Pomerantz hit the high water mark of urban histories by providing an intimate picture of the emergence of the South's premier inter-racial city, Atlanta, from the standpoint of the two families---one once slave and the other slave owner---who helped to shape its progressive destiny.

As a recent transplant to the city of Atlanta, I didn't know much about Atlanta's history. And as an African American woman with grandparents who left the South in search of bigger opportunities in the North, I was more aware of the racism than I was of how and who ushered in the social and economic change that created more opportunities for my generation. The book is extremely well written and once I started I couldn't put it down. This is great way to learn about history. Anyone interested in Atlanta's history in particular and American history in general should read this book!!!!!!

This book not only is about two families but also about how those two families influenced and built one of the great metropolises of America. Greatly narrated and beautifully told.

I've read several of Gary's books and found this one to be an amazing work of not only scholarship and very detailed research but it was also very readable. Some people may be put off by the sheer size of the book but once I was hooked (it took a few pages), I really couldn't put it down until I was done.

Luckily, I was on a cruise and quite a few sea days to lie back in the sun and savour this wonderful book.

I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone interest in how the South was transformed (both intentionally and unintentionally) by a small number of people with not only immense vision but also immense bravery and a sense of justice.

I am a native Georgian and raised in Metro Atlanta. This book opened my understanding of how, what, when and who made this city and why our state is so political about everything. Unfortunately, the race factor will always play a role in how we view and operate the local and state governments. This book just makes it clearer for anyone who works, lives and does business in Georgia. All Georgia history teachers should read this book. It would make Georgia history so much better for 8th graders and make them think. This is a must for reference material.

I discovered this book in high school back in the '70's and have reread it many times over the years. It is funny, moving, beautifully written, I believe the best American novel I've ever read. I was so enamored, I wrote the author, asking him tips on how to be a writer. He wrote me back a few fierce letters, passionate about his work and writing and writers. I actually had the guts to send him a piece of my own work, which he agreed to read. He savaged it, and that was devastating, but, over time, I found his advice to be 100% correct: be brave; dig deep into yourself and learn to listen to the writer who you are. What I've found baffling over these many years since the book was published (in 1974), was that this fine writer, a protege of the the wonderful writer Betty Smith ("A Tree Grows In Brooklyn) has never written a second book. What a terrible loss for us all.

Like another reviewer, I've had this book for years but never got around to actually reading it. But when I did, I couldn't believe I had let this sit on my shelf untouched! Excellent. And yes, it's right up there with the other classics like Tom Sawyer, To Kill A Mockingbird etc. Perfect for a rainy afternoon when you can curl up in bed and enjoy it.

"A Cry of Angels", which I have reread a few times, is probably one of the best books I have ever read. I rate it up there with "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Secret of Santa Vittoria", and "The Milagro Beanfield War", all of which I consider classics.

This story of a Southern boy, his friends and relations, is immaculately drawn and very endearing. With each read the book retains its magic and charm and I can finally replace my old beat up paperback with this newly reissued edition.

Until this new edition, the book had been out of print for years. Fortunately readers will now be able to rediscover this wonderful secret classic. Unfortunately Jeff Fields has never written another novel, which is a great loss for anyone who loves great literature and a great story.

I knew Jeff Fields when he worked as a producer at a local television station in Jacksonville, Florida, and read the book reluctantly and only out of courtesy, not imagining that I was about to discover one of the great books of my life. Like most of the earlier reviewers I cannot understand why this book has not become a mega hit best seller. Jeff went to Hollywood as a script writer for the production of a movie about his book. Things did not go well with the producers when Jeff refused to change the story to suit them; he resigned and the movie was never completed as far as I know. Too bad, all someone has to do is follow the book EXACTLY and they will have an academy award contender. I have not seen Jeff since about 1985? and don't know if he continues to write. In an case, don't fail to buy this book!

