Basics for the Beginning Technician-It's All Here
Helpful Votes: 30 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-01
I really like this book as it covers the basics and has examples where you have to use what you've learned to do the exercises. The reading is pretty dry but I still refer back to the book often when I'm trying to remember what a "double bottom" means or what an "ascending triangle" helps you predict.

A Practical Book Written By An Investor

Review Date: 1998-10-04
This is a practical book about Technical Analysis written by an investor with over 30 years of experience who has "been there and done it". The book has a section with exercises. If I had a complaint, it would be that the patterns shown in the example charts are too clear; things are not that crystal clear in real life. Anyone who reads this book should also read "Trading The Plan" by Robert Deel. Both are very practical.

Simple, Concise, Powerful Read

If you have never read a technical analysis book then I highly recommend this above everything else. For startes it's barely over 200 pages short, with more than half those pages dedicated to charts. Simply put you only read about 100 pages.

The beauty is those 100 pages are powerful and geared perfectly for the beginner. After reading this book I was bitting at the bit to apply my new knowledge, and no longer regard picking stocks as a crap-shoot.

You CAN educate yourself to financial freedom, and this book will help you do that.

"Maine is burning!"
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-27
I had never heard of this book when I happened to see it in the gift shop of the place where my wife and I were staying for a few days last month in Bar Harbor, ME (one of the most beautiful places in this country!). As a person always interested in unusual historical events, I purchased this book, and I am very happy that I did. It is a well-written, extremely lucid account of the great Maine fire of October 1947, which really devastated that state. By the terms of our current western wildfires, which destroy millions of acres, this was small (only a bit over 200,000 acres were hit), but a lot of the destruction happened in occupied areas, when homes, businesses, churches, schools, and almost entire towns were lost. This book is at its best when it recounts the human aspect of this series of fires, and the author has collected newsprint accounts, in addition to interviewing the people involved at the time. It is a true tale of heartbreak and heroism, and it shows the resolution and sheer grit of the folks from Maine. They are wonderful people, and this book is quite a tribute to them!

An exciting book. Historicaly accurate telling of the great fire in October 1947. It grips you like a work of fiction, but all the accounts are true. The only stories I've heard of this disaster that are in more detail, are from my family members who were there and fought the fire. Great read, and highly recommended.

Fires in Maine

Review Date: 2006-12-10
Mainers are quickly coming upon the 60th anniversary of the most calamitous natural disaster to hit their state - the 1947 fires that burned a huge swath of land and property in the southern part of the state as well as on Mt. Desert Island. The fires struck in October under ideal forest fire conditions: a summer drought that had stretched into autumn and windy conditions. Virtually anything generating heat - even extinguished burnt matches - were enough to start blazes. Fires spread quickly and devastatingly in York and Oxford Counties, where entire towns were destroyed. At the same time, 200 miles down East, another outbreak of fires on Mt. Desert Island destroyed million-dollar summer mansions and threatened the town of Bar Harbor; the famed Jackson Laboratory, a center for cancer research, was reduced to ashes. One big problem in containing the fires was that many of them burned under ground along root systems for days before flaring up again; many fires that looked extinguished actually weren't. Butler presents a detailed and vivid picture of the causes, spread, and resultant destruction of the fires, and also specific accounts of the many fire-fighters, their acts of bravery and perseverance - and terror - battling the blazes. Fifteen people died in the fires and 200,000 acres and many homes were destroyed. Joyce Butler's book is a good account of this natural disaster.

I read this book before venturing out on my own thru hike in 2001. The author aimed her writing for women specificaly but there is more to garner for all. Unfortunately Beverly died last year. But her writing is part of her legacy.

Outdoor women, your handbook has arrived!

This book is very informative for women planning to spend time in the wilderness. The title specifies thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, but many of the topics covered are of interest to women who love spending time outdoors. Input from numerous sources is well blended to offer balanced, solid advice. I was surprized at the diversity of topics covered. The bibliography is comprehensive, very helpful when you want to dig deeper. If you're looking for answers to issues concerning women in the wilderness, this is the book to buy.

The "real thing"--Real answers from real backpackers.

