Written by Dr. Susan Elaine Gray (research associate to the Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Peoples in an Urban and Regional Context, University of Winnipeg), "I Will Fear No Evil": Ojibwa-Missionary Encounters Along the Berens River, 1875-1940 offers a new perspective of the history of Christian missions in Canada - one told from the point of view of the Berens River Ojibwa people of Canada, rather than that of the Methodist and Catholic missionaries dedicated to converting them. Exhaustively researched with keen attention to detail, "I Will Fear No Evil" depicts how the Ojibwa were active participants in missionary encounters, incorporating Christian beliefs and practices into their established belief system, a mixture that remains sincerely woven in the lives of Berens River residents today. A truly fascinating exploration of a the meeting and shaping of cultures.

Even if you are not from Michigan but are interested in learning about this state, I would heartily recommend this book. Gorgeous paintings on every page and a catchy rhyming verse are just the start here. Also on every page is a painting of a kid from Michigan and a short bio/tidbit of information about Michigan. I bought this for my granddaughter and she loves it. Familiar places and new adventures await. I can not emphasize enough how much the artwork affects the book. It's a feast for the eyes. All Michigan kids should read this book or have it read to them.

Visually enticing young readers book full of illustrations to captivate those interested in a really true adventure story. The illustrations are a work of art all by themselves. Valerie van Heest captures the drama and heroism of a young boy who becomes a man by taking on much more than he ever thought he could handle. But even more than the historical aspect of this book, the reader also gets to learn about modern day shipwreck hunting going on today and underwater photographs of the actual ship spoke of in the book are shown. This is a fantastic way to motivate young readers in maritime history and shipwreck hunting but also those interested in local West Michigan history! A must have for anyone with young children!

What a delight to wander, in these many essays, through some fascinating zones within this great academic's mind. Freedman was President of both Dartmouth Universty and the University of Iowa; and was both University Ombudsman and Law Dean at the Universtiy of Pennsylvania. He truly knows whereof he speaks. Here, instead of advocacy, he shares perspectives and joys of his life as a scholar and prominent liberal thinker -- reflecting wonderfully on both the scholarly life and on liberalism (so often unthinkingly maligned in these times the absolutism by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter). As a book collector myself (though hardly on Freedman's scale!), I am particularly fascinated by his essay on the pleasures of collecting books!

Bailey's book deals with the attitudes towards English and how they have changed over the centuries. For this purpose the author has collected an impressive amount of evidence which he presents in a convincing, not overly academic way. Bailey deals both with attitudes towards English in Great Britian itself and abroad, that is in the former colonies. A highly recommended book!

The author follows the work of Anna, an immunologist. For those who like science, this will be a great opportunity for a view from whithin. Aside from the thrill of following scientific research in its evolution, the reader is exposed to the life of Anna, and gets to know something of her rich emotional life, and her great imagination, love for life and her dedication to her work. The strive to discover and break through new frontiers goes both externally, in seek of the mechanisms of the body, and internally, in search for the motivation to carry on despite the hardships. Im short, I loved it.

This anthology examines themes of adoption in drama, fiction, poetry, and film, from Shakespeare and Dickens up to "Secrets and Lies" and "Losing Isaiah." The authors examine older myths and stereotypes of adoption and adoptive mothers that we tend to forget in current conversations, such as the "shame" of illegitimate birth and "infertile" women. Imagining Adoption also covers current debates in the adoptive community on whether to pursue information on birth parents, open adoptions, and non-traditional families. More than interesting, this book is guaranteed to open a reader to many new insights about adoption and identity!

This book is dedicated to Dr. Julian Samora (March 1, 1920 to February 2, 1996). His name is synonymous with leadership in Latino research, especially on the Mexican immigrant experience and the study of mestizaje. He was born in Southern Colorado and developed an intense pride in his Hispano heritage and roots. He is the first Mexican American to earn a PhD in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology in 1953 at Washington University, St.Louis. He was the first professor of Mexican American sociology at Michigan State University and later at the University of Notre Dame where he mentored over 50 graduate students of Latino studies. Today, the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University and the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, carry his name and legacy for scholarship on Latino heritage, history, immigration and civil rights. "Immigration and Ethnic Communities" is an edited volume of original research that pays tribute to the body of scholarship championed by Dr. Samora during the sixties, seventies and eighties. The book provides detailed statistics on the foreign born population in the United States, considers the economic patterns of transnational workers and their impact on U.S. communities, and explores both the human consequences and political ramifications of Latino immigration. This book is the first to address the Latino influx and impact within the Midwest. Dr. Samora was a co-founder of the National Council of La Raza and member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the President's Commission on Rural Poverty. Among his many awards were the White House Hispanic Heritage Award (1985) and the Aguila Azteca Medal (1991) which he received along with farm labor leader, Cesar Chavez, from Mexico's President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