A freind who is an avid reader repeatedly spoke about this book. She would not lend out her copy because the book was out of print. Finally and thankfully, it has been reprinted. I agree that it should be required reading for high school. There is so much substance; history, beautiful writing,and of course humor that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. In my opinion, there are too many coming-of-age books but it all depends on how one grows up.

This is the only yoga book I have ever been able to read and do the exercises. Raquel Welch is amazing. I grew up with her yoga. My mom did it every day. There are some good diet ideas in there as well. I've learned a lot from her book.

This is a fantastic book with the Bikram yoga sequence, presented in a much more clear, easy to follow way (step by step), unlike Bikram's book which is essentially useless for home exercisers, since it has only one photo for each pose with the finished move, without showing how to get there.

Raquel Welch has surprisingly good form. This book is a must have for yoga lovers who dislike endless sun salutations - not a single one here! highly recommended!

I purchased this book back in 1984 and have never found another yoga book with as much detailed written and visual instruction. The next best thing to Raquel's book is taking a class with an experienced instructor. In her book there is a diagram, "A Chiropractic View of the Spine," which explains what areas of the spine effect certain aspects of your health. My favorite part of the book is the "Benefits." Under each pose is a benefit section which tells what that position does for the body and which conditions it can help to relieve.... I have yet to find this information in another yoga or pilates book. After the pose, there is an "Extra Help" section that is really beneficial to newbys. Every detail is covered in her instruction. Would love to see this on DVD(have the video and love it). Bought a second book because the pages are coming out of my original one. The poses in her book are more advanced than in many of the other yoga books. Not necessarily a lot harder, but more bang for your buck.

I've been practicing the yoga in Raquel's book since I was in junior high. When I started going to yoga class, instructors were impressed with my "beginner" yoga. Altho I have loved many of my yoga classes, I've longed for a class that features the same balance of postures that Raquel demonstrates.

I recently moved to California and tried Bikram yoga. I surprised to find it is the exact same sequence! I couldn't take the heat, so I'm back at home with Raquel. Now if only I could find a class that had the same postures sans heat!

The book is great in that it details the benefits of each posture and the specific steps and breathe within each posture. Each posture is followed by an explanation of common challenges.

I've purchased many yoga books over the years. Raquel's book and Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati are the best that I've found.

I bought this book when I was in college in 1987!! The poses are difficult, but Ms. Welch's instruction, and the excellent, un-retouched photos are very easy to follow. The food-combining section is simple to learn and gives immediate results. After doing both the yoga and eating plan for several years, I was in the best shape and lowest weight of my life. Now, nearly 20 years later, I plan to go back to my "old friend" to take off baby weight and get back in shape. I've never found a better book or VHS tape on Bikram yoga.

The title is what initially caught my attention, and I was impressed with the quality of writing exhibited by the author, Ed Williams. The humor and sarcasm displayed in this book hovers steadily on a tightrope between earthiness and family-friendly aw-shucks hilarity.

One of the most amusing and beautifully crafted stories in this collection is entitled `Rasslin' and Riskin' (Our Asses)' because that's precisely what the author and his 60+ college buddies do one fine Tuesday evening. As Mr. Williams writes: "We knew that the Macon pro wrestling crowd (mostly rural country folks-some came from counties miles away just to see it) didn't take kindly to people cheering for the bad guys. We knew if we did this we'd piss a lot of people off." And Williams skillfully narrates and quotes a lot of comical dialogue from his wild, wild adventures that he and his classmates experienced that night in the Coliseum.

The varied lengths of the pieces from vignettes to full out tales such as the one mentioned above, allow the person who reads this book to really get a feel of what life in central Georgia is like. A loving ode to his grandfather, Ed Sr., who in the chapter quote is succinctly described by his son: "His ass was wilder than yours and mine put together," along with the insightful and fun chapters, `Let's Be Honest About Little League' and `Meetin' BTO' demonstrate Mr. Ed Williams III's innate storytelling abilities.

