Mixtec Transnational Identity examines in detail the emergence of transnational indigenous organizations and communities throughout the Mexico-U.S. border area. Written with scholarly attention to detail by professor- researcher Laura Velasco Ortiz, Mixtec Transnational Identity covers such topics as the political construction of the transnational ethnic community, boundaries of gender and ethnicity within the community, and how policies of migration interplay with labor markets. Extensively researched and supported with both statistics and anecdotes, Mixtec Transnational Identity is a valuable resource for better understanding the political, ethnic, and sociological fabric of transnational communities and their interplay with America and Mexico as a whole.

The foundation of US Foreign relations until George W Bush

Thomas Jefferson was a genius. When he was asked what should be the guiding influence in American Foreign Policy, he enunciated the first usage of the Prime Directive. If US Presidents had stuck to that policy consistently, and applied it also to the US, I can't help but believe that the world would be a more prosperous and peaceful place today. The policy, stated by President Monroe and, therefore, referred to as the Monroe Doctrine, is very clearly explained by Dr. Dozer, a brilliant diplomat and writer.

Mary Irish separates all the different plant groups of the southwest, such as Cactii, Perennials, Annuals, Bulbs, Vegetables, etc, and then writes a 12-month calendar for each subject. It is very handy to look up the particular month in question to see what needs to be done, or to get information on planting during the colder months. She talks about planting, watering, fertilizing, possible pests, pruning, and other helpful hints for each group. A very informative book for anyone in the Arizona southwest.

Professor Emeritus of Humanities Michael G. Sundell presents Mosaics in the Eternal City, a scholarly portrait of Rome between 400 and 1300 as gathered through study of the major works of its monumental public visual art that have survived: the mosaics in the apses, on the arches, and on the walls of eight churches. Drawing on recent findings in archaeology, art history, and the history of religion, Mosaics in the Eternal City explores the influence of pagan, Jewish, and Christian traditions on civic identity and public art, as well as the repercussions of religious and political conflicts and the demographic shifts in Rome over time. Written to be accessible to the informed general reader as well as the specialist, Mosaics in the Eternal City is enhanced with sixty-five color and six black-and-white illustrations, including maps, plans, archival drawings, and photographs of architectural and urban sites. A welcome addition to art history shelves.

This is a delightful book filled with delicious recipes from the Inn at 410 B&B in Arizona. The dishes use easily found ingredients and most are easy to make. It is printed in black & white with a few illustrations.

The book starts with baking tips including tips on lowering fat. Recipes include beverages, fruits, breakfasts, muffins, breads, spreads, scones, cookies & desserts. Sample menus are also given.

My favorite recipes are the blintz soufflé with blueberry sauce & Parmesan herb muffins. I also enjoyed the oatmeal pancakes, hash brown pie, tropical scones, raspberry crème anglaise & cinnamon kiss cookies.

Fluid narratives and scientific passion
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-05
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my father-in-law, who very conscientiously purchased the book from a locally-owned, independent bookseller. What a delightful book it is! My husband and I read it together, and we very much enjoyed every page. Bowers writes beautifully, fluidly and with wonderfully astute scientific insight. It is always a pleasure to read the writings of a scientist so inspired by her work that she shares her passion with laypeople; scientific passion is nothing less than infectious, regardless of the discipline. Bowers' essays are accessible, insightful prose that leave the reader hungry for more. A pure delight to read.

Superb first person account of the Southwest, 1890's-1920's mining

This book tells the story of an American mining engineer and mine developer in northern Mexico from the 1890's to the 1920's, with the last entry in 1932. This is a true story, which makes it all the more remarkable. Morris Parker wins the first mine that he owns himself in a poker game in Chihuahua Mexico. That and many other colorful stories fill the book. He also knew Pancho Villa, and counted him a friend. Better than movies. I could not put this book down, but read it through over the course of a week. Highly recommended if you have any interest in the northern Mexico, Southwest U.S. region, the time, or in mining history.

Another opportunity arose this weekend to read a book I couldn't put down. Don't you just love when that happens? In this case, the book was MY FATHER'S SON by Terri Fields.

Kevin Windor's world is sent spinning off its axis when he sees his father's mug shot on the evening news. The same father who spends every other weekend kicked back, playing video games with Kevin. Authorities believe he is the hideous DB25 Monster -- the monster who tortures women and leaves them to die.

As the investigation proceeds at a snail's pace, Kevin is denied access to his father, which means he has no explanation as to why all of this is happening or how he's supposed to proceed with his life. How do you get back to normal when you share the face of a monster and are suspected of the same horrific acts purely by association?

Terri Fields, veteran author, plops readers into the hot seat and forces them to imagine what life would be like if usual comforts, like friends, privacy, and freedom, were stripped away.

The raw suspense of this novel will keep pages fluttering by and engage readers until the wee hours of the morning, which is when they'll finally be able to put the book down. The images and ideas remain long after, though.

I'll let you know when they go away.
