An excellent read..reminiscent of home-spun Kentucky tales by the late Jesse Stuart. It has this "stuck in Godforsaken Texas" boy wishing he was home on the banks of Kentucky Lake.

The Springfield woman's club present this cookbook. We feel, however, that this is more than a cookbook. It is the essence of the spirit of Washington county. We have combined a taste of our past through photographs and sample of our southern cooking through recipes. Hospitality abounds in this area, and it is because people are so generous and caring that we have been able to complete this book.

This was my first gardening book and I have read it many times over. The book is very logically organized, with sections on annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, grasses, bulbs, and water gardens. There even is an appendix devoted to shady gardens. While perhaps not comprehensive, the plants chosen are those that are classic to Tennessee and Kentucky. The author has a very down to earth style in writing, touching on the basics of soil/light/water requirements, routine care, companion planting, and personal favorites. The photos are very nice. I have found the book to be a great resource for choosing plants for where I live in middle Tennessee, and the style of the writing is simply enjoyable to read. I have read it many many times and have not tired of it. If you live in this area, it is a great first book to get you started. If you are an advanced gardener, you might not find it quite comprehensive enough, but I still think you would find it enjoyable.

An engrossing history of the Kentucky mining industry. A very factual history of the exploitation of a land and its people by large steel and mining companies. The most important revelation of this book: they took everything and left nothing to the state and its miners.

Dr. Clark was a family friend who did a great deal for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The book beautifully describles a life well spent as both a very kind man and a generous public servant.

A very good read. I'm not quite down with it, but a great book. There's no self-hype here by Couch. The authors do a great job taking a story of "small town boy makes good" into a story all of us can relate to in one way or another. I've been a Tim Couch fan ever since he came to Cleveland, and you'll enjoy reading about how he gets there. A definite must-read.

"Time on Target" Hits Mark

Most biographies about World War II participants have focused on two distinct groups of persons: those that served as high ranking military or political leaders or those who served as ordinary soldiers in the field. This follows the well-established practice of studying history from either above or below. While both of these types of studies are important and useful, those in the middle strata of a conflict can enlighten and inform on a much broader range of topics. General William R. Buster's memoir "Time on Target" is a first-rate example of this type of scholarship.
Buster recounts his personal and professional experiences from his graduation from the West Point class of 1940 to his command of a battalion as a Lieutenant Colonel. Buster was one of the first officers in the US Army to begin training with armor and mechanized artillery, and was instrumental in development of tactics and theories for use by these forces. Buster was assigned to the Second Armored Division, and served throughout North Africa, Normandy, and central Europe with this organization. With his unique positions witin the military higherarchy, Buster recounts wonderful episodes involving general officers to privates.
Buster also observes non-military functions and activities, which makes this a unique World War II narrative. He gives colorful accounts of travelling the country in his newly purchased Pontiac convertable, courting his wife-to-be Mildred, and army-base life. Buster also tells of the death of close friends and interaction with refugees and homeless families in Europe. The Postdam Conference and refugee-assistance mission are also documented by Buster.
This book is a useful tool for anyone interested in World War II. Buster relates military, social, and technical information from one of the most unique perspectives during the war. While other works may give more details or a better overall coverage of the war, few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.

Well-known aerospace experts Launius and Jenkins have done a good job assembling 12 well-written chapters covering every major U.S. launch vehicle - Atlas, Delta, Titan, Saturn, Shuttle, etc. - as well as the Centaur upper stage. All of the chapters (including several by Launius and Jenkins) are very thorough in their coverage, resenting a well-written chronology of the subject. Extensive notes at the end of each chapter. Highly recommended.
