap, diesel was not).

All in all, this book is a great tribute to the C&O during its glory years.

This is a wonderful historical romance about a young woman who runs a canal barge up the Potomac. She meets a young man who teaches her all she needs to know to successfully reach her destination. I was truly touched by this story.
