History with Grit and Grime

This book is actually circa 1983. The first half is basic pretty interesting history, the last half is best. Here you will find company profiles for about 50 industries, and you can start sheding tears right now, as more than a few of these classic old companies are now gone. My interest is in old machine tools, so I found entries for Kingsbury Machine and Whitney Screw products fascinating. Speaking of Whitney, they are the LAST mfg in USA still in business makeing machine cut screws and this includes those quality brass wood screws you once bought at your local hardware. I hope someone buys this book and does something to help keep these industries alive!!!

If you're traveling our northeastern border (or even want to), you need this book. Populations are sparse in this region but artisans abound. You won't want to miss the opportunity to find the best. Easy to use and quite well illustrated.

Its hard to imagine that our traditional, yet modern New England town once looked like the photographs in this wonderful book. From the covered bridge across the river, to the horse-and-buggy transportation, the photos capture the magic of Hanover over a period of more than 100 years. Anyone who loves Hanover will absolutely love this book.

I was a supporter of Gary Hart in 1984. Susan Berry Casey was an organizer of his successful New Hampshire primary that year. When this book came out in 1986 I read it for that reason. I got far more than what I expected. Not only was it an incredibly detailed and exciting account of the primary, it was a step by step guide to community organizing that could be applied to just about anything from political causes to church gatherings. I have since started or assisted in the founding of several community action groups. Much of the credit for my enthusiam and practical skills comes from this book. It is worth looking for and buying if you can find it.

This book is excellent for anyone who likes to hike in new hampshire, but likes to stick to the presidentials. It's informative, compact and an essentail edition to any hikers pack. It comes with a map of the range, too. Now is a great time to buy because the AMC maps have just been given a make-over. They are now full colorized and eaiser to read. A very cool feature with the map is that it has an iset of Mount Washington from the hermit lake shelter to the summit. All in all, a wonderful book.

Old History But The Best Available
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-22
There were two editions of Willis. The reprinted one is basically pre-Civil War. It is voluminous and Willis is obviously collecting virtually every fact available to him.

He is an extremely reliable, accurate scholar with a smooth presentation style. Quite remarkable for old histories, especially with the heavy factual orientation. Yet the heavy genealogical emphasis is not burdensome, and is relieved by his objectivity and lack of "social commentary."

The only comparable comprehensive history is Goold's, written 20 or so years later. Goold is not a professional historian, but a journalist, and strongly relies on Willis' groundbreaking research. He's a good read too.

There are several other histories and pseudo-histories, mostly journalistic or highly opinionated. The monographic material leads much to be desired, even the newer research. Again we must go to the classical writers for better material. Renaissance man Baxter, of course, is the very best for fact, objectivity and style. His writing is mostly about the early colonial period, and is studies of Leavitt and Cleaves, and contributions to the ME HIstorical Society series are phenomenal. Another valuable resource are the Smith & Deane diaries, which were edited and culled -- again, around 150 years ago. And the originals disappeared. Various Nineteenth Century travel guides (Elwell, Neal, etc.) also have valuable historical vignettes, as do miscellaneous histories of county, businesses, ethnic groups, and professions. There is abundant material for the post-Civil War period, but it is never presented adequately as objective, comprehensive history.

Simply a superb collection of correspondence
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-06
This book is comprised of 373 letters [243 by Holmes; 130 by Frankfurter] exchanged between 1912 and 1934. This is an extremely significant period in the lives of the two correspondents, and the letters are highly interesting. The editors have written an invaluable introduction of some 22 pages discussing the letters, their authors, the many efforts to develop a OWH biography, and the migration of Holmes' papers after his death. The letters themselves cover a variety of topics: the judicial role; socialism; the philosophy of judging; legal history; and of course discussion of some very important cases. A number of individuals are mentioned; these comments are among the most revealing insights into the authors. Among others, OWH and FF tackle Charles Beard, Laski, Brandeis, Learned Hand, Pollock, Wigmore, Keynes, John Zane, Hohfeld, W.W. Buckland, Cardozo, Roscoe Pound, Lord Bryce, and various Supreme Court Justices. Holmes' talent for the pithy expression is well in evidence. For example, he refers to the Clayton Act as "legislative humbug. And of course, Holmes being Holmes, there is discussion of many important books and ideas he was encountering. Interestingly, the editors also believe it likely [as do Urofsky and Levy in their edited collection of Brandeis/FF letters also reviewed on Amazon] that FF destroyed a number of his letters to Holmes after the Justice's death. OWH himself had suggested that FF destroy Holmes' letters during the correspondence. Fortunately, for all of us, this is one instruction FF did not (at least) fully execute. As always, Holmes demonstrates flair, humor, insight, and great knowledge in his letters--he is one of our finest contributors of important letters. This 278 page book has a helpful bibliography, and has been nicely printed by University Press of New England. A book of lasting importance beyond question.

A powerfully taut and moving book

What a moving and soulful book; I couldn't put it down. Through her edgy, finely drawn characters, Farish spins a powerfully taut thread across the decades of heartbreak and forgiveness that continue to be the legacy of the war in Vietnam. Her voice is as true and bright and clear as sunlight touching frost early on a winter morning in the New Hampshire mountains where the tale unfolds.
