A welcome contribution to American photographic history

The Shipler family dominated photography in Utah for about 100 years. James Shipler left his Pittsburgh camera shop in 1889 to relocate in Salt Lake City and pioneered in photographer there. With his death in 1937, his son Harry succeeded him, with grandson Bill and great-grandson Hollis eventually taking their turn in the family business. About 100,000 Shipler glass-plate and film negatives survive in the archives of the Utah State Historical Society. Seeing Salt Lake City: The Legacy Of The Shipler Photographers comprises 175 of the best of these photographic legacy, reproduced as full-page images and historically showcasing Utah's capital city. From 1903 and a view of the Fremont School on Third West with a surrey parked outside awaiting its owner, to a 1940 photo of a row of Ford coupes outside the Crystal Palace Market on South Temple Street, each image is noted for its depth, clarity, and perspective, as well as the architecture evident with the growth and maturation of an American metropolis of the west. Seeing Salt Lake City is an impressive testament to one family's photographic artistry, and a welcome contribution to American photographic history.

It seems difficult to find good, solid, archaeological literature that is also easy to read. Seeking Center Place does both very well. The collected articles are highly informative without being weighed down by complicated writing. I recommend this book for both scholars and the general public. The Crow Canyon Center has come a very long way in their research and their publications are really a must for anyone studying or those curious about the Anasazi of Southwestern Colroado.

I used this book extensively in my PhD research and found that all of the articles had something of use, either by direct correlation or by broader generalizations. Add this book to your library, I don't think you will be displeased.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

I love old photo-history books, and this is one of the best. It shows photographs of the Salt Lake Mormon Temple, taken by various photographers at different times during its construction. Many historic photos are contained here. Also, much of the history of Utah as a Territory can be learned by the photos and the text.

I gained a greater appreciation for the pioneers and their legacy, by reading this book.

His description of his work, the land, and his discovery of self cause a reader to reflect on experiences that lead to finding meaningful life work. I recommend the book.

Madsen has done the landmark book for western history afficionados, as well as for historians who want to delve into documentation on the Bear River Massacre.
His impeccable research, with enough depth for scholars, seemingly has a view towards the eye of the average reader as well.

Anyone who wants a feel for this tragic chapter in Native History, with plenty of heavily footnoted documentation, will find Madsens book a great addition to their research library.
I recommend it highly!

Anthropology professors Christine S. Vanpool and Todd L. Vanpool present Signs of the Casas Grandes Shamans, a scholarly evaluation of artifacts of a religious system that flourished in what is now northern Mexico and the southern United States between AD 1200 and 1450. Casas Grandes, or Paquime, in northern Chihuahua, Mexico was the home of this faith, expressed in stunning polychrome pots with black and red geometric and naturalistic designs, and a cream base. These exceptional pottery artifacts offer insight into Casas Grandes cosmology, revealing a shaman-centric religion. Shamans called to horned serpents to bring rain; dealt with snakes; and raised, sacrificed, and interred macaws as ritual offerings to perpetuate water and fertility. Black-and-white photographs of recovered artifacts and diagrams of ancient artworks illustrate this scholarly evaluation of protohistoric art, culture, symbolism, and faith. Highly recommended especially for anthropology and archaeology shelves.
