Recipes From the Moon is full of positively mouth-watering, healthful dishes. They are easy and quick to prepare and taste like they came from a gourmet restaurant, only with less fat, sodium, and cholestrol. Whereas the original Horn of the Moon Cookbook is loaded with recipes calling for butter, cheese, cream, and eggs, Recipes From the Moon holds back on these ingredients, substituting healthful alternatives without sacrificing taste. Recipes From the Moon is like a breath of fresh air. Now I not only enjoy cooking and eating, but I can feel confident that I'm not filling my body up with artery-clogging, blood pressure-raising food products. If you want to prepare healthful dishes without losing the taste, try Recipes From the Moon. If you're ever in Montpelier, VT, go to the Horn of the Moon Cafe, the very spot where these mouth-watering dishes were invented!!!

This is one of the best town history books that I have seen in Vermont. The pictures are great, with lots of the 1927 flood.

I purchased this book for my husband who has a lively if amateur interest in geology, so that we could consult it during a trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It is one of a series that seem to be very well done, especially because you can refer to the landscape as you are traveling according to the indexing in the book.

After death of her husband, woman is left with a large family to raise by herself. She moves to an old Vermont farm and goes into dairy farming - against all odds. One of my favorite books - great reading even though its over 40 years old. I will re-read it again.

An extremely well written and well researched book, all together very readable and engrossing. Indepth account of the four troublesome years of Rudyard and Carrie Kipling while in Vermont. All in all, however, a too short book.

I had no idea there were so many great color photo's of the Rutland out there. As a very active Rutland Rail Fanner and a member of the RRHS I thought over the years I had seen most of the photo's to be seen, but this book full of rare color shots of the Rutland just blew me away.
My special interest is in the Island Line and the shots from up there were just fantastic.
Thanks to all who put this together and my only Question is when will Volume 2 Be out!

This was an awesome book. My 3rd Grader loved it. It does have a murder scene but is easy to distract younger ones from that part of the story or skip over the details...making it okay to read to a younger audience. Sparked a lot of interest in pirates and also heritage/heirlooms. Very well done. Pictures are captivating.

Great regimental history of the 2nd Vermont

This is a superb regimental history of the Second Vermont Volunteers, about as detailed and informative as one could expect. The regiment participated in the war from First Bull Run to Lee's surrender at Appomattox, seeing their last action near Farmville. Oddly (and it's these kinds of fascinating little details that are sprinkled throughout the book that make it so interesting), the last man in the 2nd Vermont to be wounded (Thomas Broughton) was also one of the first, taking a minie ball just above the knee at Bull Run. Other major engagements include the Peninsula in 1862, Savage's Station, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, and Petersburg.
The thoroughness of the book is truly astounding. Zeller cites from official records as well as individual diaries kept by the soldiers and letters that have come to light. The book is also well-illustrated with many photographs, and there are many maps included as well. Finally, a complete roster of the 1,800+ men who served in the regiment, including many particulars about each man, is also part of the book. Not only is the book a definitive account of the 2nd Vermont, but since the regiment served in so many important campaigns and engagements in the eastern theatre, it's also a mini history of that part of the war. It's an excellent addition to the serious Civil War student's library. [McFarland & Company offers an excellent array of Civil War books, many of them regimental histories like this one. Kendall's book is a slice of American World War 2 nostalgia.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jay Kendall's book. His characters are a vivid and realistic example of rural New England folk during World War 2. The book is written from the viewpoints of the different characters. Each chapter, or in some cases each part of a chapter, takes on a flavor distinct to the narrator. Michael, the first narrator, is a young boy who certainly has a grown up outlook. His grandfather, who is also introduced in the first chapter has a little idiosyncrasy - he speaks of himself in the third person. Although this is a bit odd, it gives a warmth to his personality. Each of the characters comes to life through their own words or through the words of other characters. The cover of the book is an intricate quilt. The story begins much as a quilt begins with fragments that have no real connection until Mr. Kendall begins to tie the pieces together and the reader begins to see the intricate pattern of the quilt fall into place. Although the characters are all basically good people, the secrets they've kept are revealed as the story progresses and these secrets have the potential to do some damage. Parts of the book will make you laugh out loud, parts will make you cry, but when you finish reading it, you'll find yourself looking for more.

Excerpted by permission from the Proceedings of the Vermont Historical Society, this unusual work lists the names of nearly 6,000 Revolutionary soldiers buried in Vermont, many of the soldiers having emigrated there from other states during the years immediately following the Revolution. The names were gathered from a variety of sources, but the largest number by far was extracted from a rare list of Vermont Revolutionary pensioners, a list embracing invalid pensioners, pensioners under the act of March 18, 1818, and pensioners under the act of June 7, 1832. Supplementing the lists is a section devoted to anecdotes and incidents of some of the Vermont soldiers in the various campaigns. The soldiers are listed alphabetically by county or town of interment.
