This book is similar in style, layout, and contents to Sulzer's other books. It has lots of anecdotes and human interest stories about hardscrabble lines (and pieces of bigger roads) that operated for a time in Kentucky, and then vanished. You'll find a wealth of material in here about local history and economic development in the Blue Grass State. Buy it - you'll enjoy it.

This book was given to me as a gift. I was not prepared for the story and the very eloquent talents of the author. I felt seduced. At many times, I felt as though I was part of the story, part of the group, traveling throughout Turkey, Cyprus, and Amsterdam. I took the book on vacation with me and when I got home, I immediately went to Amazon.com to see what else Hofstadter has written. Wonderful book!

Golden Doves With Silver Dots: Semiotics and Textuality in Rabbinic Tradition (Jewish Literature and Culture)

A Beacon in the midst

When Jacob Neusner compared the achievment of Jose Faur's Golden Doves with Silver Dots to Judah ha-Nasi's Mishnah (compiler of Jewish Formulas) and R. Moshe ben Maimon's Mishneh Torah (codifier of Jewish Law)he was certainly not making a hiperbole.

Though I am not an expert in rabbinics myself, I must say that R. Faur's explanation on 2nd c. rabbinic exegesis is yet the best I have seen anywhere in 20th century Jewish literature, perhaps the only one in existence ever.

It is a brief, yet an immensely dense book, that anyone who applies its features will gain important understanding of Jewish tradition.

I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand Judaism in its most pristine form. For the students of Jewish Law, it will bring brilliance to the texts they have already studied in ways they never thought before, in the very ways of the Sages who formulated the oral Law. It is a most wonderful sifting net in this world of clouded realities.

Jew or non-Jew, you got to buy it!. DR

"The Goodriches" is a scholarly book about the impact of the Goodrich family's lives and the influence they exerted, not only locally, but nationally and internationally. Events chronicled in the book are clearly the work of extensive research. Sheds light on an important period of Indiana history. A must-read for fans of well told historical accounts!

For the average citizen this can be a good book.
Most cops are " suppose ' to have these things in the patrol car.
If you think he's screwing with you ask him to go get his Criminal Law and Motor Vehicle Handbook , for his protection. Because you don't want him to make a mistake that would look bad for him in court. Cops are not your friends. Remember we have an adversarial type of justice system. They get bonus and promotions because , " you broke the law. "
Always ask what their probable cause is. If you know the law you can stand your ground.
One time in a retail store cops were called because at front door the employees became aware
that I had a sidearm. { Long story. I was complying with store policy. They then said I could come in and shop } Any way two Sheriff's Deputies show up. They asked me for my gun permit. I asked what their probable cause was ?
It ended shortly after that. There is no state law requiring me to show my permit on demand.
They knew it. But thought I didn't. This book has the laws in it. Oh if your thinking , well I just look it up on line. Yeah you can. But in.gov search engine is the pits. Besides it good to have a copy
you can easily turn to at home or in the car. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. For both sides.

Dr. Alvarez's synthesis of the literature on genocide from a sociological and criminological perspective is unprecendented. This is not only a work that will inform the academic literature, but one that should also be used to inform public policy. It is in this sense that Dr. Alvarez has not only succeeded as a scholar, but as a humanitarian as well.

Superb translation and copious notes
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-19
I read The Grand Scribe's Records vol. 7 with immense pleasure, having worked on translations of several Shiji Memoirs in the past, finally defeated by the immensity of the task and the overwhelming number of obscure historical, geographical and literary references. This is where Nienhauser and his team have excelled: their translations extend beyond the basic text to the abundant notes and commentary generated by centuries of Chinese scholarship on this important work of history. The footnotes cross-reference every name and event that appears in the text to other parts of the Shiji and to other pre-Han texts.

The Shiji or Historical Records (Records of the Historian, Grand Scribe's Records) is the most impressive work of history of its time, on par with the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and with far less speculation than Herodotus. It was a heroic attempt to recover and explain the first millenia of the Chinese world from the scattered remains of documents destroyed by the First Emperor of China. Scholars agree its influence on later Chinese historical writing is profound. The Memoirs translated in this volume are the most readable section of the work, presenting more than a hundred memorable characters in brief thematic biographies.

Nienhauser and his colleagues present a highly readable translation, but offer much more to the general reader and student by explaining obscure references to sacrifices, dating, names, official posts, customs, etc.; by discussing doubtful readings and alternate translations; by identifying place-names and locating them in Tan Qixiang's The Historical Atlas of China; and by identifying passages that have parallels in other contemporary texts. These notes, plus a table of weights and measures, an enlightening discussion of chronology, an excellent bibliography and index, make their work vastly superior to the otherwise excellent English renderings of the Shiji and Zuozhuan [Tso Chuan] by Burton Watson, or of the Zhanguoce [Intrigues of the Warring States] by Crump, or of Lu Buwei's Annals by Knoblock. Only James Legge's translations of the Chinese classics demonstrate a similar commitment to explicating the text, though without the benefit of recent scholarship and archaeological discovery. When all nine volumes are complete, this work will be a classic and an essential text in any historian's library.

[My only complaint: shame on the copy editors for missing two misspellings in the first sentence of the first memoir!]
