"Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) became the first female painter in America to win unanimous respect from both critics and the public. She carried the powerful simplicity of the prairie with her throughout her career, always striving to capture the essence of a subject, both in form and in spirit.

"While visiting friends in Taos, New Mexico, in 1929, O'Keeffe fell in love with the beauty of the land. Eventually she moved to the state and devoted her energy to portraying the color and mystery of the south-western mountains and desert.

"Producing more than 2,000 paintings in her lifetime, Georgia O'Keeffe left a legacy of artistic vision that will forever be treasured. The twenty paintings presented in this calendar pay tribute to the timeless elegance of her work.

"112 page, spiral-bound weekly engagement calendar with 20 full-color reproductions and clear plastic covers. Size: 6 5/8 by 8". Calendar features 53 weekly grids, 12 full-page monthly grids, and double-page spreads of yearly grids for 2006 and 2007. Includes international holidays, calling codes, time differences, personal information page, and pages for notes. ISBN 0-7649-3048-6. Click on the small picture to see an inside page. "American painter Georgia O'Keeffe (1887- 1986) was renowned for her close-up paintings of flowers and her images of the American Southwest, works of elegant simplicity that capture the essence of her subject. Also known for her original approach to her art and her independent spirit, she preferred not to limit her paintings by interpreting them, commenting, 'I think I'd rather let the painting work for itself than help it with the word.' Presented here are thirty eloquent paintings by one of the most revered and inventive American artists. 30 full-color reproductions.

"Pomegranate's books of postcards contain thirty top-quality reproductions bound together in a handy collection. Easy to remove and produced on heavy card stock, these stunning postcards are a delight to the sender and receiver. Note: postcards are oversized and may require additional postage. 28 Watercolors

Georgia O'Keeffe always said that she was impatient with visual clutter; that she wanted to get rid of details that got in the way of real meanings; and that abstract painting could deal with concepts, emotions, and ideas. The GEORGIA O'KEEFFE: CANYON SUITE watercolors are in fact among the earliest U.S. abstract art painted directly from nature. They include abstract images of natural phenomena, such as "Abstraction, Black and Blue," with lightning bolts and rain sheets through darkened sky and ground, "First Light on the Plains," with light haloing through the fuchsia and indigo night, "Gray Abstraction (Train/Desert)," with former motion stilled in trails against the sky, and "Light Coming on the Plains," with Japanese brushed color tones dragged spectacularly down by gravity and water; recognizable subject matter, such as "Red House/Fence & Door" and her rare "Standing Nude," with the body invaded by the background colors and therefore like one of Auguste Rodin's blurred watercolor nudes; and traditional landscapes, such as "Blue Hills," "Dark Mesa," and "Purple Mountain." Editor Barbara J. Bloemink's text gives helpful background to understanding the artist and the color plates, and to reading Benita Eisler's O'KEEFFE AND STIEGLITZ and Roxana Robinson's GEORGIA O'KEEFFE. The same interest in colors and shapes, but differently treated, shows through FRIDA KAHLO's art, particularly in the books by Hayden Herrera, Raquel Tibol, and Martha Zamora.

I used this guidebook recently for a brief visit to Georgia. It guided me to Okefeenokee swamp park, the town of Brunswick, and the Ocmulgee National Monument. I will use the guide again on my next trip.

The guidebook divides Georgia into seven regions and lists interesting places to stay, old-time restaurants, museums and art galleries, annual events, and assorted trivia. Sidebars recount tidbits of Georgia history and contain delectable recipes for regional dishes such as Brunswick stew and seafood. This guidebook is light and small and well-organized and all you need to find your way to interesting spots, especially if you're the sort of person who's allergic to shopping malls and cooker-cutter hotels and restaurants

In Georgetown, Yuppie friends, attorneys Winston Andrew Whittaker IV and Colby Wharton, enjoy their upscale singles life especially the women. However, they also like betting one another with weird stakes. Colby bets Win that he cannot survive living the "simple life" in Magnolia Bluffs, Georgia, for one month; the stipulation being only $200 in cash and no car credit cards. Win cannot resist the challenge accepts the wager. If he wins he makes partner.

In Magnolia Bluffs, Win obtains work as a shampoo girl at Kendrick "Kenni" McAllister's salon, Permanently Yours. As they work together, they fall in love. However, to win his beloved, Win must tell her the truth about himself; he fears his deception will destroy their relationship once he reveals who he is.

GEORGIA ON HIS MIND is a very humorous contemporary romance starring a male who seems like a fish out of sea when he invades the south and the woman who educates him that there is life outside the beltway. The story line is fast-paced even on the Connector as readers will laugh with the antics of the townsfolk who help Kenni educate Win.

We always read or hear about the struggles of Blacks in the south. And now witht the effects of just how strong "racism" still exists in America, I found this book to be on point about how racism is not just a race problem its a personal one that crosses over from inter-racial prejudice. It's my hope Ms. Vay continues to write such stirring stories about the myths of miscegenation in the south.

Most Authoritative Book on Topic

This is a second edition of David J. Maleski's thorough analysis of Georgia Products Liability, published by The Harrison Company in Norcross, GA.

David J. Maleski is Professor of Law at Georgia State University.

From the introduction: "Products liability is a very important specialty of tort law. One reason for its significance is the sheer volume of products liability lawsuits. Over 20 million products-related injuries occur in the United States every year, resulting in more than a million lawsuits annually. Nationally, an average award for successful products liability lawsuits exceeds $100,000.

"Products liability law continues to undergo very rapid doctrinal change, despite a current economic climate that calls for product liability 'reform.' The wisdom of the march towards 'absolute' products liability is severely questioned by those who contend that our overly litigious nature stifles technological innovation and drives the price of products far above their manufacturing cost. The study of products liability law is truly the study of how the United States has responded to the rapid explosion of products technology. Along with its insatiable desire for new and exciting products, the consuming public now expects greater corporate responsibility. The recent trends towards strict products liability and reduced burdens of proof are consistent with the modern consumer rights movement and the corresponding demise of the special privileges and immunities once enjoyed by corporate and industrial America..."

Finally, the book is meant to succeed the popular "Eldridge's Georgia Products Liability", but "has a somewhat different focus from its predecessor. It is written to educate the general practitioner, and additionally, it is written for the aspiring Georgia products liability specialist, whether he or she is currently a practioner or a law student." The Fabulous Mr. B

Mr. Beckum's second greatest love, after his wife, was the evolution of the railroad. An excellent photographer, he documented his love of trains and depots long before they were appreciated by mainstream America. This album is one of several anthologies that he authored. This work, like his others, is a work of love.

Another work of love was Mr. Beckum's purchase of the train depot in Thomson, Georgia. The restored depot was dontated to the City of Thomson and is available to the public. Thank you Mr. B! We miss you, and your love for all things railroad and Thomson. -Kelly Evans
