Hawaii Books

This book was first privately printed in 1923 by Cross-Roads Studios in Honolulu. It is a fabulous collection of poems devoted to Hawaii as seen through the eyes of a visitor. Even non-poetry readers will enjoy the simply written verse which evokes a time and place which some think is lost forever. I have been looking for this book for a while. I had read a library copy of it but want my own copy for some reaearch I am doing on the impact of the Hawaiians in the PNW. The book was easily ordered, and on my doorstep within a few days!

Although this book was hard to read at times, I feel like I am a better person for having read it. Father Damien is truely a remarkable individual and his Christlike devotion to the lepers of Hawaii is what made this book so compelling for me. I loved reading about this wonderful,humble man. He loved these people with all his heart and soul. He absolutely changed everything for them, and he not only built churches for them with his bare hands, but he also was their doctor their priest and their friend. When no one would go to the lepers and give them the just the bare necissities of life, Father Damien was a willing and humble servant. I loved this book and know you will come away from reading it, amazed as I was at what this great man accomplished in his short life.

A collection of warm and enthusiastic words of wisdom from 40 residents of Hawaii. Each inspiring story is told in the first-person, usually in a uniquely Hawaiian form of "pidgin" English and accompanied by one or more wonderful black and white photos of the speaker. The individuals you will meet are "ordinary people" with extraordinary character and strength; people of widely differing life experiences and yet each displays a passion for life and an inner peace which is best described as the Aloha spirit.

As a native of this state, I've scoured all the California travel titles offered at local bookstores. Let's Go is hands-down the most useful and accurate one I've seen. It doesn't just list the chain motels in random towns across the state; it offers the best out-of-the-way finds and offers clear, valuable opinions on how best to spend your travel dollars. This year's editor, Nitin Shah, has done a terrific job revamping and updating coverage. Plus, the 2003 guide, in addition to being WAY more visually appealing, offers a ton of new editorial features and listings at all price ranges. Put down that Lonely Planet--Let's Go is THE way to go to California!

I'm collecting Shin books, and this one is really unique. If you are interested in classic Shin.....from a females practitioners point of view, then this is the book for you!

You won't find much new stuff, nor will you find much "deep, mysterious" stuff, but you WILL see the role of women in Shin.

First, this book is chocked full of Bruce Roberts' beautiful photographs of the lighthouses in this region. The photographs are nothing less than SPECTACULAR! Combined with the revised and updated information on each makes this regional lighthouse guide a requirement you won't want to be without whether you're visiting the region or a life-long resident. The text contains full, rich descriptions of each lighthouse, too.

I have many lighthouse books and all of Bruce Roberts' and Ray Jones' regional guides. I've read them all and used most of them while traveling. I've found them to be first rate, an excellent choice for people who want everything lighthouse between two covers. A joy to look at and informative to read.

ALOHA Where You Like Go?: From Survival to Satisfaction by Honolulu Taxi

Anyone who loves Honolulu - or would like to - should read this sweet, funny little memoir of a "local girl" whose family represents the history of 20th century Hawaii (and modern Korea!). Accessible and valuable. Glenda's world travels as a young girl are a wonderful arm-chair journey. See her other book(s) as well!
