The Great Wisconsin Manhunt Of 1961 is the true story of an infamous shootout and fallout in the Wisconsin Dells in the summer of 1961. When a police officer was killed, it triggered one of the most intense manhunts in state history. Black-and-white photographs embellish this gripping, truth-more-compelling-than-fiction tale of the dogged chase, meticulously presented by University of Wisconsin professor Marshall Cook. A welcome addition to criminology collections, and especially recommended for "true crime" buffs, and as inspiration resouce for Wisconsin based mystery/action/suspense writers.

Sandy Sullivan is a doll of an author, and in this book she certainly does not fail to disappoint! The book is an excellent history on some of the best and brightest years of Green Bay Packer's football. And she would certainly know it all since she was always right there on the sideline, in the locker rooms, and spending all sorts of time personally cheering on the team. If you are a Packer's fan then this book is certainly for you. You won't be able to put it down at night, and you will learn so much that you never even knew about the greatest era of football and the greatest football team in U.S. history...the Green Bay Packers! Yeah, go green and gold!!!!!!!

The story of a modern hero of Israel
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-25
Ezer Weizmann made major contributions to the building of the modern state of Israel. In this autobiography he tells of his role in building the Israeli Air Force. He was one of the first fighter- pilots helping to establish the State in its War of Independence. More than anyone else he helped build the Israeli Air Force into one of the best in the world. He was the architect of the Israeli lightning air- victory in the Six Day War. Later he entered politics and was a central figure in forming the Likud party and helping bring a major transformation , the dethroning of the Labor party and the bringing of Menachem Begin's Likud to power. This work is the story of these early glory years.
It does not tell of the political conversion Weizmann made in later life, his moving into what is called the 'peace- camp' in Israel, his key role in the peace negotiations with Egypt at Camp David. It too does not tell of his controversial reign as President of Israel.
Like his sometime rival Yitzhak Rabin, Weizmann for many exemplified the Israeli sabra hero of the first years of the State. Frank, humorous, tremendously innovative and energetic he brought life and flavor into all he did . He was a true believer in Israel, and the Zionist enterprise and a great contributor to it. And was much loved by its people.
This review is written the day after his passing from the world. May his soul be uplifted and his memory and work be a blessing for the generations of Israel to come.

Essays that read like delightful stories

Gerber's newest book is one of those juicy reads that both writers and reflective readers have such fun with. It's all about how she thinks, feels, invents, and copes with life, and the writing life in particular. What could be more fascinating, especially in the hands of a master like Gerber? In the form of personal essays and stories that float above the border between fiction and memoir, Gut Feelings is a beautifully detailed introduction to the mind of a prize-winning novelist and short story writer who's been at it for decades. From how she fell in love with her husband, to tales of the various suicides she's known, to a short unfinished autobiography (with photos), this is one of those grab-bags in which every single item you pull out is worth examining closely and cherishing. Portions have appeared in various prestigious literary journals, but the compilation feels as though it was originally intended to be gathered all together in this one place - so we could get to share a satisfying amount of time with one fine writer. Lovely!

As the author writes, food is more than nutrients, It is our culture, and thus our laws reflect our cultural attitudes towards food. I picked up this fish-tale of laws by a curator of a mustard museum after I coincidentally attended a mustard festival. Levenson's book requires no pre-knowledge of the law; it provides an exciting, funny, enlightening story of food and our laws. Levenson writes that he toiled at a boring law job until he came across an exciting law case from 1924, in which a man sued a railroad and restaurant chain for requiring diners to wear dinner jackets. Now that was an interesting case (the barbaric diner lost), he thought. It got Levenson on a roll of researching and collecting food laws. The reader is the beneficiary.

The author provides stories and cases on food poisoning; the origins of the USDA FSIS, FTC and FDA; adulteration; advertising claims; and federal regulations defining peanut butter, catsup, fancy and standard ketchup. Also explored are The Delaney Clause, the labeling act, the Lanham Act, the doctrine of privity, the condom in the coke and other stories of foreign objects, fish bone choking cases, and stories about trademarks, such as the case between Planter's Mr. Peanut and Crown Nut's little peanut king. There is a whole chapter on kosher laws, state regulations, and kosher fraud. He explains why restaurant reviews can get around libel laws, why 60 Minutes was sued over an Alar story, and Oprah got in trouble with big beef. A Wisconsin resident, he tells the tale of how a state tried to stop Dairy Queen and margarine from crossing its statelines.

Hilarious synopses of cases are also included in easily readable form, including stories about the robber who left his fingerprints behind on a pack of hotdogs; the court that convicted a man of assault with an edible weapon (a salami); the man who sued a restaurant over having to pay a mandatory 15 percent tip for his party of `six or more'; the murderer who was put to death and whose last words complained that "I didn't get my SpaghettiOs" for his final meal; a 1962 case over a hard stale roll; and the Dept of Justice's prohibition (using the Clayton Act) of Mrs. Smith Pies purchase of LJ Harris Pie Company (so they couldn't get a bigger piece of the pie (market)).

Levenson also explains the law behind how Pizza Hut was able to sue Papa John's pizza over tomato sauce commercials, and why, in Liebeck vs McDonald's, a 79 year old woman, Stella, was INITIALLY awarded $2.86 million over a spilled cup of hot coffee. (She only wanted $20,000, McDonald's offered $800, and then the lawyers got involved). Buy it and read it before you take another bite!

Hard Water: Politics And Water Supply In Milwaukee, 1870-1995 by educator and urban studies specialist Kate Foss-Mollan is the documented and historical account of the water supply of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Foss-Mollan blends urban history, technology, biology, research, and political science into a remarkably intriguing and informative saga. From conflicts over supplying poor neighborhoods to partisan debates regarding the necessity of a filtration plant, Hard Water spans over a century with an eye-opening account of the wrangling, machinations, and more all about a seemingly simple drink of water. Very highly recommended for American urban studies reading lists.
