This book is a must-buy for those seriously interested in taking up print collecting or indeed wishing to gain experience in appreciating prints. Its coverage is magnificent in its breadth and detail. When I purchased from Amazon, I bought two copies - one copy was requested by an art historian - high praise indeed!

Review Date: 2008-02-05
Author and Baha'i faithful Frank Stetzer presents Religion on the Healing Edge: What Baha'is Believe, a thoughtful introduction to the Baha'i faith and its practices. Chapters discuss the Baha'i covenant, the Baha'i concept of self-governance (clergy and ritual are not considered necessary), the principle of being loyal to one's government yet not involved in politics (a concept that is not complete withdrawal - Baha'i are permitted to vote, talk to elected representatives, or run for political office, as long as they do not identify with a political party), the Baha'i condemnation of gossip and slander, and much more. A readily accessible primer to Baha'i tenets enthusiastically recommended to anyone seeking to learn more about the faith, whether for personal or scholarly reasons.

A great book for everyone.

Especially for those people who know a Bahá'i or have a Bahá'i family member but don't really "get" what Bahá'i is. This book is an expertly written explanation of many things Bahá'i. It uses intelligent language and sacred texts to explain everything from a basic history of The Bahá'i Faith, The Covenant of Baha'u'llah, and Bahá'i laws and responsibilities. It will truly give the reader a foundation for understanding The Bahá'i Faith and its believers.

A need to rethink the 'Regionalism' of the Regionalists

Review Date: 1998-09-25
This book makes you rethink any ideas you might have about Regionalism. Whether you agree with James Dennis or not is up to you, but he certainly does bring up some very interesting ideas. The basic ideas of the Regionalism school are initially laid out for the reader, and from this beginning it is already possible to see the weak foundation of the very definition of "Regionalism," as it was defined NOT by the artists, but by their critics and the public. The sterotyping generalities inherent in this 'school' set the stage for Dennis' questioning of the similarities of the work of Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steurat Curry, the triumvirate of Regionalism. The author proceeds to explicate the inherent differences between the 3 artists' work, as well as the eventually obvious flawed general definition of "Regionalism." Dennis breaks down his discussions into realism vs. abstraction, realistic subject matter vs. fantasies, the ideas of nationalism and fascism in the artists' work, their varying depictions of women, and finally compares the three Regionalists to three contemporary modernists, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, and Marsden Hartley. Dennis concludes with the assertion that the so-called "Regionalists" are in many ways more "modern" than their modernists contemporaries. The book has plenty of pictures, sadly only in black and white, and thus the book is a surprisingly quick read. Each chapter is thorough however, and must be studied to be fully understood. The reader should have some art historical background, and some knowledge of the history of the first half of the 20th century. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Regionalism, and the history of American art. Makes you think.

Finally. A well thought out and well executed book about a major movement in American art that is often dismissed as being one dimensional. Dennis' introspective look into the most revered "Regionalist" artists not only offers engaging scholarship, but a very good education in American social history as well. A must read for anyone who thinks they know what "Regionalism" is.

This is a fabulous book. I wish there had been one about Illinois. It is broadly divided into sections of Arts & Culture, Innovative Farming, Building Community, Toward a Healthy Planet, Travel & Recreation, Good Enough to Eat, and Learning & Action. It is inspiring to read about how the people and small businesses are impacting their communities and improving the world. I live close enough that I hope to visit some of the places written about and I've been asking the managers of some local stores if they could stock some of these more local products.

Compiled and co-edited by the team of Jerry Hembd, Jody Padgham, and Jan Joannides, and enhanced with an informative foreword by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, "Renewing The Countryside: Wisconsin" beautifully and informatively showcases thirty-nine creative, hard-working people, organization and business that are infusing the Wisconsin countryside with life and activity. "Renewing The Countryside: Wisconsin " is organized into seven chapters covering arts and culture, farming, green business, conservation, tourism, community development, and education. From the story of how the city of Washburn on Wisconsin's Chequamegon Bay became the country's first eco-municipality; to how 'Growing Power' is connecting urban Milwaukee kids to fresh food and country side; to how innovative farmers and artisan food makers are bringing sustainability and organically grown products to consumers throughout Wisconsin, "Renewing The Countryside: Wisconsin" offers inspiring examples of what the reader can do in his or her own part of the Badger state. Simply stated, "Renewing The Countryside: Wisconsin ", which is also available in a hardcover edition (9780979545801, $39.95), should be a part of every Wisconsin school and community library -- and would ably serve as a template for similar books featuring similar efforts with respect to the rural economies and conditions in other states.

