The Importance of Shore Life in America

What a timely, informative book and CD set as America grapples with the loss of culture in New Orleans and other Gulf Shore Communities in the South. From Bridge to Boardwalk offers a rare close-up view of the people, work, life, art and traditions of the Eastern Shore and encourages a visit to this rich region soon! The guidebook and CD set are excellent travel companions.

In Search of Maryland's Real Eastern Shore

If you want to get to know Maryland's real Eastern Shore, I highly recommend From Bridge to Boardwalk. This 75-page booklet is packed with short essays that speak to traditions that have given this once isolated peninsula its own unique character, its own speech patterns, its own sense of being and belonging. Penned by folklorists and community scholars, the essays give the reader an insider's view of Shore culture. "Names of boats traditional to the Chesapeake sound like poetry, a lyrical ode to another time and place ...skipjacks, log canoes, brograns, bugeyes, pungies..." [p. 35] As a photographer, I especially appreciate the black and white photographs spotted throughout the booklet including archival images by three renowned documentary photographers (A. Aubrey Bodine, H. Robbins Hollyday, and Robert de Gast). Two CD's, each about an hour in length, are sleeved inside the booklet offering first-person "sound portraits" by traditional artists on the Shore. A few of the tracks are predictable-boat builders, decoy carvers, gospel singers-while others take you to places few of us have ever been-a muskrat skinner, duck call maker, a crab picker turned artist. All tracks are accented with music: banjo, Dobro, guitar among others. With its wire binding, the booklet rests easy on the lap as you make your way down the highway. If you wish to dig deeper the booklet also offers a foldout map of the Shore plus a handy reference section. Here you will find a convenient book list with a range of (Shore) topics from decoys to watercraft. Next time around I would slip a new cover on the booklet with a photograph, but apart from that From Bridge to Boardwalk is a one of a kind offering-a true bridge to where lies the real spirit of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

you can finish this book in one sitting, if you are so inclined. it is the first hand account of thomas jones, who hid and cared for booth and herold in a pine thicket for 5 days and 4 nights before he launched them off into the potomac for virginia. another person put into a situation by booth. he makes no excuses. it is what it is.

The fact that Early was able to make this raid is in itself a miracle. This is by far the most entertaining and best researched book on this subject. It offers great fun and deep understanding of this most important Civil War action. Early is a complex figure and Vandiver shows us the person under the facade.

Many works about Jubal Early's 1864 Valley Campaign have been produced, but none come close to this one. Frank Vandiver's JUBAL'S RAID stands out as, by far, the most lively and insightful of all the 1864 Valley histories, keeping the reader riveted throughout. This is a superb book that should be on every Civil War library shelf.

At last there's a book that celebrates the great variety of beautiful Judaica being hand crafted today in America. The pictures are great, showing a wonderful variety of objects, styles and materials. The text is delightful reading as it profiles scores of fascinating artists. And the intro and glossary are an education in modern Jewish art history and ritual ceremonies.

Politics at it's best

Kal's book illustrates (no pun intended) the best of the editorial cartoon world. Kal is able to sum up in one frame what writers take columns and columns to say. It takes a very talented person to capture feelings, humor, politics and general news in just a few - very deft - strokes of a pen. Even though there is an entire section of the book dedicated to Baltimore issues, the book transcends it's locale. The chapters on international and national politics portray the last four years of the Clinton administration beautifully - and cleverly! Kal is a great, world-class cartoonist. His drawings appear regulary in The Economist of London and other papers and magazines around the world. Baltimore is lucky to have him - and now others can see his works in this fine collection.

I found Lavish Legacies to be a very scholarly book with an inviting style of writing. The history of Baltimore Album quilts and others was wonderfully presented. The pictures of the quilts are breathtaking--capturing the fabric, craftmanship, and patina beautifully. I would highly recommend this book. It is a historic quilt book based on research from the experts (past and present) who have loved these these quilts for over one hundred and fifty years--which I think adds to the charm and preservation of the quilts.

This is a great book for the unaware to learn about a piece of Maryland history. It is written in a format for the younger generation. I grew up in the area of the Lord Calvert mansion. I found this book very interesting.

Suitable for school reading list.

This book would be good for 8th grade Maryland students to have on a summer reading list, or for reading in some other fashion. Maryland was as much a site for "pilgrims," in the general sense of the word, as were the Congregationalist settlers in New England, who unfortunately have been allowed by writers of old elementary history books and song to appropriate the designation as a proper title.
The name of Calvert is too little known. The Maryland settlement represented a first incidence in the colonies of a somewhat extended religious toleration, something noteworthy by its absence in Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. The freedom of conscience now enjoyed in America was first conceived in the minds of the men who initially settled on the Maryland shores, and some would claim that spirit, despite subsequent severe attack on it, persisted in enough men through the generations to have a direct effect on the religious rights expressed in our constitution.
Nice drawings, large print, glossary, and suitable length make it good for students. A+

A Great Historical Reference

Since the collection of "Letters from Annapolis" spans a period of more than 120 years, they cannot help but reflect the events that shaped our nation. For example, the letters of Oliver Batcheller offers a student's view of the news surrounding the start of the Civil War. Upon the bombardment of Fort Sumpter, he writes "the Academy is likely to be rid of those who do not wish to resign just now, and most of the Sourtherners have tendered their resignations." But the book had some lighter sides too. Regardless of the year, letters to parents often included passages like "thanks much for the money you sent" or " believe me...it wasn't my fault!" Thanks to editor Ann Marie Drew for a great work. I would not only recommend "Letters" to any history buff but believe it would be especially valuable to a prospective student wishing to get a closer look at the life of a midshipman

I have read this book over and over again because it is unbelievable. It has letters from numerous former midshipmen from almost the time the 'Naval School' opened, till the time when a man became a Naval Academy midshipman in 1969. It is a great read and it has great details of the life of midshipmen.