The book encompasses the lives of Ed Sr., Ed Jr., and the brotherhood, whose antics are so crazy that it's impossible to keep a straight face.
I particularly enjoyed the stories, 'Snake in the Cobs,' and 'Ed Sr.,' where Frank and Ed Sr. devise a plan to beat the crap out of Santa Claus. Overall the whole book was hysterically funny, unpredictable, and well thought out.
I must admit this is the first time a book has ever made me belly roar with laughter. In fact at one point the tears were streaming down my face so badly, that I couldn't even see the words.
The characters are likable, well developed, and believable. The author portrayed his family and friend's situations so wonderfully, that he really gave his reader a glimpse into the actual scenarios, as if going back in time. Ed Williams has an uncanny way of drawing his reader into the story - meticulously, and with flair - making this book a real page-turner.
"Rough as a Cob" is a wonderful example of family life and the human condition. It is a truly incredible book, and I highly recommend it.
I hope that if Ed is ever in Canada to visit BTO, that he'll personally sign my books.

I won an autographed copy this book in a unique essay contest. I honestly didn't know what to expect when I started reading it. Funny and hilarious are mere words that simply don't do this book justice. I literally laughed until tears were running from my eyes. Ed Williams can spin a tale like no other. Anyone who picks up this book and fails to find a master story teller spinning tales of a simpler life in a simpler time has no sense of humor. Williams has the ability to reach out and take the reader back to a simpler time of nostalgia and humor.

More importantly than the humor is the obvious love, repsect and sincere admiration that Ed Williams has for his father and family. Wiliams writes a loving tribute to his father told with incredible humor and appreciation for a simpler time in life when outhouses were "in" and corn cobs had a unique and imagintive function.

Rough as a Cob is a must read and a book I will cherish and continue to enjoy over and over again.

In Rough As A Cob, Ed Williams' second collection of essays, I found myself laughing out loud. I was intrigued from the beginning chapter of "On Being Southern" to Chapter 10 "Meeting BTO."

I especially enjoyed the stories of Ed's family and I loved hearing about what Ed Jr. and Ed Sr. had to say. The down home stories brought me endless smiles, particularly Chapter 3 "Snake in the Cobs." Ed's love for and admiration of his family is apparent through his stories. I have to say I was amazed at how well written this story was written. Also the stories and characters were true to life and the images made me feel like I was right there - in the story, witnessing every experience, first-hand. I have to admit feeling pity for Charlie Pounds when Ed Sr. tells him "Charlie, you are too damn ugly." But in essence it is this type of pure honesty that is missing from today's society. I realized we need people like Ed Sr., who tell it like it is, with no fabrications. I laughed endlessly at Ed Sr. and Frank attempting and succeeding at beating up on Santa for being a greedy bastard. I felt the loss when Ed Sr.'s friend, Wig passed away. That's how real this story is.

If you only read one book this year - read Rough As A Cob, you won't be let down.

This book provides stories that are somewhat entertaining about the life of Ed Sr., Ed Jr. and Ed III. Somehow, visions of Ed, Edd and Eddy from the Cartoon Network come to mind. Anyway, we are provided the disturbing life of these three while the author presses hard for the laugh that is an occasional chuckle at most.

Let's be honest. Is a plan to gang up on Santa Claus really considered funny? That is the level of humor we are given from the book.(...) A nice try that falls a few inches short of its goal.

Most health books have made me suffer through chapters of mush in order to learn what could have been written in a magazine article. This book was different. This book's 300+ pages is a cornucopia of facts about how our bodies work and how they can last longer. A few pages in Chapter three slowed me down somewhat, but otherwise the book is concise and it provided a lot of new knowledge. I now know more about the republic of Georgia, cholesterol, cells, cancer, diabetes, fat people, intestines, diabetes, free radicals, inflammation, how we age, and how brains get screwed up than anyone else on the block.

This is a very enjoyable book to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their health or keep the good health they have. It's one of the most interesting health books I've ever read.

You can't make this stuff up! Or can you? I laughed until I had tears running down my face and my stomach hurt. Richardson has captured southern humor or any kind of humor at that! Reading this book made my day better and thankful that someone like her can find the good in just about anything.

