Research historian Jerome A. Greene presents Fort Randall on the Missouri, 1856-1892, an in-depth study of the military post of Fort Randall: its establishment, the day-to-day life of its troops and their support of military expeditions against American Indians, routine patrols of Dakota and Nebraska territory, exploration and mapping missions among the Black Hills, and more. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations, including all twenty-four of the original stereopticon photographs of Sitting Bull's incarceration at Fort Randall, illustrate this heavily researched and meticulously accurate chronicle. A welcome addition to American and Missouri state history shelves.

Written by former Truman State University director of the graduate program in music David C. Nichols, Founding the Future: A History of Truman State University is an eye-opening chronicle of the proud history of Truman State from its visionary founding over a hundred years ago to modern changes and transformations, such as the introduction of value-added assessment and student reactions. Founding the Future also looks beyond Truman State's rich history toward its future legacy, from study abroad to the development of liberal education outside the classroom. Black-and-white photographs, notes, and appendices round out this glowing tribute to the evolution of an American font of higher learning.

Getting Serious

Review Date: 2000-07-03
I have been an admirer of Gordon Weaver's short stories since I read "Getting Serious" (winner of the Best American Short Story in 1980 and included in this collection) twenty years ago. I won't say that it is the "best" short story I ever read - but I will say that it is one of the few that I have come back to again and again because of the way it speaks to me about life, loss and memory - the way each of us "fictionalizes" our past to make sense of it and how the dreams and aspirations of our youth collide with the realities of middle age. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Weaver in 1992 in Stillwater, OK before he retired from his english professorship and tell him how important his work had been. Highly recommended.

A uniquely insightful and powerful historical narrative
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-19
Deftly edited for modern publication by William L. Andrews (E. Maynard Adams Professor of English, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill), From Fugitive Slave To Free Man is a compilation of the two autobiographical works "Narrative of William W. Brown, A Fugitive Slave, Written by Himself" and "My Southern Home" by William Wells Brown, who born in 1814 to a slave mother and a white father. Brown's varied life, and his perspective of slavery from all sides, make for a uniquely insightful and powerful historical narrative that has weathered the test of time. A welcome and valued contribution to American History, From Fugitive Slave To Free Man is a welcome addition to any academic or community library Black Studies collection.

A Smashing Good Read!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-20
I am completely biased - this book is by my dad - but I still think it is a jolly good read! Although it chronicles some of our life in the UK and USA, the author does a great job of explaining the many differences between the two countries. Even I learned a lot from it, and my mom and I were the ones who told dad to write it because we were exhausted by his story telling! This is truly a labor of love, and I'm very proud of both my dad's extraordinary life and the tenacity he showed during the writing and promotion of his book. Buy it now! (Kudos to mom for the fabulous cover illustration.)

I use this book at least weekly to find interesting things for our family to do that fit our budget. I especially appreciate the tips the authors give as only one who has actually been there can. The authors are unbiased in their reviews (unlike tourist brochures) and also point you to good lodging and eats along the way. I'll never have to dig through the yellow pages again - all the numbers I need are right there. Also, times and prices. A great book. I also recommend the others in the series.

Butts has provided that rare delight, a book of major scholarship which may be read with pleasure by the thoughtful general public. Though her subject seems specialized, her research and thoughtful analyses throw light on subsequent American history. Butts writes with the thoroughness of a scholar but with the skill of a novelist!

A must-read for diehard Cardinal fans

I have a very large collection of baseball books, and this is one of my favorites. Admittedly, I am a lifelong Cardinal fan, but I found it fascinating the way Matthew Leach got players to tell exactly what was going through their heads at very crucial times: Adam Wainwright on striking out Carlos Beltran with that astounding curveball, Scott Rolen on competing against (and beating) Roger Clemons with the odds absolutely in the Rocket's favor, Jason Isringhausen on putting the team first, etc. My only criticism is that I would have loved to have heard from Albert Pujols. You can't have everything. Leach did an outstanding job. Five stars!
