Great State Report Book

Review Date: 2007-05-12
In California, in the 5th grade, students are expected to pick a state and write a report about it. My daughter, who is 10, picked Wyoming and we ordered this book. It was perfect! Lots of good information, presented at a level ideal for her age group and presented in a way that drew her in and kept her reading. I would highly recommend as an outstanding reference!

Includes the history of Wyoming, famous people from the area, information about the native American's from the area, details on the National parts, such as Yellowstone and much more.

First To Travel The Oregon Trail - Superb Historical Fiction
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-04
"Wyoming" is Book 3 in Dana Fuller Ross' magnificent "Wagons West" series and every bit as exciting and well written as the first two books, "Independence" and "Nebraska." If you are a fan of historical fiction and/or the frontier days in the Wild West, then you will thoroughly enjoy this series of 24 books. (This is a review for the Unabridged version of "Wyoming").

The first wagon train to cross the American continent and forge the Oregon Train reached the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the autumn of 1938. Over 500 weary pioneers considered themselves lucky if they traveled more than 10 miles per day. They found a safe valley in the Wyoming country where they could spend their second winter together before attempting the last leg of their journey to Oregon Territory. They had survived Indian attacks, floods, sabotage, illness and accidents and now had to build temporary housing and forage, prepare and store food for the bitter cold months ahead. If all went well, they would reach their new home by late summer 1839.

This group of farmers, artisans, professional men, merchants, adventure seekers, and their women and children were led by skilled veteran mountainman Whip Holt, and his blood brother, Cherokee warrior Stalking Horse. They were joined in Independence, Missouri by Lieutenant Colonel Lee Blake, the US Army's leading counterintelligence expert. He had been sent by President Martin Van Buren to help protect the wagon train from the British and Russian saboteurs who were determined to destroy it. Both Russia and Great Britain were vying with the US for possession of the Oregon Territory and all its riches.

The group had long since accustomed itself to communal living and almost everyone worked easily together for the benefit of all. They had also been joined by La-Ena, a beautiful Indian woman, half-sister of Stalking Horse who Holt had spent several winters with before leading the wagon train. Dolores, a half Mexican, half Indian woman and seer joined them as did Ginny Dobbs, a woman who had been badly hurt by life. Their stories, mingled with those of characters from the earlier books, greatly enrich the novel. An epidemic of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever struck and many died from this dreaded disease, so some characters are lost also.

The author vividly brings history to life in "Wyoming," as in the other books in the series. And the politics behind the settling of the West are fascinating. As one would expect, the novel is chock-full of adventure, hardship, courage, love, loss, tragedy and triumph. Many details have been taken from actual diaries and journals of early pioneers. Once you start this book you won't be able to stop until you have read all 24 novels. The next one is "Oregon," and deals with the last leg of the trip - reaching Oregon, building new lives and the confrontation between three great powers - the United States, Imperial Russia and Great Britain. Very highly recommended!

[FROM THE BACK]******* FROM WYOMING RENEGADE TO THE GREATEST DAD OF THE WEST? -- Cameron Wade reveled in the solitude of mountain vistas and a cloudless Wyoming sky. He was a man of the land, but his life was about to be invaded by three ornery kids and their single mom, Patricia Erhart.

His bachelor instincts urged him to run but this lady had something he wanted -- his old family ranch. So, to get close to the lovely widow, he had to risk his own heart......

Courting Patricia, Cameron was shocked to find himself wanting to be the perfect father to her kids -- and win over the wary rancher for real.

Could this ready-made family show the lonesome bachelor that being Wyoming born and bred, could lead to being a dad ... and to wed? ************
These are hard to tame -- and impossible to resist -- cowboys who meet their perfect match! from the mini series "Wranglers & Lace"
Another Highly Recommended book -- enjoy!

BEST BOOK EVER!

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED!!! This Book!. I was sad that it had ended, and was quite tempted to Read it again, but decided to read a new book instead. I loved the fact that all three stories included the same people from the stories before, but each story was totally different. I loved that it showed their feelings from each point of view, rather then some books just having one person feeling a certain way and you never know, what the other is thinking till the end. it was an awesome book. I could easily put myself there, and feel the way they were. I can't wait to read it again! & this is coming from someone who HATED to read! :)

This book is an excellent resource of rural 18th and 19th century architecture. Filled with approximately 400 black and white photographs it documents the various styles prevalent during this time period. Included with the photos are brief historical notes regarding the different townships of the county, prominent citizens of the past and information about each structure. There are many books similar to this about Buffalo and Rochester, but this is the only one that addresses this part of Western New York. Unfortunately many of the buildings in this book are now gone or lie vacant.

Brothers Matt and Tom Barkley just wanted to visit Chief Red Wolf's camp to buy a horse. They even took Amy, Tom's wife along. The last thing they expected was to find a white woman, Rachel Haynes, who had been captured by the Sioux and then traded to the Arapaho tribe. Amy wants to rescue Rachel but Tom convinces her they would fail, and would cause even more trouble for the white captive. Chief Red Wolf is Tom's friend, and he brings Rachel to them, but her coming stirs up more problems. Does God have a plan for Rachel? Is Matt part of the plan? A well written story about a young woman who isn't sure where she belongs. I always enjoy Susan Page Davis' historical romance, and Wyoming Hoofbeats is a good follow up for Protecting Amy and The Oregon Escort, books one and two of her Wyoming Brides trilogy.

This is a great little book that is full of Q & As all about this rugged state. It is easy to read, and fun to share. It promotes great conversations, and spurs the reader to investigate a myriad of topics further.

This book would be fantastic for:

Bed & Breakfasts, Inns, Cottages - great for travelers to peruse during their stay. Every room should have one.

Bars & Restaurants - fun to thumb through to promote conversation - have a few copies on hand in case a patron spills his beer on it.

Bathrooms - not to deep, relaxing read, thought provoking - every Wyoming bathroom should have one

Classrooms - This would be an inspiring book and teaching aid. It brings forth a variety of ideas that might lead a student to conduct further research.

Reading on a flight... to Wyoming... easy to start, easy to stop, easy to pack in any carry on. You'd have it nearly finished before your arrival, and would be a well informed tourist!

Got a few minutes between buffalo herds in Yellowstone? Read a few pages of Wyoming Trivia!

I could go on and on.. read during commercials, read while waiting for that big buck to saunter through the trees, read while waiting for the fish to bite, read while waiting for the rest of your party to finish shopping.

Enjoy it as much as I have!
