A Life Altering Book

I read this book as part of an assignment in American History in College. Mr. Zimmerman provides a concise, accurate, and painful history of U.S. dealings with Native Americans from European arrival on this continent until the Wounded Knee takeover in 1973. Not only did this book challenge me into political activism and participation in all civil rights movements, it changed forever my willingness to take the U.S. Government at it's word.

This book is a must read for anyone trying to understand the Civil Rights Movement, the Government's attempt to quelch such movements, and the real execution of due process in the United States.

The struggle to write
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-14
This, the second book in the Alberta trilogy, breaks with the past in more ways than one. While the first book concerned itself with the struggles of an adolescent girl growing up in a cold and alienating small town in Northern Norway, the first book examines Alberta's life seven years later. She is now a woman living on the fringe of the expatriate artist community in Paris, and she struggles to maintain her autonomy, develop her voice as a writer, and stave off crushing loneliness and poverty. Sandel is a master of Norwegian prose fiction, and although Alberta's situation is often desperate, the writing is always exquisite.

northern light

This is the quiet, intense story of an adolescent girl who struggles to gain autonomy in an oppressive family and narrow-minded town north of the arctic circle in Norway. The story (originally published in 1926) is set in the narrow confines of the bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century, and the desperation of the main character, Alberte, is palpable. Cora Sandel (pseudonym for Sara Fabricius, 1880-1974) is considered to be one of the greatest Scandinavian novelists of the twentieth century, but is virtually unknown abroad. Despite the seriousness of the novel, it manages to delight most readers because of the brilliance of Sandel's prose. A must read for folks who love twentieth century women writers.

Valerie Strong is a woman who has seemingly led an enviable life. Her love of plants and nature in general is so evident and well-stated. She has an eye not only for plants, but design, architecture, stonework, and so on. Her love of gardening has allowed her to meet and make friends with interesting poeple who get so much satisfaction in sharing their ideas (and sweat and muscle power) to complete a job that will perhaps allow others to nurture their appreciation for gardening. As I prepare to revamp my Ohio yard this Spring, I will make good use of the practical ideas as well as the gardening philosophy that Valerie espouses in this lovely book.

Photographs To Exercise The Mind

Review Date: 2004-01-11
Professor Borowiec's photographs are like little delicious desserts for the brain. Each one is to be savored and almost every one of them gave my imagination a complete workout. The photographs of houses and streets made my mind say "Who lives here?", "What is around the corner?", "What would it be like to live here?" "What would I experience looking out of the window of the house on the hill?". I wanted to jump into the photographs to experience the whole body mood and feeling of them. Anyone who likes to study a photograph thoroughly to gain everything it has to offer will love this book. A wonderful experience. Thank you Professor Borowiec!
