My husband and I had a wonderful weekend exploring Western Maryland due to this book. We have driven through Western Maryland many times and nothing seemed to make us want to stop and explore the area. This book did. We saw beauty, found a wonderful place to eat and enjoyed some simple shopping.

Good guide for obvious places and spots you never thought of
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-28
This Frommer's Guide got me where I wanted to go -- and pointed out a few places that I never would have thought of. Sure, it's a great guide for Baltimore, Annapolis, the Eastern Shore. The information on area restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions are great. Plus there were some interesting tidbits about out-of-the-way places worth a visit. I never thought about a trip to Wilmington for instance. Yet after reading this book I found some great places to visit: good restaurants, a beautiful inn, and an intriguing contemporary museum, for instance.
The reviews were accurate and didn't steer me wrong once. It's a solid guide for both states.

Valuable Resource

We live within a couple of hours from D.C., and find this to be a wonderful resource. I would recommend it to people who live nearby and are looking for a fun family outing for the day or weekend.

Descriptions of landmarks are accurate and up-to-date. Directions give street addresses and nearest sbuway station. A city map is needed since no directions are given from the station to the landmarks.

For families spending less than a week in D.C., I would recommend purchasing a more detailed Frommers or Fodors guide since they offer more bang for your buck. This book only lists attractions. For restaurants (besides Hard Rock) and hotels, you will need another guide.

A must read for any wildlife law enforcement officer, waterfowler or nature lover.

I just finished this book and must say that I could not put it down once I started. Mr. Parker, the author, was a Special Agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This book describes the time in the late 1960's and early 1970's that he spent working waterfowl violations in the Chesapeake Bay area. It is a gripping account of some of the harrowing adventures he and other wildlife officers encountered while working the Chesapeake. At a time when baiting, over-limit shooting and a general disrespect for wildlife conservation and the men who enforced the conservation laws was at it's peak, Mr. Parker and the men who worked with him were becoming a very prominent force on the waterfowling scene. As the author put it, they "taught a little conservation" up and down the bay. If you love waterfowling, hunting or conservation of our natural resources, you will enjoy this book.

An excellent visual walk through the rich history of Maryland's best kept secret

As a new resident of Garrett County, one of many who fell in love with the quiet beauty and peaceful idyllic life the region embodies, I had a vauge sense of the history that built this area. As you travel the streets and survey the landscape the feeling of history is palpable; towns, streets, buildings, bursting with stories to tell. This book tells those stories. In Garrett County, a Postcard History Series, you are taken back through time to the beginning of the trek west that opened the mountain region that we know today. Every picture post card gives you a glimpse into a view that in many cases are still standing. The photographs, with snipets of life captured in the words on the back printed underneath, take you to a time and place that we can usually only imagine. Oddly enough many of the towns today retain the same look and feel of the postcards, and my children and I spent an enchanting Saturday driving through Oakland, Mountain Lake Park and Deer Park looking for the places depicted in the book. My whole family found the book to be an entertaining and educational visual stroll through history. Definitely perfect for a rainy afternoon curled up by the fireplace with a cup of tea book. I will keep a copy at my lake house for visitors and encourage all who have ever been to Garrett County to get a copy of your own.

A great story of people, management, and politics
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-27
An interesting book that's not just about the Baltimore fire. It's about people - how they react to an emergency, how they react when a situation gets out of hand, how they cooperate, how they refuse to cooperate. It's about politics. It's about managing in a crisis. It's about bravery, including the quiet bravery of staying on the job, where you're needed, even if where you're needed is on a freezing street corner. It's about failing to prepare for unthinkable disaster and recovering from that failure. It's about competence and incompetence, followed by finger pointing and second guessing.

The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. Imagine a fire that consumes 70 square blocks and over 1500 buildings.

A lesson in community spirit
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

What a powerful story Dr. Knepper tells of this entirely planned community originally created as an experiment in socialism. In addition to a thorough description of historical details and events, each person is so vividly painted in their full complexities as to make this a fascinating and almost breezy read.
I was captivated by this town who brought a developer's greed all the way to the Supreme Court, and the Capraesque fashion in which this community dealt with the McCarthy era witch hunt. I cannot recommend this enough as a sociology or government text book, as well as a worthy addition to any personal library.

I've been going to Ocean City, Maryland all my life, and I try to obtain any books about the town.

I got this one, and was very happy with it. It perfectly illustrates the history of Ocean City through post cards. And full color pictures of the post cards.

Included is a brief history of Ocean City.

Highly recommended. Buy it now. Back in the late nineties, a similar book called "Down the Ocean" was published. It's now out of print and pretty hard to find. So, I'd say get this if you can.
