Great Maps

The Mobile book has great maps. However, the layout of the book other than the maps is not user friendly. When we traveled in New England, we went to "regions" not just cities. The book is laid out with recommendations under each city. Some of the other books we used had regional groups rather than just cities. The maps were the most detailed and were what we relied upon most of the trip.

Traveller to Maine

We checked out the Mobil Travel Guide New England 2005 from the library for our trip to Maine. We thought it was so good, that on our return we ordered it to have for the other states. The hotels, inns, and restaurants were very accurately described. No disappointments.

My 7 yr old loves this story, and so do I

This is a very nice story about a slave boy growing up on a Virginia plantation. It is taken from a true story, and a little about the person is written at the end. It is well written and enjoyable for children, and gives them a peak at what life must have been like as a slave without be morose. It is also well illustrated. My 7 year old requests it be read to her on a regular basis.

Good for multi-state travel...

This book was great for helping us get around the interstates and highways. It doesn't have much in the way of smaller town road maps making getting around in small New England towns a bit more cumbersome. But I do recommend the book for anyone planning a trip to multiple New England states.

Pioneer in Jewish-Catholic Dialogue

Review Date: 2007-06-18
This life of a German Benedictine monk gives the "back story" to some of the important developments in Catholic and Jewish understanding. Rudloff came to the US before WW II and taught at Seton Hall University, was sent to Jerusalem to reopen the Monastery of Sion, and founded Weston Priory in Vermont to support and continue the work of the Jerusalem monastery. This book is well-written by one of Abbot Leo's fellow monks at Weston. It includes a lot of insight into his character, his struggles as a man ahead of his time in his church, and into Jewish-Catholic relations. I recommend it for readers interested in those topics.

Nice Resource for the Serious Rider
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-04
The maps in this book are very localized - Boston, the Berkshires, mid Maine Coast. So depending on where you are, you either get a bunch of rides or none at all. Only Vermont is really fully represented.

The maps are clearly drawn and good, and work well in conjunction with a GPS. The directions are broken out by consecutive mile, which is the way I like it, but they should also provide the "miles to next leg" information too for people who prefer that.

The book offers thorough information on dress, etiquette, food and more. It suggests you take it easy - "don't be goaded by others into riding a tour that you feel unprepared for."

Good challenging rides for those who want to drive out and do a 50-100 mile ride somewhere beautiful. Again, because of the length and the fact that you're probably going a distance from home, I definitely suggest bringing a GPS and scoping out which businesses are still in business for food and other necessities beforehand.

romance and romantic rapacity
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-29
Judge Thompson's famous 1839 historical novel (perhaps the first ever in America) of the famous Allen, Warner, Baker, Cochran (et al.) adventures, from the Grants to old "Fort Ti."

It is also slushed to the brim with spine-tingling romance:
"'I know not,' he answered, somewhat pensively, 'that circumstances will ever permit me that pleasure in person, but if you know of any way, fair ladies,' - he continued, glancing quite meaningly at somebody, as the girls in their jokes would afterwards have it - 'any way of receiving the visits I may pay you in dreams, I doubt not that you will often be favored with the repetition you have so kindly invited. Adieu, ladies, adieu.'" -Mr. Selden (pg. 143)

Advisable to familiarize oneself with the history prior to reading, to guarantee enjoyment. And it is very enjoyable.

Useful but not comprehensive
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-01
A good book which largely delivers what it promises. However, it is best used in conjunction with a more comprehensive map and/or guide, if you're visiting a particular region. Give it 4.5 stars.

Good Points: 1) The author points out "kid-friendly" features on hikes and gives good descriptions. 2) Most of the hikes have pretty good thumbnail maps

Drawbacks: 1) Introductory map could be better (more detailed) to help reader find trails 2) Some hikes lack thumbnail maps. Why? 3) Abilities of children vary wildly. We found that a "moderate" hike can be strenuous for an inexperienced or out-of-shape child (or adult, for that matter).

Better than standard 3e
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-14
This book has plenty of instruciton, sample problems, and practice problems to get a student through an intro calc course easily and maybe more advanced ones too. It contains basic calculus as well as a few sections on calculus of several vairables. This edition for the University of Vermont gives the regular text plus several hundred pages with geometry, trig and stats. If you go to the University of Vermont, the curriculum will require this book. At other schools, this is better than the standard 3rd ed. text because it has basic information you could have missed in previous classes or can be useful just for a refresher.

The Cashmere Kid is quite entertaining reminding me of a popular t.v. mystery show. I found this book perfect to curl up with and completely forget about the real world for a while. Don't want to give the story away, but I can recomend this book as something delightful and different.