An entertaining and cute astrology book for teens. Easy to understand and has fun facts about each of the signs. It also has some info about each rising sign, which if you don't know it, you can't figure it out from the book (it comes out wrong), but it is easy to find out on the internet. It even has a little about Chinese astrology and numerology. A great starter for teens and pre-teens who are interested in astrology.

I got this book for my birthday and think it is totally great! I'm learning about astrology & it's cool! My friends and me read it at lunch & use it to figure out which boys we're good with. I really recommend this book and think it's great.

It is a great book, answering everything an owner has to know for an African Grey parrot.

This little book is packed with information about how to care for, and be a good companion to, the incredibly intelligent African Grey parrot. It's a very good how-to with lots of advice and information - and more importantly, for those considering bringing one of these amazing birds into their families, it provides a good synopsis about the nature of the lifetime commitment that comes with that decision.

So please - if you're a new Grey owner, or just thinking about buying one, pick up this book. You'll be glad you did.

Very good Book

I recently read Maggie's book and was very delighted with it. I have never owned a bird, but have always been fascinated by them. This book really put some things in perspective for a complete novice on the nature of these birds. I think it is a very good guide for those of us who know absolutely nothing about them but would like to. Maggie was recently a guest on our online radio show and it was wonderful to hear her birds talking in the background as we spoke and listen to her share her complete love of and admiration for these wonderful birds.

This book has beautiful photography to go along with Maggie's simple to understand and implement writing in this book and I highly recommend it.

I'm dead serious. Grab this book before it is truly gone...Susan Powter speaks up from personal experience and so am I.

I loved this book. Susan gets right to the point and explains fat and sugar and more including the way to catch the tricks on food labels. She also includes recipes to help you become lean light and healthy. I read this book and liked it. I didn't listen though!

Our building has a bin in the laundry room where people put things that they don't want anymore, in case someone else in the building would like to have them. That's where I found "Food" by Susan Powter. As someone who is sick to death of "fad diets" and believes that carbs convert to starch, then to sugar, then to fat, I didn't hold out much hope for the book. But it surprised me. I absolutely *love* this book, but am reading it very slowly, one small section at a time. It's a bit overwhelming to take in all at once because Ms. Powter is such a powerful speaker, but she speaks good, common sense and has an uncanny knack for knowing what you're thinking, and saying so. I find her style delightful, her research & references sound, the medical information challenging (who knew how many different kinds of fats there are, and what they are?), and her sense of humor refreshing. I like the way she backs up her statements, I liked finding out that I'm not the only one who has qualms about eating animal products. Although I'm not getting radical or turning vegan or anything, I can now see where the fats come from, exactly how much protein we *really* need and where we can get it, exactly what is supposed to be so great about dairy, what it has to offer, and where *else* I can get that. I'm drinking water for the first time in my life, taking vitamins, and most importantly, reading labels, in the store, and teaching my sons how to do so also. We are all implementing her ideas, with good results, slimming down and feeling more energetic for the first time since I was disabled ten years ago. By the time I am finished with this book, and its recipies, and everything else I plan to do with the next book (which I've already ordered), who knows? Might get those Gwen Stefani abs yet, and just in time for summer too...ahh...thank you, Susan, for showing me how to get rid of the flab and eat right, feed my kids healthy, whole foods, cut the garbage out of my diet and take control of my kitchen. I hope this book does the same for others, but my advice is to be patient with it. Take your time, don't go gonzo making huge sudden changes. It is written to cover three phases of changing your diet, so take it slow. Baby steps. Do that, and it will work for you. The best thing about it is that you learn to eat more, not less. You can eat as much as you want, whenever you like. It is *what you eat* that the book deals with, and if you're thinking that it's a bland, yucky diet, no way. The recipies are absolutely delicious with next to no fat, and there are a lot of recipies in there. Tons. And kids like them too. If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book, I'd have to say go for it, and take it seriously. It has more benefits than I can possibly list here, so enough said. See for yourself!