Review Date: 2000-03-28
This is a book long awaited by women thinking about hiking, or planning to hike the Appalachian Trail. It was worth the wait. Beverly has taken the responses of experienced women long-distance hikers from surveys and questionnaires and skillfully woven them into a narrative form that gives answers to all the questions a prospective female hiker might have: how to prepare for a long-distance hike; what clothing and gear works best; safety, health, nutrition, sanitation, privacy; what about the folks back home; self-image, motivation, strength, and determination; and the benefits of doing a long-distance hike, facing challenges, and reaching your goals. The bibliography of 143 items was compiled by a research librarian and Appalachian Trail backpacker and includes A.T. guidebooks, planning guides, books on backpacking and outdoor skills, and a special list of "Women Outdoors" books that includes highly motivating stories of women who set out to do daring things and achieved their goals. This book is the result of a collaborative effort, with real answers from hundreds of real women, including Beverly herself. The other current book for women backpackers (Adrienne Hall's "Backpacking"--a Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guide) plus "Women & Thru-Hiking on the Appalachian Trail" are a perfect combination for a woman contemplating a long-distance backpacking trek. I have read and enjoyed both of these excellent books.

Well written. had to keep reminding myself this was written in the 1800's. Good overview of the islands and reflections of life in those times.

I had trouble putting this book down. I only did to make it last longer.
Celia totally loved her garden. She wrote about the flowers she planted, the birds who came to visit, and her battle with slugs. How I pulled for her to defeat those slugs!
This book had me itching to work in my own garden. I plan to read it every spring.
If you find it interesting reading about other people's exploits with their own gardens then you should enjoy this delightful book.

I read it in two days, because this book is so absorbing, no bullsh..t orientated, focusing on facts, not speculation, not legends. It is impressive the ammount of Americans who payed the ultimate price while serving in RAF.

Very good !!!

Although not focusing in combat narratives, Caine did a stupendous job!! HE follows the character who flew in Eagle Squadrons before and after they passe through that units (71, 121 and 133 RAF Squadrons. He end the myth that American FOurth Fighter Group was made mainly by ex-Eagle pilots. They were minority there. It has an apendix which dates the Killed in action, the aces. And it gives a good picture of how RAF worked in those days. Great, great, great !!!

This is an excellent book that should be read by every person with any serious interest in the Civil War. It is generally clear and informative, frequently funny or witty, and generally well written. My only objection to it is the author's very heavy pro-Union bias. If you get this book, be sure and get a Southern account to balance it.

One of the most famous regiments of the Civil War was the 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers. Fromed in 1862, the regiment saw action in some of the fiercest campaigns and battles of the war; Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, Peebles Farm and Five Forks. It also was present at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, North Anna, Bethesda Church, Gravelly Run and Appomattox, where it had the distinct honor of being of the regiments to formally receive the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Originally commanded by Colonel Adelbert Ames, leadership of the regiment soon fell upon the shoulders of the most famous civilian soldier of the war--Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. At Gettysburg, Chamberlain and the 20th Maine anchored the Union line on Little Round Top and helped to save the day, and the battle, for the Federal cause. The regiment fought with excellence in several later campaigns but will always be known for its brilliant and gallant performance at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. After the war only one veteran of the unit attempted to chronicle the exploits of the 20th Maine Infantry. In 1882, Reverend Theodore Gerrish published "Army Life". Although there are brief, scattered accounts written by other veterans of the unit's wartime exploits, this remains the only full-length book, purposely published by a 20th Maine veteran.

The author does an excellent job of putting the reader in her characters' shoes (or lack thereof). Her sympathetic telling of a forgotten story brings alive the most difficult time in U.S. history. Although tragic in parts, the book does not leave a bleak after-taste. Far from that, it leaves the reader wanting to more deeply explore the people and times surrounding Billy and Elijah. I'm putting this author on my "watch" list for future books.

Factual historical account...and a fun read!

Jean Mary has provided readers with a solid historical account of an all but forgotten Maine citizen, in a most interesting and entertaining fashion. Her 'live' account allows the reader to experience the life and times of the title character. I certainly look forward to her next book!

That's what the back cover read of the paperback copy I got of this book when I was a young teenager. Far too young to read the contents, but so worth the trouble I'd find myself in if my parents ever found it hidden away. This book is dirty, humorous and an absolutely fabulous read. Don't expect this to be some Harlequin romance novel of sappy b.s. This is erotica at it's finest. I highly recommend Blue Skies, No Candy. Just be sure to keep it locked away from the prying eyes of your teens. Haha!

I was introduced to this book back in '76 when I was 12! The cover alone, intrigued me and I never forgot it! But, being an adolescent back then, I was afraid to buy the book because I thought my parents would find it and have a heart-attack! So I waited until I grew older---not realizing that the book could be out of print! Once I did find it, I couldn't put it down! It lived up to all my expectations from my childhood and it was even a bit humorous!!! I would definitely recommend this book!