Details of a German Past
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-02
Primarily a memoir for his first twenty years of life, Jurgen Herbst goes into great detail about his coming-of-age experiences in the Third Reich. He was raised in the Prussian military tradition emphasizing a strong sense of family, country, and church, and thus spends his adolescence trying to reconcile these notions with the propaganda and events of Hitler's Reich. He joins the Jungvolk (as all youths in Germany were required) and sees it primarily as a means to advance into the military career he has always dreamed of. Along the way, through his experiences, he sees that the Third Reich is not all it claims to be.

Herbst's book, which reads very much like a novel, is one-of-a-kind; not many books describe the life and experiences of boys in the Jungvolk or the Hitler Jugend. Even if you only have a cursory interest in Nazi Germany, I highly recommend reading this book.

GRIPPING PERSPECTIVE ON GERMANY IN 1930-40'S

I took courses in the History of Education under Dr. Herbst (1967-69)and found him to be a very engaging teacher--one of the best I had in graduate school. I knew nothing about his past, except that he was German-born, until I heard of this book. This man has a way with words! In this brief but very compact and vivid memoir, he deals with some of the great dilemmas of life--in any period--,although of course he focuses on the period 1928-1948, his first twenty years. Herbst's memoir reminds me of another memoir of a childhood that can teach us all many valuable lessons (Irving Louis Horowitz, DAYDREAMS AND NIGHTMARES). REQUIEM is profoundly gripping. A must-read (and probably re-read) to help us understand our own times . . .and our own selves.

Research Shortcuts. (rev. 2003). Judi Kesselman-Turkel and Franklynn P. Peterson.
Review By: Sharon Baffa Keeling, Academic Advisor,
Departments of Political Science and Sociology/Anthropology
Western Illinois University, Macomb

The authors of Research Shortcuts effectively guide the reader from preliminary research to final draft in 108 pages of clear and concise tips. Although intended for a student audience, this quick and easy read will appeal to all writers, new or experienced. Prolific authors themselves, Kesselman-Turkel and Peterson promise to deliver ".techniques and shortcuts that years of research time have taught us, so that you can find your way like a pro to the best and fastest resources for your own projects" (p.viii). They succeed indeed.

The 38 shortcuts contained in this book are divided into five sections that serve as an outline for completing a research and writing project. The authors emphasize the importance of organizing research to maximize efforts and provide a formula for estimating the reasonable number of hours necessary to research and write. They stress the time saving quality of careful note taking and furnish illustrations of the detailed bibliography forms they use in their own research. Note: these forms would be more useful if they were camera ready so they could be copied directly from the book. Additionally, the authors introduce interview techniques that novice researchers may overlook and provide detailed tips for successful face-to-face and telephone interviews. A warning to the reader is needed here. The authors assert that it is acceptable to tape record a phone interview with the consent of one party to the conversation. However, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Website informs readers that Federal law allowing for "one-party consent" recordings has been strengthened by some states. Thus, prudent researchers should always ask permission before taping a telephone interview.

Research Shortcuts is a book advisors can easily recommend to all students, and especially to those who are inexperienced writers still developing a voice and writing style. This is not a daunting read and it offers sound advice: follow an outline, stay organized, research with a clear purpose, and, finally, write. Affordably priced at $6.95, this is a resource students can use repeatedly for all types of research.

Great Story About a Teen and a Second Chance

This book is a great way to teach ecology concepts to adolescents, but it's also a quick read. Corey quickly becomes a friend of the reader, although most readers would agree at the beginning that Corey is somewhat a geek. Through his trials, he shares with the reader his love of nature, especially the praries of Wisconsin. All the places mentioned in the book really do exist, as well as all the ecological concepts. This was an awesome story and my students couldn't wait to read his next book; Trouble in the Barrens.

It's a coming of age story about a teenage boy's struggle.

I loved this book. The writer knows what happens to young adolescents when they don't "fit in" to their high school society. They get harrassed, rejected, taunted and humiliated, and some teachers look on and fail to protect, even seem to sanction. But the grieving young man in this fast moving story takes to the near by woods and prairie, studies the plants and animals, hangs out with the natural world. And is richly rewarded by being needed in a restoration project. The story could not be more timely, when we are all talking about teenage anger and its sometimes tragic expression. Edith Nash
