I bought this book in the hardcover edition in 1988. It has been, by far, the best self-help book I've purchased! The book is written in short chapters, each addressing a particular problem. The advice is sound, rational, helpful and hopeful.

I send this book to every woman I know to help her face difficult times...and who hasn't? Jennier James writes clear and identifiable descriptions of the life crises that give us the blues, and then provides survival strategies to live through the crises.

I received this book from a friend about 15 years ago when I was having life changing issues. I was not the self-help type and was very skeptical. What I found was that you do not have to read this from cover to cover and you are cured. You get to pick what ails you and get sound advice with some humor attached. This is the one and only self help book that I recommend to friends that are hurting.

A Must Have for ALL WOMEN!

Sound advice that passes the test of time. Easy to read and thought provoking as well as comforting and inspiring.

A great book for experienced nurses or folks like me, who are just starting in the profession. Annette Vallano's book answered questions about nursing I wouldn't have even known to ask. I'm changing careers after twenty-five years as a teacher, and this workbook/resource book contained the best career advice I could have received. It gives a realistic, honest, nuts and bolts picture of what nursing is like today, both the good and the bad. I have a head start in how to be assertive and pro-active in finding and creating the nursing position that will suit my skills, interests and life-style. I also understand some of the work related pitfalls can happen and how to avoid them. Finally, the book has a heart and soul that gives meaning and importance to the unique abilities we each have to offer in our work as a nurse.

Montana offers a wealth of outdoor fun for the active traveler, from skiing and snowmobiling to fly fishing and horseback riding. With stunning scenery and colorful history, the state is one of the most appealing in the US. And the best part: it's rarely crowded!

Join Rowles as she explores big cities and small towns alike, as well as the small wilderness areas and sprawling preserves. Guest ranches are the preferred accommodation here, but the author gives you plenty of other options. And if you're not ready for a ride in the saddle, perhaps some classes are in order - you'll find all the details you need in this hefty, information-packed guidebook.

Oneness Commentary on a Classsic

Gospel of One, Letters of Aul

This book is easy to read and is deceptively simple. It is a commentary on Sun Tzu's classic work "The Art of War," which in itself is a simple book with profound implications. It has been used by thousands of people to gain an advantage or a victory over enemies and opponents in the context of wars, business deals, sports, and personal relationships. The problem with it is that the advice only tells you how to gain a finite victory.

The "Art of Non-War," on the other hand, tells us how to rise above dualistic thinking that leads us to believe we can gain any kind of lasting benefit by defeating other people, who are actually part of the Infinite, just as we are. The practitioners of non-war do not see people, or institutions, or belief systems as the enemy. Their aim is to help people see that we are all part of the Infinite Oneness.

The book comments on all the strategies and angles that Sun Tzu brings up, but each strategem is brilliantly countered by the perspective of living in oneness with the Infinite, which has no enemies.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to strengthen their resolve to live with an attitude of true peace and love for everyone. The pitfalls of dualistic thinking are easy to fall into because most of the world still thinks in terms of gaining advantage or victory over perceived enemies--in war, business, sports and personal relationships. How many of us want to be "one up" on someone else? --
Cliff Mikkelson "The Oneness Guy"

From start to finish this book was a pleasure to read.

If you have had enough of war on this planet, and you're wondering what you can do, or if it is even possible to eliminate war, then this book is a must read. Einstein once famously said "The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." And therein lies the key.

War truly cannot be overcome while we still look at the world through the same pair of goggles through which we've been looking at it until now. We can try to create artificial bridges, artificial truces, artificial peace. But that peace will never last as long as we still hold on to a world view where there are divisions between people, between races, between religions, between nations and ultimately even divisions in ourselves.

So the key to achieving a lasting peace on this beautiful planet of ours is not just by trying to create political talks and truces and agreements, but in dealing with the issue from a higher level, by changing the way we look at the world, at other people and ourselves.

And in that respect this book is a fantastic guide that will open your eyes to different ways of looking at the world, so that you can start to clean out the goggles that have been muddied with dirt, until you are finally ready to take the goggles off altogether and see things clearly.

