A Canoeist's Sketchbook is an anthology of canoeing essays written by a dedicated canoeist, covering topics that range from exploring the wilderness, to the joy of paddling, to practical advice for canoeing and camping in remote locations. A handful of black-and-white illustrations add a genteel touch to this fond reminiscence of experiencing nature, as vivid as can be experienced short of going out to see for oneself. Recommended, enjoyable, and practical reading for anyone interested in taking up canoeing as a hobby.

The author does a great job narrating the history of the Islands of Casco Bay. I bought the book because my Dad, who grew up on Peaks Island, is pictured on page 71.

Stewart Conn is absolutely amazing. His imagery leaves the reader with a lingering feeling of connection with everything that is presented. Conn presents us with a clear picture of life in Scotland, and gives us a mental tour of the places he has been and the experiences he has had. His poems are incredible! I highly reccommend this book and other books by him.

The Definitive Work about the Central Mass. Railroad
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-11
For anyone interested in studying the history of the Central Massachusetts Railroad that ran from Boston through the Clinton Tunnel and out to Northampton, this is the definitive work on the subject. The entire history of the line from conception to construction to the eventual operation by the Boston and Maine RR is documented in detail. The volume is lavishly illustrated with beautiful clear black and white photos of virtually every station and whistle stop along the line, along with the many locomotives and doodlebugs and RDCs that plied the rails. The book was published in 1975, and 10 years later the Boston and Maine Historical Society published an addendum in their magazine entitled "The Central Mass: 10 years later" which contains valuable errata, and over a dozen more photographs of late operations and accidents in the twilight years. This is a wonderful book, well worth the $100 average price it commands when it is avaiable, and it is rarely seen.

A superb souvenir book for Maine vacationers

A Century Apart: Maine Then & Now is a gorgeous visual and historic tour of Maine's landscapes and cities. Author Cindy McIntyre was an avid collector of Maine postcards; inspired by the vintage photographs, she sought to compare snapshots of present-day Maine with images past, revealing striking differences and similarities. The text recounts changes in the last hundred years in various Maine towns, while the full-color paintings and photographs often display striking contrasts when placed side by side. A superb souvenir book for Maine vacationers, and a trip down memory lane for longtime Maine residents.

So happy to have read "A Change of Pace." Read and reread. The poems sparkle with light reflected from everyday landscapes. There is the squinty glare of a Provincetown beach, the stark florescence of hospital corridors, the red hot glow of fire-bellied frog . Gently strung together, Scudder's lights illuminate these scenes with great tenderness and humor. Looking forward to her next collection.

Great help

I've been studying for the middle school Praxis for about 3 months now. I took it in Aug. and failed. Recently I have purchased the REA book, but I can see now that it's VERY outdated. The New Cliff's prep is extremely helpful. If you don't already own one, I would recommend purchasing a graphing calculator. This reivew is not too lenghty, and points out the important parts of the test. It also provides the key strokes for the calculator, so it saves time on the actual exam. There are 3 practice tests, and, unlike previous testing materials, I have yet to encounter a mistake. This CAN be your sole study material. I took the Praxis again a week ago, so I am await the results.
PS the only other advice I can give to the future Praxis examinees, is to practice, practice, practice. Get an old Geometry or Algebra book, and make your study meaningful. Remember what you've practiced for.

This book is really cool with it's aerial views of the coast line from Connecticut to Maine. It's really good to see what some of the harbors and coast lines look like before you try to venture into them with a boat.
