The answer to a mystery: what did the Church do and why?

Ever wondered why the Catholic Church behaves the way it does? This History is a well written, entertaining, enlightened answer by one of the Church's cognoscenti. Yes, it is a history of the Catholic Church in New Hampshire, but it is more than a history. It is an engaging detective story that reveals the answer to why the Church did that or this. Moreover,it outlines a text book case of how not to run a railroad, or a church for that matter. I like the work well enough to buy five or six copies for the benifit of my more thoughtful friends.

Publisher's Note for the 2002 edition by Clearfield Publishing:

This original Clearfield publication is a faithful transcription of the birth, marriage, and death records of the town of Kingston, New Hampshire. Commencing with the oldest extant records in 1694 and continuing up to the present, Mrs. Arseneault's new book refers to a staggering 25,000 persons who were born, married, or died in Kingston.
The book is divided into two parts: vital records from 1694 through 1900, which were abstracted from the original records, and vital records from 1901 through 1994, which are based on Kingston Town Reports for those years. Within each half of the book, births are followed by marriages, which are, in turn, followed by deaths. The births and marriages are arranged alphabetically according to the name of the father or husband, while the deaths are arranged alphabetically by the name of the deceased.
The following is typical of the kind of information that can be found in the Kingston volume. Birth records, which are arranged in family units, give the names of the parents, names and dates of birth of their children, and frequently the parents' places of birth or residence (other than Kingston) at the time of record. The marriage records furnish the full names of the bride and groom, their places of birth or residence, and the date of the marriage. The death records identify the deceased by name, date of death, and age at death or date of birth, and frequently include the names of the deceased's parent(s), and, in the case of later records, the place of death. While all male Kingstonians are readily found in one of the six alphabetical sub-sections in the book, Mrs. Arseneault's 12,000-name index to females makes it easy to locate mothers and daughters scattered in the text.
All in all, this is an extraordinary transcription and, without question, the starting point for Kingston, New Hampshire family history.

Excellent Photo History of Wakefield and Brookfield

Filled with delightful images of long ago New Hampshire, this photo history does an excellent job of entertaining and informing. The old photos are well-captioned and lead the reader through the development of the Wakefield-Brookfield villages including colonial experiences, the mills, early camps around the lakes, the importance of the railroad, and the ice industry. I was amazed that 25 railroad cars of ice left the area daily during the peak of the ice harvesting, before modern refrigeration.
What a treat to see long ago families in their old-fashioned clothing, old schoolhouses, and other scenes of bygone times. I loved it.

A Terrific Addition to New Hampshire's Seacoast History

If, like me, you're fascinated with grand hotels of the past, and especially with those that have managed to survive, you will enjoy Wentworth by the Sea, The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel. Dennis Robinson's book is much more than the history of a hotel; it is the story of New Castle, New Hampshire, from its settlement in the 1600's to modern time. The building, development, and ultimate salvation of the Wentworth has had much to do with this unique island village and its dynamic, fascinating people. The book is artistically done, with more than 250 pictures and drawings from all eras. Well written, it is filled with facts, legend, and lore told in an engaging manner that has its reader beginning at the front cover and following straight through to the end as if reading a novel. A terrific addition to New Hampshire's seacoast history!

This is the guide to get for White Mtns day hikes

This guide has a lot of info presented very concisely and clearly. Includes: camping info, hike descriptions, suggested snowshoe and ski routes, and close-up maps of many of the most popular hiking trails. Also includes a large fold-out map of entire White Mountains region on waterproof, unrippable stock. Lots of illustrations, and an attractive and useful design.
I found that this book is quite under-rated by local booksellers. This is an excellent book for a casual White Mtns hiker who wants an abridged guide to the more popular day trails, with concise and clear information about each (including trail times, estimated difficulty, and short description of each). This is the guidebook that I use most often for day hikes; and in a lot of cases I find this map more useful than the AMC map series. For example, the colors are much more clear, and numerous scenic points are marked, although water sources are not.

This is great story about a boy in the old days of stagecoach travel in the 1830's in New Hampshire. Daniel Drew an orphan boy ends up working at a Deptford Tavern called the Fox and Stars, and the reader is treated to rich descriptions of what life was like back then before the automobile. Trouble stirs and Dan is involved in a hunt for an evil troop of highwaymen. This book is deep in adventure and I find it amazing that it is out of print. It is one of the best children's books I have ever read.

This book has photos of around 350 wildflowers with a paragraph describing the pertinent details of each. They are arranged by color and are very easy to use. If you are looking for help separating extremely similar species, or want range maps, this is not the book for you, but for putting a name to the flower you just found it is excellent.

Early in the history of this country a few hardy souls set out to establish a town they could call their own. Windsor, CT was first surveyed and then platted to show ownership, and thereby a vested interest in making a "stopping place", their home. The maps included in Volume I give a detailed view of where one family lived in relation to another. Volume II goes into great detail--more than 900 pages, outlining the relationship of one family to another. This volume provides great genealogical information for the more than 200 families who lived, married, and raised families who have since spread throughout the United States. The descendants have since populated many parts of the country and can trace their ancestory back to "The History of Ancient Windsor Connecticut."
This makes a great source of information for those who have an ancestor named in these volumes.