Lasting peace truly is achievable, and it is achievable in only one way and that is to remove the beam from our eyes, which is the consciousness of war and division.

War has finally met its match

War has finally met its match. Yet, when you read this book you
understand that even this is an illusion as ultimately nothing
can be opposed the to the matchless forces of peace.

This should be the handbook for all who are committed to
overcoming war on this planet. Yet, the teachings in this book
are beyond the anti-war movement - as inherent in that idea is a
struggle against war by those who are opposed to it.

This is the definitive proactive guide to producing peace in
yourself and peace on the planet. Not by fighting against war
but by uniting with the forces of peace within and without. It
provides incomparable insight to how we can actually love our
neighbors as our self and turn the other cheek in all
situations.

Never has such profound wisdom been presented with such clarity
and simplicity. This book is written for all walks of life.

The only prerequisites for this book are a very simple: an open mind
and an willingness to look outside of the boxes that have kept
mankind in the grips of war for thousands of years.

If you are tired of war on this planet and are yearning for
peace then this is your book. For the more we internalize its
message, the closer we will be to actually realizing what many
would call the impossilbe dream: peace on earth and good will to
all.

This book appears to be identical to the one that Prevention is bringing out on September 19, 2006. This 2004 edition is by Sari Harrar and Editors of Prevention, and the 2006 edition is by Ann Fannante (sp?) and the Editors of Prevention. The 2006 edition does not say 'revised' or 'updated' or anything like that. Furthermore, in the current edition of Prevention magazine, they have an article that mentions their "new" book with details from its program, but the article is by Sari Harrar!
Huh???
Sometimes I have "issues" with Prevention - but in general think they are a positive force in health-themed publications.
The earlier book by Sari Harrar, et al., is a good resource for a good health regimen.

Essential Book! for anyone Addicted to Sugar!!

I found this book to be a lifesaver. I was so addicted to sugar, and had become hypoglycemic, to the point where I was having seizures, if I didn't eat candy or sugar, the moment I started shaking and sweating profusely. I was hungry all the time, gaining weight daily it seemed like, tired all the time, and unable to concentrate. After reading this book, and following the steps for getting off the sugar and replacing it with healthy foods, that didn't let my sugar go up and down. I had no more seizures, lost weight like crazy, I have tons of energy now, and I no longer Crave Sugar 24 hrs a day, nor am I hungry all day long. I feel like I have a life again. Not to mention my risk aren't as high for being coming diabetic, which is what my Doctor told me I surely would have before. Not that I don't have a chance of still becoming one, but before it was a SURE THING.
I definetly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with sugar addiction, like I did. You will feel REBORN!

I can not say enough about the Baynes Clan series of books. I bought this book to see if I would like the story. When I finished with it, I ordered the other five without hesitation. McCord is equal in every way to Louis L'Lamour in his writing abilities. I just wonder why anyone has not made a movie of the Baynes Clan yet. It is the best family western series since the Sacketts and I do not exagerate at all. After reading the Baynes Clan and Walking Hawk, another excellent book by McCord, I am a devoted fan of his writing style. I am eagerly awaiting his next western book!!! ~Bev. Bozman~

Wow, it is 2001, 15 years after my Mom left this world and here I sit with technology that did not exist when she was living. I thought for kicks that I would look up her name and her last book popped up. She finished it the day before she died! She was one of the most extraordinary humans I have ever met. I hope her words continue to help those in need - they helped me!

Encompassing a half century of outdoor exploits in Montana, Dan Aadland's new book captures the essence of the hunter's bond with the outdoors and companions who revel in the experiences. The lively, frequently humorous recollections allow one to become immersed in the anticipation, exhilaration, and despair derived through our pursuit instinct. For me, the book provides a satisfying and enduring reconnect with what is surely the best of all seasons!

Though I am not a hunter, I enjoyed this book a great deal. As in SKETCHES FROM THE RANCH, Aadland brings to life a place and its people, and you want to be there, with them. The author describes the rifles he owned with the same affection and sensitivity he brings to his descriptions of nature. You feel his boyhood excitement, identify with the adventures--and misadventures--of family life, and appreciate his extensive knowledge and love of his natural surroundings. Aadland's life as a hunter, from his boyhood initiation to new discoveries with his grown boys, exemplifies what he calls the "hunters paradox" -- the meeting of the willingness to kill with a deep reverence for life. Whether you are more entertained by the hunt or by the Montana love story, this book will satisfy.

