The Images of America series generally does a good job of representing America's great metropolitan centers, and the Louisville edition is no exception. From Churchill Downs to the (once) bustling downtown to train stations, local architecture, ethnic enclaves and the area's many other sites of interest, Anderson and Neary's work creates a vivid array of imagery as to the "sense" of being a Louisvillian during the first half of the last century. And by capturing Louisville's diversity -its irreproducible blend of Midwest and South, of old and new, of Victorian grandeur and industrial grit - the book presents a pleasing portrayal of this quintessential American city; it should be enjoyable to all with an interest in the history of urban America.

Timothy Ryan Yeager is a poet of immense talent. His poetry rings clear of past poet laureates of the world. His use of rhythm and rhyme can be likened to that of Shakespeare. Even if you don't like poetry, this book is amazingly interesting. Find a new love of poetry in The Maddened Poet!

This is a really well done autobiography of the son of the founder of Makers Mark. His family originally made TW Samuels whisky but sold that business. Bill is an old college friend so I can relate to this book very well. I knew his parents and can tell you that the content of his auto. is accurate. I think anyone can enjoy the way in which Bill presents the history of Makers Mark and his part in making the brand so successful over the last 30+ years. Bill is a true original in marketing the Makers Mark product/brand.

One of the very few high points of my high school career was watching the 1978-79 Highlands Bluebirds varsity basketball team play in the state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington. A big part of what I enjoyed about it was getting out of school for two days, but I also discovered that I loved the way that Kentucky puts on a basketball tournament. It's impossible not to get caught up in the excitement from the time you enter Rupp Arena and when I saw this book on the shelf in the bookstore at NKU, it all came flooding back to me. At first I would just sit and read the book right in the store when I found myself with a break between classes, but eventually I broke down and bought a copy of my own. It's an excellent book on this comparitively narrow subject, but like I said, it's one I dig out every year around the time the district tournaments start. Mr. Embry, ever consider doing an update?

Don't let its small size fool you- this little gem of a book has something for everyone.
If you are a serious student of Kentucky history you will delight in the insights offered in each of the book's chapters. The authors shed light - accented through the sepia tones of the book's rich collection of historic photographs- into the people and places that shaped Marshall County. They stay away from trite generalizations about the county and its residents as microcosms of a larger America, but there are similarities between the Kentucky life they illuminate and the background of just about every rural county in America.
For everyone else, Marshall County offers a trip into the past and engenders a nostalgic yearning to pull out the old shoeboxes filled with our own family photos. Page after page tells the story of pioneer families turned rural industrialists. The story of Marshall County becomes not so much about towns and regions but about the families, the "odd characters", and the fascinating people who gave the county its rich character. This book represents the family photo album of an entire county, shared with pride.
Take an afternoon and curl up with Marshall County. You'll come away feeling as if you've discovered a lost branch of your family tree.
