After reading this book through, I gave it a permanent place on my bedside table. An inveterate "read before sleep" reader, I can pick it up, flip it open to any page and become once again enthralled as if it were new. It not only aids and encourages the visualization of the scene, it gently and effectively passes on a lot of memorable information. Sometime later I read "Outermost House" and both books share that bedside status. I have also given the same set as a gift to a number of friends.

William Sargent's book gave me a better understanding of a marsh as an environment. After reading his book I had a better appreciation of the role of a marsh especially how it was valued by early settlers. While visting Ipswich I was delighted to meet Mr. Sargent and hear him speak. He has a strong background in marine biology and is a pleasure to have as a speaker. Overall his book helped me feel less like an 'outsider' while visiting the northeast coast of Massachusetts.

This is an excellent book. The contents are not strictly confined to the harbor but it does remain the focus that history of Rye surrounds. Excellent work, well researched.

Cannot find tab for AUTHOR REVIEW, so am writing review here.
A short hour north of Boston, but a lifetime away, lies Rye Harbor, New Hampshire, on Ocean Boulevard. The coastline approach from the south along Route 1A is stunningly threaded with imposing old mansions, dangerous curves, cliffs, and dazzling ocean. The area is a precious time capsule taking one back to "olden days." Just before the sharpest curve of all, at Ragged Neck, sits Rye Harbor. We as the AUTHORS consider the book a delight because it presents the history and adventure of the spot dating from the 1600s, detailing storms, shipwrecks, the 1874 Transatlantic cable coming ashore, lurking submarines of World War II, a coastal marsh nearly destroyed with dredging material magically brought back to life, Onassis's nearly convincing the area in the early 1970s to allow a massive offshore oil terminal, foreign fleets stealing fish and gear, and recent crushing federal fishing regulations. Intertwined with the history are 120 B/W photos with stories of fishermen battling the winter ice, a explosive fire at sea nearly killing a captain and his son, one Coast Guard captain's forging off-shore a sudden bond with his rebellious teenage daughter, a world-famous giant squid expert who spent his youth as a harbor lobsterman, and another boy leaving the spot to fight in the Vietnamese war and write poetry about Rye Harbor as he planned battles overseas. The book grows and rises with the wind and waves as it urges you to explore all harbors and find that special one to love forever.

Enhanced throughout with the memorable artwork of Robert Crawford, Denise Ortakales' The Legend Of The Old Man Of The Mountain recounts the legendary story of the Mohawk Indian Chief Pemigewasset and his love for the maiden Minerwa. The marriage of the chief and his wife brought peace for many years. But when Minerwa left to visit her dying father, Chief Pemigewasset had to stay behind. He waited steadfast, devoted to her, yet she did not return. When winter fell he continued to wait despite the bitter cold, and though his people feared for him, he would not go back on his word to Minerwa. At last the Great Spirit claimed the chief; his people buried him facing in the direction Minerwa had left, so that he could gaze upon her when she returned. Amazingly, the very profile of Pemigewasset became immortalized within the cliff, and his visage gazes out to this day. A powerful and moving tale of unyielding devotion, strikingly illustrated in cool tones.

Perley M. Leighton's work was cited by George F. Sanborn Jr., FASG, as "one of the best twentieth-century genealogies of a major northern New England family." I echo his sentiments. The 1989 books are out-of-print with reprints unlikely in the near future. LEIGHTON GENEALOGY ON CD includes the entire two volumes by Perley Leighton in original format with recent updates, electronically searchable and includes photos, documents, maps and more. Our family owns a vacation condo in the Lincoln/Woodstock area at the Deer Park Resort, which now stands on the grounds of the old Deer Park Hotel - and like most of the grand hotels of it's era - was sadly destroyed by fire many years ago. I understand the old hotel was quite the establishment in it's day, and I was so pleased to see it mentioned many times in this book. It kind of brought it back to life in a way for me, even in a fictional sense. If you are a regular visitor to the area like I am - I highly recommend this book - after reading it, you will gain a new appreciation for the area, and afterwards, when you ride through the town of Lincoln, you will notice things (buildings streets, etc,) you never noticed before ;) It's an interesting read!

This book about the town of Lincoln, N.H. had me, a transplant to Lincoln, feeling very proud to be a citizen of this town. As I read about people I've known or known of, I felt extra proud. I found myself fighting back tears many times as I read this novel while on vacation, relaxing among family.
As he described events that took place generations ago in places I've been in,on streets I've walked down, the author made the event actually happen to me. It was very powerful.

This is a compact but information-filled guide to the wildlife of New Hampshire. Introduced with facts about tools, techniques, photography hints and ethics, the book continues with chapters on each of three regions of the state -- White Mtns and Northern, Uplands, Southern plains and hills -- each beginning with a color map showing the 20-30 viewing sites listed, followed by color drawings of various species and a page for each site which lists a description of the locale, viewing information, directions to the site, ownership, size, closest town and recreation and facility information. With lots of colorful photographs and practical information, this invaluable book concludes with a species index. Terrific.

I was very please to read this carefully crafted book. Helen has an engaging way of informing and incorporating us in the farms she visits. The profiles of the farmers made for interesting reading and sparks the need to try some of the recipes. I recommend this book to people who love to cook and for those who WISH they could farm.

Basic plot: Woman (vet) fleeing an abusive husband, joins a rural veterinary clinic. She meets a blind man, his dog, and a community that saves her (in more ways than one.) This book has gone virtually unnoticed, but it is great! Take time to pick it up, read it and recommend it to your friends. You will laugh, cry, and walk away from the book touched and changed for the better. Not many books make me feel this way, so give it a try and if you don't like it, it is not the author's fault.

What we see may not be as important as what we can imagine, so curl up with your dog, and this book, and enjoy an eye-opening and enlightening story.

If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night to worry, this book will soothe your mind. Donald Hall writes beautifully about his life in New Hampshire in a house and a town he clearly loves. He will remind you of beauties in your own life -the sound of a snow plow clearing the roads at night, remembering your grandparents' house, gazing at a pond with mist rising from it. This may sound like the book is too sentimental - but actually it is just peaceful. The woodcut illustrations are also a pleasure.
