Charming slice of the simple life in Maine

In this memoir, Ogilvie humorously writes about her life on Gay's Island off the coast of Maine living in a house aptly called "Tide's Way" which she shared with her married friends Roy and Dot. The book starts out with their move from another island to Gay's Island, adventurously transporting their furniture by boat. She writes about boat trips to Port Clyde to get groceries; rowing trip excursions; attempts at building different "writer's studios" in the woods, and more. She also writes about their humorous and loveable pets that you won't forget - Blackie the sheep with "black felt ears"; Tristan and Soldi the cats; and Smokey and Susan, the dogs. Anyone who likes reading about a simple life connected to nature will enjoy this book. If you like this book, I recommend reading Gladys Taber's books and also Louise Dickinson Rich's works.

When they are done with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, The Secret of the Missing Grave and the sequel The Mystery of the Black Moriah are a good move. They are fast paced and enjoyable with just enough "As if!" to keep it fun. They are not gory, and the characters (who are 14) are believable and not boring.

I read this book before my daughter did, to preview it. I really enjoyed the plot and the lesson that the story taught. It was just long enough to hold a 7 year olds attention without getting into deep confusing plot twists. If you want a book that is fun to read, easy to follow, and one that you don't have to preview before your child reads it, any of the books in this series will do. I will buy more of these books because I know I can hand her one to read and know that anything that comes up in discussion from this book will teach a lesson.

Linda Call Dodge does an outstanding job documenting the identity of Nathan FISH and his descendants. Her attention to detail and excellent documentation of sources make this an outstanding item for anyone researching these family lines. She even peppers the documentation with photographs that bring the family story to life.

I don't read much poetry, but as a father of a 10 month old, I very much enjoyed reading Nests. In Nests, Kara Provost uses certain themes: nature, the human body and also vivid description in the five senses to deliver a "story" (sort of) of a mother's love for her children.
Sometimes these poems carry a sad story like the first in the chapbook, Broken, about a stillborn birth. Others show the vulnerability of children (and echo every parent's fears) whether it be a flightless baby bird on a sidewalk (in the title poem) or a description of a mother picking up broken glass at a playground to protect the "mouse bare feet" of her newborn daughter (Picking Up)
Despite the very real moments in which Provost wrestles with her fears, the poems carry a sense of optimism that is neither corny nor canned. In Nests, she describes the lasting resilience of bird's nests: "the nests remain. Woven so well they are waterproof...I see them in winter's denuded trees: twig, bed, feather bowl, still beautiful" In September 11: Before and After, she uses a simple (but lovely) list of tactile sensations (like the flavor of curry and sun shining through cloth) as a sort of balance against the terrible violence leveled against innocents on Sep 11.
Like any good book of poetry, Nests bears repeated reading, and I recommend it to any parent who has a taste for the literary.

Maureen Alsop's "Nightingale Habit" is a collection of exquisitely rendered and masterfully crafted poems which captivate the reader with their continually surprising imagery and use of language. The poems are grounded firmly in a concrete reality that is at once familiar and unsettling, requiring the reader to explore his or her own experience of reality from entirely new perspectives, yielding insights that range from the physical to the metaphysical. Alsop's poetry will transport you deeper into yourself, but be prepared: the way in will be filled with shock, humor, and intentionally unbearable beauty.
