I read it in two days, because this book is so absorbing, no bullsh..t orientated, focusing on facts, not speculation, not legends. It is impressive the ammount of Americans who payed the ultimate price while serving in RAF.

Although not focusing in combat narratives, Caine did a stupendous job!! HE follows the character who flew in Eagle Squadrons before and after they passe through that units (71, 121 and 133 RAF Squadrons. He end the myth that American FOurth Fighter Group was made mainly by ex-Eagle pilots. They were minority there. It has an apendix which dates the Killed in action, the aces. And it gives a good picture of how RAF worked in those days. Great, great, great !!!

This is an excellent book that should be read by every person with any serious interest in the Civil War. It is generally clear and informative, frequently funny or witty, and generally well written. My only objection to it is the author's very heavy pro-Union bias. If you get this book, be sure and get a Southern account to balance it.

One of the most famous regiments of the Civil War was the 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers. Fromed in 1862, the regiment saw action in some of the fiercest campaigns and battles of the war; Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, Peebles Farm and Five Forks. It also was present at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, North Anna, Bethesda Church, Gravelly Run and Appomattox, where it had the distinct honor of being of the regiments to formally receive the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Originally commanded by Colonel Adelbert Ames, leadership of the regiment soon fell upon the shoulders of the most famous civilian soldier of the war--Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. At Gettysburg, Chamberlain and the 20th Maine anchored the Union line on Little Round Top and helped to save the day, and the battle, for the Federal cause. The regiment fought with excellence in several later campaigns but will always be known for its brilliant and gallant performance at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. After the war only one veteran of the unit attempted to chronicle the exploits of the 20th Maine Infantry. In 1882, Reverend Theodore Gerrish published "Army Life". Although there are brief, scattered accounts written by other veterans of the unit's wartime exploits, this remains the only full-length book, purposely published by a 20th Maine veteran.

The author does an excellent job of putting the reader in her characters' shoes (or lack thereof). Her sympathetic telling of a forgotten story brings alive the most difficult time in U.S. history. Although tragic in parts, the book does not leave a bleak after-taste. Far from that, it leaves the reader wanting to more deeply explore the people and times surrounding Billy and Elijah. I'm putting this author on my "watch" list for future books.

Jean Mary has provided readers with a solid historical account of an all but forgotten Maine citizen, in a most interesting and entertaining fashion. Her 'live' account allows the reader to experience the life and times of the title character. I certainly look forward to her next book!

Not only have I read this collection, I've HEARD it, both in reality, at a reading, and in my mind each time I read - and re-read, Beete's words. They drip like coherent honey, barrel like whiskey, swallow like birds. I loved it.

This work is an exhaustive study of the Luftwaffe's inventory from 1931 - 1945. Naturally the famous are here: Ju87, Me109/110/262, Fw190, He111/162, but the obscure as well: the Bv40 Interceptor Glider(!), the asymmetric Bv141 observation aircraft, and the He100 fighter. The entries (with drawings or photographs) of these one-off variants and technological near-misses make the volume worth owning. Over 150 fixed-wing aircraft, gliders and helicopters are combined with an excellent overview of the Luftwaffe from creation to destruction. Additionally, appendices contain the Luftwaffe's chain of command, and a glossary of Luftwaffe-speak.
If you are a student of WW2, and particularly the airwar, then you should definitely try to pick up a copy. Highly recommended.

There are quite a few books about this subject on the market, and I rate this one second best. Top of the market in my eyes is 'Warplanes of the Third Reich' by William Green (672 pages!), but this book can serve as a nice companion or indeed as a replacement if your budget is a bit tight. The main advantage this book has compared to William Green masterpiece is the colour artwork, which is sadly lacking in the Green book. The only thing in which the comparison falls out negative against Green is the amount of information about each individual plane, but there is more general information about the Luftwaffe in WW2 to make this up. Highly recommended indeed.

What an enjoyable book! As a 19th century novel,it's slow paced enough to reflect upon the value of one's life and work. The young heroine's plan to study medicine is unaccepted by many people, but Nan is determined. She is lucky to have the backing of her guardian, himself a doctor. His thoughts about and support of her decision are very progressive for the time, and heart-warming. Nan's choice is challenged when she meets an attractive young man. The mores of the time demand that she choose between marriage and a profession. The weight that a profession carried at that time made it more a vocation than simply a job. A person chose seriously, his/her future as her life-long identity and contribution to humanity. This novel was thought producing, and its perspective interesting - I recommend it.

This little book gives us insight into the New England culture of the late 1800's and what it was like to grow up as a girl in a small town. Having lived in recent years in the very town of the authoress, I found it authentic in the characterization of the community she described. She portrayed the simplicity of New England living and their penchant for using words sparingly. The inspiration came from tidbits of philosophy for the development of the strength of character to overcome the expectation for one's role in life in a way that was not confrontational, but realistically the right thing to do. This little book reminds us that character and manners can make life much more pleasureable.

exhilarating police procedural thriller spins into Sci Fi

In 1959 the ice storm of the century cripples New England and isolates communities like Dunston Falls, Maine. Electricity is limited, and food supplies and heating are dwindling. Fifty-three years old Sheriff David Peck understands the crisis and with his deputy Jay Bender and the mayor Ed Kranston begins to bring people to the only safe spots left: the church and hospital. Diner owner Deb Robertson provides food.
Peck and Bender search for stranded residents. When they reach Doris White's home, they find her dead; she was raped, knifed, and strangled. Peck quietly investigates the homicide, but heeding the advice of top officials to avoid a panic tells no one. However, he begins suffering severe headaches for no apparent reason and keeps envisioning a fatal fire that looks so vivid, but has no recall of such. The murder of Deb follows; since he just made love to her and was very attracted to her, a shook up Peck vows to find the killer.
This exhilarating police procedural thriller takes a wild twist into science fiction territory that works very well although surviving the storm and a serial killer is an exciting story line in of itself. Readers will receive two shocks; first the spin from mystery-suspense to sci fi, which explains the headaches; and then the identity of the killer and why. Even as fans will enjoy this entertaining tale, the audience will also wonder if the spin was needed as the survival saga was a powerful hook.

Really enjoyable fly fishing guide for those who love Maine, or are planning a trip to different regions. 154 pages, plenty of black & white photos throughout, with excellent color photos in the middle. One-page maps for each region add value. 95% of content is fly fishing for trout and salmon, and the only thing missing is more about smallmouth bass fishing with spin-casting tackle.
