A feast of the spirit, downeast

Review Date: 2008-01-08
This small book is not only a very friend tour guide to the institutions and locales of the spirit in Maine, but also provides a thorough and entirely readable overview of contemporary faith life downeast. The author's contemplative, yet conversational writing style, particularly in her explanations of some of the more esoteric, obscure, and overtly theological aspects and concepts, is perfect for such a work. The reading experience was not unlike many a friendly discussion of metaphysical concerns over tea and toast. Whether explaining the intricacies of Bahai or Spiritualism or examining the simplicity of the Amish and the Shakers or describing the life affirmation of Zen or Kairos the prison ministry, the author is spot-on in her exposition and narration. There's tons of fascinating trivia here as well, such as that the model for the painting AMERICAN MADONNA, which serves as the altarpiece at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Portland, was Robert Frost's sister Jeanie.
As someone who is moving to Maine in the near future, the book presented me with lots of ideas I'll want to explore once I get there. As the subtitle A SEEKER'S GUIDE suggests, this is vital information for any seeker, native or newcomer. Celestially highly recommended.

Fun with the Family in Maine is a comprehensive guide for activities and fun destinations for kids. Our family has already used the guide several times on our excursions to Maine and all of the tips we took from the book have been a big hit with all 5 of our kids. It helps immensely that the author is a parent of young children and that she adds her own personal experiences with some of the destinations. This is a fun-filled and very well written travel book that I would highly recommend to anyone who plans a trip to Maine!!

The book--it's only 30 pages-- is about how to save money on your wedding, and it had one idea that saved us a bundle -- having a morning wedding. It was actually quite unique and lovely, and cost us under $4K, including our honeymoon. I've always been cheap, but this book helped us think outside the box.

This is a beautifully written story, including timeless black and white photographs, about a 6 year old boy's first experience as a sternman on a lobster boat. It is a classic rite of passage story. My 5 year old son loves it. We have read it countless times. I highly recommend it.

The most complete book on fish history in New England

This is one of the most interesting books about the Gulf of Maine I have ever read. Apart from the immediate content, the book was written with such optimism (about 50 years ago) and proves to be an amazing reality check on our current state.

This book looks like a college textbook but reads like a good novel. If you are interested in learning (in a refreshing post-college reading level) about the Gulf of Maine and the marine wildlife there, this is the book.

The Highest Quality Regional Guide I've Ever Seen!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-30
My job in the small boat industry requires that I travel to various places on or near the water. As a rabid angler and fish watcher I can't bear the thought of being anyplace where new, different or quality fish might be caught or observed without taking a crack at them. On these trips my time is limited so I have to plan my outings carefully. As a result I've acquired a small library of regional fishing guides to study before each trip in order to pursue my piscatorial passions most efficiently. Luckily, I'm required to visit the state of Maine on a frequent basis. Fortunately, I discovered Fishing Maine, 2nd Ed. by Tom Seymour. This is the most complete and most intelligently written regional guide I've ever seen. If you follow Seymour's advice regarding locations, tackle, technique and seasons you are almost certain to catch plenty of fish. His recommendations for each site are very specific and accurate. Everything about this book is superior, from the writing style, illustrations, choice of type, to the paperstock. Seymour and Lyons Press should be very proud of what they've produced. I often find myself thumbing through this book and wishing for an excuse to visit Maine so that I can check out more fishing sites, firsthand.
