An engrossing history of the Kentucky mining industry. A very factual history of the exploitation of a land and its people by large steel and mining companies. The most important revelation of this book: they took everything and left nothing to the state and its miners.

Dr. Clark was a family friend who did a great deal for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The book beautifully describles a life well spent as both a very kind man and a generous public servant.

A very good read. I'm not quite down with it, but a great book. There's no self-hype here by Couch. The authors do a great job taking a story of "small town boy makes good" into a story all of us can relate to in one way or another. I've been a Tim Couch fan ever since he came to Cleveland, and you'll enjoy reading about how he gets there. A definite must-read.

"Time on Target" Hits Mark
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-08
Most biographies about World War II participants have focused on two distinct groups of persons: those that served as high ranking military or political leaders or those who served as ordinary soldiers in the field. This follows the well-established practice of studying history from either above or below. While both of these types of studies are important and useful, those in the middle strata of a conflict can enlighten and inform on a much broader range of topics. General William R. Buster's memoir "Time on Target" is a first-rate example of this type of scholarship.
Buster recounts his personal and professional experiences from his graduation from the West Point class of 1940 to his command of a battalion as a Lieutenant Colonel. Buster was one of the first officers in the US Army to begin training with armor and mechanized artillery, and was instrumental in development of tactics and theories for use by these forces. Buster was assigned to the Second Armored Division, and served throughout North Africa, Normandy, and central Europe with this organization. With his unique positions witin the military higherarchy, Buster recounts wonderful episodes involving general officers to privates.
Buster also observes non-military functions and activities, which makes this a unique World War II narrative. He gives colorful accounts of travelling the country in his newly purchased Pontiac convertable, courting his wife-to-be Mildred, and army-base life. Buster also tells of the death of close friends and interaction with refugees and homeless families in Europe. The Postdam Conference and refugee-assistance mission are also documented by Buster.
This book is a useful tool for anyone interested in World War II. Buster relates military, social, and technical information from one of the most unique perspectives during the war. While other works may give more details or a better overall coverage of the war, few can match Buster in the description of his personal wartime actions and impressions.

Well Researched Overview of Space Launch Vehicles
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-24
Well-known aerospace experts Launius and Jenkins have done a good job assembling 12 well-written chapters covering every major U.S. launch vehicle - Atlas, Delta, Titan, Saturn, Shuttle, etc. - as well as the Centaur upper stage. All of the chapters (including several by Launius and Jenkins) are very thorough in their coverage, resenting a well-written chronology of the subject. Extensive notes at the end of each chapter. Highly recommended.

Thank you Chad. America should know this "awful truth". By the way, we in Appalachia are still holding the same protest signs that these brave people held up in this book 30 years ago.
Help us America.

A Beautiful Look at Kentucky Life!

Review Date: 2004-12-25
When I heard that my bestfriend had bought this book, I had to get my hands on it. For I had to work in the tobacco fields when I was younger. The hot blistery days and never-ending work never seemed to upset me. For there is a drive that keeps us Kentucky farm kids going during tough times. It is a dedication- a very sweet dedication. If you want to visit this beauty and get a glimpse of Kentucky life as I knew it, buy this book. Sit down with a cup of hot cocoa. Enjoy it all!

Wide-ranging survey

A solid collection of articles on various sub-topics of Tolkien's relations with myth, particularly his sources and his aim of creating a mythology. There are several very good essays on the Finnish _Kalevala_ as an influence. Tom Shippey's essay on the _Edda_ and _Kalevala_ is one of his best, and a fine example of his typical clarity of style. Several of the reprinted articles, notably Catherine Madsen's essay on natural religion and Kathleen Dubs' on Boethian philosophy, are quite thought-provoking. Andrew Lazo's essay on the Kolbitar, precursor to the Inklings, is repetitive in sections but includes a good deal of very interesting material. Also noteworthy are the papers on oaths and oath-breaking by John Holmes and on Beowulf by Alexandra Bolitineanu. All in all, a useful collection.

Daniel Boone
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-01
For folks a certain age, there is a fair amount of confusion between Daniel Boone and another American iconn, Davy Crockett, due to the late 1960s television program about Boone which starred Fess Parker (a.k.a. Davy Crockett. ) The TV folks clapped a coonskin cap on Daniel (no doubt trying to tie-in to the success of Parker's earlier series) and forever melded the two men in the mind of a generation.

Harness takes-on that issue early in the book by describing Boone's headgear.

...some frontier folks like the look of a jaunty striped tail, dangling from the back of a "coonskin" cap, but not Daniel. He generally wore a wide-brimmed felt hat.

She includes a full page illustration of Daniel with his gear, powder horn, tomahawk, buckskins britches, leggins etc. all clearly labeled. Life on the Kentucky and Missouri frontier is richly described with its need for self-reliance, the brutal Indian wars, hunting and trapping, pelt theft, and land disputes . Daniel and his family scratched out a living on the outposts of civilization and held on to that life tenaciously. At one point the Shawnee kidnapped Boone and held him so long that his wife Rebecca thought he was dead.

The fragility of human life in the wilderness is underscored by a poignant story of Daniel's brother in law, John Stewart who disappeared while hunting. His body was found years later only identifiable by his powder horn carved with the initials J.S.

I enjoy the style of Cheryl Harness's books. She provides a very high rate of information per square inch through her use of engaging artwork and text. A timeline of world events runs across the bottom of each page. I loved knowing that while Daniel was trapping for pelts in the wild, Handel was composing "Music for the Royal Fireworks." There is also an excellent list of resources, other reading, "places well worth visiting" and an index. Harness also describes the process she uses to create the pen and ink pictures through out the book.

Daniel Boone's life is the stuff of legends and this book tells his story in the context of the times with depth and detail.
