Maryland Books

A really helpful tool when planning a trip. Each entry has a list that front which includes contact info, how many rooms, extras, grounds, rates and directions. Then there's a writeup that gives you some flavor about the B&B, the owners, the interior design and the cooking. There are a set of indexes in the back that are really helpful for those seeking particular features (e.g. B&Bs with swimming pools, B&Bs that accept pets, near bodies of waters or mountain B&Bs) or particular location (B&Bs in the Finger Lakes region).

Being an avid reader, I rarely read a woman's perspective on history, but Pauline Wengeroff's story opened my eyes to Jewish history from a totally different viewpoint. The story is magnificent and a must for independent minded women of any age. People of the twenty-first century will be able to identify easily with a woman of the 1840-1860's. Conditions of life change, but people don't.

First, I must disclose that the author is my great uncle. The book is basically genealogical but the author has included many little histories of particular family members. It is fascinating for me to read about what my great, great grandfather valued and where he lived. Not only should this book be of interest to the Riggs family itself but should also prove of interest to those interested in banking (The Riggs Bank), American History and Maryland History. Sadly, there were a very limited number of books printed and are virtually impossible to come by. I highly recommend searching it out and delving into the Riggs Family history.

Robert Cole's World is a great book. Covering the history of Robert Cole and his family from England to their immigration to Lord Baltimore's Colony of Maryland, the book is a must for anyone interested in early American history. Background on the Cole family, 17th century tobacco cultivation, and daily life in 17th century Maryland are all incorporated into this interesting and nicely written book. Included are copies of the Cole family's inventory, as well as Robert Cole's will. For anyone interested in colonial American history and what life was like before American slavery took hold, Robert Cole's world is for you.

This is a small but interesting book which explains how occupational licensing harms consumers through higher prices and lower quality. The basic principles always apply, but the book has lost polemical value over time as the data have changed. It begs for an update.

A more recent book well worth buying is Kleiner's "Licensing Occupations: Ensuring Quality or Restricting Competition." which Amazon sells.

Everything at the beach is covered in this book from 'The Sand Lady'. She knows her stuff! The concern for the natural world and the years gone by are both present in this gem. It is just a treat to read and brings alive the old time spirit of a day by the sea. I spent many a day on that Ocean City boardwalk! There is plenty to learn and more to see in the lovely illustrations. A wonderful book for a child headed on a beach vacation or just dreaming of one! This edited volume brings together numerous noted international relations theorists on the challenging issues of regime formation, the role of science, and the role of values. Seas tie the articles together but the real contributions are theoretical.

Savario and Nolan are professional guides who have written two delightful guidebooks for kayak day trips in the area of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The books document trips the authors have made a regular part of their itinerary and are written in a narrative style that is not only informative but makes for a great armchair tour for those nasty winter days as well. I found both these books at my local library and liked them so well they had to become part of my personal library. Enjoy!

Shippensburg, PA, a relatively small town located between Chambersburg and Harrisburg in the Cumberland Valley, was on the periphery of Civil War events. Southern raiders entered the town during the Antietam and Gettysburg campaigns and a company of Shippensburg boys was raised and attached to the 130th PA Infantry Regiment, but the direct hand of the war was not otherwise felt by the town. Yet the local Historical Society has put together this handsome book that compiles innumerable scraps of information dealing with the town and its residents during the war period: newspaper accounts, letters, diary entries, a fairly complete history of Co. D (the Shippensburg company) and the 3rd PA Cavalry, muster rolls, notes on casualties, biographical summaries of individual soldiers, cemetery internments and headstone inscriptions - seemingly everything that could be found tying the town to the war. It's an impressive piece of local history regarding the town and its war experiences. There are also lots of photographs. The book is something any town would be proud of.

Mrs. Russell offers insight and understanding to this often misunderstood population. She is a voice for all of the silent sisters.
