I read it just after it was published and I think it's one of the best books to prepare for CISSP exam. I can't say it's the only study source to pass the exam, but definitely it was very helpful.

A Searing Challenge to the Intellect and the Spirit
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-02
David Keplinger writes with disarmingly apparent simplicity, drawing on observations of nature's creation, experiences, history, change, and death and from these seemingly quick glances he creates moments of halting beauty so absent form many other poets' works. Some would say he is 'accessible' which to this reader is akin to greeting card fluff.

Keplinger is a tough poet, demanding the reader's complete attention to the spare lines as well as to the inchoate threads of new thoughts consummately molded into experiences dependent on the reader's own history. He describes the animate and inanimate in ways as strange and beautiful as they are fearful.

Spending time with this collection of fragile yet steely poems sharpens our perception of the world, our pre-judged responses to that world, and to the possibilities of the magic of language incorporating intransigence. Grady Harp, May 05

Any Coloradan, and especially any Boulderite, who climbs will find this book interesting. It is intended for a specific audience, and if you fit that audience, the book delivers and I highly recommend it; if you don't climb, or haven't heard of Layton Kor, or don't live in Colorado, then this book would be painfully boring. The book also gave me ideas of where to climb outside of the Boulder area, though there is a heavy emphasis on both Eldorado and Boulder canyons. You can skip around through the various sections pretty easily.

David Milofsky's COLOR OF LAW is a wonderful, moving portrait...
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-17
David Milofsky's COLOR OF LAW is a wonderful, moving portrait of a 1959 racially motivated murder and a ground breaking Civil Rights trial that occurs 20 years later. Milofsky explores the limits of the legal system and creates vivid, compelling characters whose lives intersect in unexpected and powerful ways.
The novel takes place in Milwaukee and opens with the murder of a young black man, Jimmmy Norman, who has been stopped for a routine traffic violation. John Rogan, a police officer, claims that he shot Norman in self-defense. A second policeman, a witness to the murder, Tommy Paley, concurs with Rogan's story. Though the community is outraged by the murder, the case soon fades from public consciousness after the two officers are expelled from the police force. But 20 years later, a broken Tommy Paley telephones a newspaper reporter, Bob Joseph, and says that his account of the killing years ago was a lie.
The novel has a wonderful narrative sweep; Milofsky layers plot and character, creating a textured, rich world. The reader learns about politics and life in Milwaukee; the city is a charcter in its own right. We meet a mayoral candidate, the intellectual Andy Hedig, who is running against incumbent Emil Mueller. The book follows the lives of the candidates, of the police officers, of Jimmy Norman's sister, the proud, angry Oliva Brown who is intent on seeking justice on behalf of her dead brother. We meet Hedig's wife, Sarah, and watch as the reporter, Bob Joseph, becomes drawn to her. The novel portrays Charlie Simon, the lawyer representing Olivia Brown. He believes there may have been official complicity to conceal the murder, and he seeks justice on behalf of Jimmy but also wants to win the trial for the sake of victory alone. The trial itself is a gripping courtroom drama which changes the lives of many of the characters. The novel's end surprises with its twists of plot.
The book is tough and tender, beautifully described. With clear, elegant prose and profound observations about life, David Milofsky weaves a story that captures the heart of a search for justice and a search for love, a tale that lingers long after the novel ends.

A beautiful state

Review Date: 2004-06-27
Colorado is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful states of the United States. But there's more to it than just snow-capped mountains. This book explores the complexities of Colorado's landscape and economy.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Colorado" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. And this edition is loaded with several beautiful photographs.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators.

Who knew? From an embarrassed native.

Yep, that's right. A Colorado native and I must say, I'm really embarrassed about what I didn't know about my state. This is a fantastic book and should be required reading for every student in the state.

The other great thing about the book is it gives you great ideas for vacations in Colorado. No need to spend a lot of cash on airfare to somewhere else. Forget skiing. Come see the "hidden" treasures that Colorado has to offer. But you'll only discover them if you get the book.

People putting out travel books today should take a lesson from this guy's series. Unlike lesser picture books, the "A picture Book to Remember her by" series is CHOCK FULL OF PICTURES! I've got several in this series including the one for Chicago and I find it really makes you feel like you've been there. If it's the pictures of a place you are after in a travel book, this is the way to go.

I wish there were more!
