Fischer is a fascinating history of the study of birds and the ecology of the American southwest, influenced as the science was by more practical matters such as the Mexican-American War. An expansive bibliography and selection of maps help chart the course of compiled ornithology over the centuries. Overall, Early Southwest Ornithologists 1528-1900 is a fact-filled sourcebook, and very highly recommended reading for anyone with a keen interest in American Southwest birds and those who have studied them.

The eruption of Arizona's Sunset Crater is a fact. The legends of nearby Hopi regarding that AD 1064 event were woven into myths that persist to the present day. "Earth Fire" brings Catyclism and people who feel at one with all the Earth together. You will learn more about geology. You will learn more about the people who inhabited this land before the rest of the world came here. And by learning the Hopi response to disaster, you will learn more about yourself. The only negative is "Earth Fire" is now out of print. Once, we thought we had much to teach the Hopi. Now we know how much we have to learn from these people who still live in a beautiful world of their own.

This book rocks!....if you can find it.

I purchased this book for the benefit of my grandchildren to use on a fossil hunting trip (they are 9,10 & 12) I found it to be the perfect reference for them. It is explanitory without going too far into technical issues. There are a lot of pictures and descriptions as to what to look for. Each item is cross reference with the page to find it on. The book is small and easy to carry in a pack. Well worth the price paid.

For several years I have been building a library of reference material to assist me in understanding the ecology and rehabilitation of madrean oak savanna and grasslands in southeast Arizona. As a layman in the ecological sciences but rehabilitation practitioner on my own land, I found this book to be very useful and readable. An excellent addition to a library for those seeking to build a general understanding of savanna vegetative interactions and management. I also recommend The Desert Grassland for those specifically interested in southern Arizona.

College-level collections, doctors, nutritionists and even the general public will find EDIBLE MEDICINES: AN ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY OF FOOD an important guide linking food history, dietary needs and culture. Plenty has been written covering the nutritional values of food, but relatively little on the pharmacological potentials of diet: EDIBLE MEDICINES focuses on the medicinal properties of foods in different cultures and blends history with underlying medical concerns and reflections on human evolution. A fascinating survey.

I never realized it was worth so much.

I met Leigh Binford in Dec 1994 during the burial of the 143 children and 2 adults that were sent back for the formal burial at El Mozote. Binfords analysis is more in depth than Danners dramatic book as far as cultural background and historical development of El Mozote and the state of Morazan in general. I currently am living in San salvador and right now they (Medicina Legal Forensics) are currently exhuming massacre remains near San Vicente.

Too bad the whole worlds attention is so Pavlov to the Medias bidding to current events while the past -and current- U.S. Involvement in El Salvador is swept under the rug and hid behind low intensity conflict style blaming. "Oh its their fault" Yeah, we trained them, and knew it was going on all the time. Right NOW we are VERY involved in COLOMBIA, and everybody is just sitting and browsing the net with starbucks coffee., Lets get off our duffs and find out what's going on. "Oh, but wait.. I have to see if My plastic Horses have sold on Ebay." Good work LEIGH!

I have read the manuscript for this book and I am very impressed with the author's imagery, imagination and exquisite use of the short descriptive phrase. I truly believe he is one of the greatest modern poets writing today. In a world of bland conformity and imitation, his poetry is refreshingly original and unlike anyone else's. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
