Co-authored by lifelong student of Indiana history George W. Geib and judicial expert Donald B. Kite Sr. (a partner with the Indianapolis law firm of Schultz & Pogue, LLP), "Federal Justice In Indiana: The History Of The United States District Court For The Southern District Of Indiana" is a specialized and superbly written history of Southern Indiana's court system from its earliest days as a territorial court to the District Court's current composition. Selections of major cases are incorporated to illustrate the court's evolution (as well as its humanity) making "Federal Justice In Indiana" a unique and impressive resource for law students, history buffs, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in American judicial history. Enhanced with occasional black-and-white photographs, "Federal Justice In Indiana" could well serve as a template for other regional court histories and is very highly recommended for academic and community library Indiana History collection, as well as academic library American Judicial History reference shelves.

Fascinating & well written. Good scholarship but it's *not* dry reading, it's very interesting. The first half of the book focuses on pre-Christianity, and the second half on the Christian era. This study goes deeper than a wishful look back at goddess religions. I had it recommended to me by a history professor, he said it was excellent. He was right. It turned out to be great, and I should have bought a copy before it went out of print! It's one of the best studies of it's kind.

The Roots of Classic Feminism

A good place to start to update your neglected feminist education, this collection of essays by well-known feminist thinkers affords a complete range of feminist theory and thought. It is a consciousness-raising read, as well as a good, organized way to understand lines of thought that are popularly represented only by media sound bites. While everyone may not agree with the opinions expressed, it would be in error to in any way label them ignorant opinions. Some of the essays are difficult to wade through, since they originated in scholarly journals and collections and contain a plethora of technical terms, many of which are the exclusive property of the discipline represented.

A wonderful and thoughtful analysis of science fiction written by women and about women. While I disagreed with some of her conclusions, I found th book well researched and well written. A must read source for anyone studying women's writing or science fiction as literature.

Strongly recommended for both academic and community library American History and American Biography collections, "Fighting For Equality: A Life Of May Wright Sewall" by author and historian Ray E. Boomhower is the fascinating story of a pioneer advocate for women's rights. May Wright Sewall was an accomplished educator and peace activist who worked tirelessly on behalf of rights for women in the United States and around the world. She advocated national suffrage along with her late 19th and early 20th century contemporaries such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. May Wright Sewall additionally brought national and international attention to the women's rights movement through her involvement with the American national Council of Women and the International Council of Women. She also helped establish the Girls' Classical School in Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Woman's Club, the Contemporary Club, the Art Association of Indianapolis (which was to evolve into the Indianapolis Museum of Art), and the Indianapolis Propylaium. She served as a delegate on automaker Henry Ford's failed Peace Trip in 1915, shocked her friends by releasing "Neither Dead nor Sleeping" in which she revealed her communications with her deceased husband. The book was published a few months before her death in 1920. "Fighting For Equality" is a compelling read, a welcome contribution to the growing library of information on and about the women's suffrage movement, and a fitting memorial to a complex and accomplished woman of her times.

I own nearly every book written on Psycho -- but this one took me years to find. It's a virtual monograph -- less than 90 pages, with no art! But a very insightful piece of work about this exceptionally vital American masterpiece. Detailed scene by scene analysis; well worthwhile for Psycho-philes like me.

A linguistic excursion...

This book is an example of how to write a text explaining English usage. It is short; it is humorous; it is to the point. It doesn't attempt to recover old ground but susinctly describes the 5 clocks, or registers, or levels, or what have you, that we, as speakers of the English language, use on a regualr basis. Miss Fidditch would be proud. I first encountered Mr. Joos's book as a text for an undergraduate studies linguistics class. It's held a place of honor on my well used bookshelf ever since.

Amusing private investigator tale
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-01
Review Date: 2004-11-01
In Indianapolis, several years ago Albert Samson lost his private investigative license, but his attorney gets him reinstated; within a few hours, he has two clients. Schoolyard basketball guru Joe Ellison asks Albert to look gratis into vandalism at a nearby African-American church. Attorney Christopher Holloway hires him for an exorbitant fee to help his law firm in their defense of Ronnie Williger, suspected rapist and serial killer. Albert also wants to know what is bothering his childhood buddy Captain Jerry Miller, who arrested Ronnie and cost Albert his sleuthing license. Finally his adult daughter Sam wants him to find her missing mother.
His cases are not straight forward. A stakeout by an unknown person near the church stops a dangerous inferno from occurring. Williger defense team lead attorney Karl Benton expects Albert to find dirt on Jerry so that they can paint a motive of a bad cop needing money framing their client while sharing a finder's fee with a crony. As Albert accompanied at times by neon sign maker Mary investigates, the cases intersect with a killer targeting the sleuth and his family members and new girlfriend.
Readers will appreciate this amusing private investigator tale starring a fabulous fallen sleuth getting a second chance encouraged by the female breads that surround him as the sandwich generation. Sam and Albert's mom are terrific as they will do anything to help their champion back on his feet. Quite contrary Mary brings humor and intelligence with questions and comments that shake Albert to the core. The investigations are cleverly designed as Albert traverses the mean streets of Indianapolis in what will be an EYE OPENER for anyone who has not read Michael Z. Lewin before.
