This work is far more than a cookbook. It is also a primer on successful entrepreneurship and business management in the restaurant and other service industries; a commentary on the psychology of successful business people in general and restaurateurs in particular; a monograph on healthful foods; and a memoir of the customers and staff encountered by the author during twenty-eight successful years in the restaurant business. It is superbly illustrated with photographs and paintings. The book epitomizes the elements of a successful life: love of humanity, success in a consumer-oriented business, trust in employees, optimism about customers, knowledge of fine dining in general and of Italian cuisine in particular. It is effectively an autobiography of a successful entrepreneur, husband, and father, of a man of the world who is equally comfortable in densely populated Manhattan and in the exclusive summer resort island of Nantucket. It is the culmination of decades of experience, and it is well written and very rewarding reading.

Stedman, an English officer in a mercenary force hired to end the depredations of escaped slaves, is an examplar of the 18th century naturalist, complete with botanically or zoologically accurate descriptions and paintings which grace this handsome volume. He was more unusual in his social perspectives, and maintained close friendships with people at literally every level of Surinam society. He had considerable sympathy for those at the bottom, including those he'd been hired to eliminate. This sympathy appears in some grisly images of slave punishment which his contemporary and friend, the poet and artist William Blake, engraved for the Narrative's original publication.

Stedman's graceful writing style, his obvious humanity, his wealth of scientific information, his artistic achievements, his jungle or social adventures, and his modern angst, all contribute to a lengthy and fascinating experience for the reader. Richard Price's introduction ably sets the scene.

I've taken to reading history lately, but only those works written by those actually there. This is Mary's own personal diary, kept for her two years of captivity by Indians in 1675. This is one of my more cherished books.
Her village was attacked by Indians and all present killed or taken hostage. Her neighbor's murders were described.
*Mine is a 1930 edition signed by the owners of the only 1903 edition which it was reprinted from.
Read what life (and death) was really like with the Indians as neighbors. Not the "history rewritten" version we are being taught.

-The 5 stars are for it's value to me. It is not written by a great author, nor is it many hundreds of pages long. It is a straight forward diary.

At the core of this wonderful work are six rich and evocative portraits of fascinating women from the early history of Massachusetts, each involved in the clothing trades. In her research, Miller has called upon diaries, contemporaneous journalistic accounts and public records, seeming to have left no scrap of historical cloth on the floor. Her careful attention to detail is as remarkable as it is welcome. For all this, the narrative is paced quickly and efficiently, and the result might have been fashioned--miraculously--from a single piece of cloth. Miller's vivid prose brings to life us an important and much-overlooked chapter in American history.

This book is a great summary of demings teachings and philosphies. It covers his 14 points very well. I like the management style that he uses. The book does give alot of general techniques for management, but does not realy get into detail about how to use those techniques. Overall an awesome book, glad to have read it.

Ideal for planing your trip to New England area. You will have several routs to explore this part of the country. Tips, Maps and Photographs that give you a very good picture of your trip. This will help you to don't miss any of the important places of the road.

NEW ENGLAND OUTPOST: WAR AND SOCIETY IN COLONIAL DEERFIELD, by Richard I. Melvoin is an excellent historical account of early Western MA. If you have ancestors who lived in Deerfield in the colonial era, it is fascinating to read about their lives. I visted Deerfield in June 2000 and reading the book is an excellent preparation for a visit.

This is a very important book, that much I cannot stress enough. I found a copy in the Complutense library in Madrid in 1998, and spent my days consumed by kristeva, cixous and iriguray, turning page after page in mark's and de courtivron's incredibly well-organised and informative work. if you've read toril moi's sexual/textual politics and got to grips with the generalities of the scene, then this is the next step. if you haven't this is as good a starter as any for 'feminist' food for thought.