I read it ten or twelve years ago, never forgot it. In recommending it to a good friend whose cutting horses are using horses on his own ranch, I began to remember, and relish, the poetic language and rhythm of this remarkable book. So, I'll dig it out and read it for perhaps the 5th time. McGuane, Didion, McCarthy and Ralph Beer. Hall of famers in my opinion. And, tonight, when I feed and fly-spray my own horses, I will see them, my dogs and the land in a little different light. A bit more appreciative.

Freedom's just another word. . .
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-02
I had no expectations when I picked up this novel, except that I'd read a nonfiction piece by the author, a Montana writer, enjoyed his point of view, and marveled at his gift of language. As a novelist, he offers up a story and characters that are vivid and real, and the language that describes their world is close to poetry. There's a wonderful precision in the detail and the word choice that makes you just slow down and relish each sentence as it evokes the experience of being alive under this big sky through the roll of the seasons.

The story is told through the perspective of a young man returning home to his father and grandfather, outside Helena, Montana. He's had some hard luck, an accident on a firing range that has put him in a military hospital, and before that a rodeo career that has gone nowhere. The stopover is meant to be temporary, but like wild horses drawn unwittingly into the blind corral of the title, he is unable to leave, spending a bitter winter with his dying grandfather, an aging rancher, instead of returning to Canada as planned and a woman he has taken up with.

There is an aching melancholy throughout the novel that fills the scenes with a sense of loss. The ranchland, which no longer supports the cattle business, is being bought up by developers. The generation that grew up there and made a living from it, through good years and bad, is now passing on. They have little to leave their descendants but the land itself, worth little more than what it can be sold for. And there is irony in how losing the land mirrors the same loss by the Indians who preceded them a century earlier.

But it's also a personal story, of the young hero's return from adventures that have left him empty and without direction. His fate is played out in a man's world where women, if they figure at all, are as tough and independent as the men. The toughness is both a strength that protects them and a tragic flaw that leads them into lives of emotional isolation. When an old man dies, the best that can be said of him is that "he was hard on horses; he never forgot a grudge; he either liked you or he didn't."

On the downbeat side, yes, but there is also a quiet beauty in this novel. The land, though scarred and abused, still consoles the soul. And the reader is left on the cusp of both sorrow and admiration for these characters who can tough it out, each a surviving fragment of the old West, clinging to a kind of dignity in a new West that is tawdry and shallow by comparison.

Author Susan Wells artfully weaves together inspiring stories from three points of view: social change-makers, her role as a mentor, and, for the reader, the power of open space to restore us. Her book is a counterpoint to today's obsession with benchmarks and metrics (in nonprofit and for-profit settings) rather than the people who create change.

While I'm not in the non-profit world, I found this book to be incredibly inspiring. This book is about community, supporting the people on the front lines, retreat and the difference one or two people can make.
The writing is poetic - so much so that I felt transported. I wish I knew of a way to get this book into a wider variety of bookstore subject areas as many more people would benefit from this than just folks in the non-profit world.

Important lessons for each and every one of us

What a lovely story - full of simple truths that any one of us can benefit from. It's a pretty fast read (less than 200 pgs), full of heartfelt, revealing portraits of real people and their experiences of renewal. The author and the people profiled provide us with a solution to the always-present problem of burnout - specifically for those who work in the fields of social and environmental justice. I think the story is applicable for anyone who may have 'lost themselves' in their work and now suffers from the various symptoms that so easily creep in.

It's a beautifully written, personal reflection by one of the co-founders of an inventive program they call Windcall. I readily recommend this book to anyone who has a spouse, friend, sibling or coworker that could use an optimistic reminder that we are not simply our work. And that the vital life force and creativity that often gets snatched away if one's identity becomes too locked and identified only with work-related responsibilities can indeed be restored and renewed.
