An anthology of essays addressing issues of academic writing
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-13
Collaboratively compiled and expertly edited by Anne Herrington (Professor and Chair of English, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and Charles Moran (Professor of English, emeritust, University of Massachusetts, Amherst), Genre Across The Curriculum is an anthology of essays addressing issues of academic writing as taught in college courses nationwide. Intended especially for teachers, Genre Across The Curriculum includes models of genre theory and practice, descriptions of teachers who have incorporated genre teaching into their pedagogy, a keen-eyed look at courses involving writing among a wide range of disciplines, and much more. Individual essays discuss topics ranging from using genre to teach academic writing to ESL students in the humanities ("I Was Just Never Exposed to This Argument Thing"), what genre theory can tell us of writing history, writing in emergent genres, and much more. A thoughtful, detailed, and at times technical anthology and a welcome contribution to academic theory and instruction shelves concerning writing.

An Excellent Overview of Utah's Geologic Treasures.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-15
Utah's parks and monuments showcase some of the world's most spectacular geology and this book covers it all - every national park, monument, and recreation area; 10 state parks; the Sheep Creek Geological Area; the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park; and the Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area.

It is well written and illustrated, including abundant photographs, diagrams, maps, stratigrapic columns, and cross-sections. From the crusty old geologist to those with a passing curiosity about the rocks and landscape this book has something for everyone. Read it and you are likely to know more than the rangers!

Reasonable priced for a book this size.

Thankfully More than a Ghost Story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-22

There are some ghosts in the first chapter of Ghosts of the Oquirrhs by Marilyn Brown. Thankfully, they mostly disappear in favor of a lovely story based on a young woman's diary the author inherited from her grandfather.

I say "thankfully" because the ghosts are never fully realized. Ghosts, after all, have a tendency to be ethereal. I say "thankfully" because the meat and bones history of a small mining town in Utah are much more interesting that ghosts. I say "thankfully" because the sweetness in this Utah town is not the ghosts but its tendency toward acceptance of all, regardless of color or religion. And the story of how this town called Sweet Pie very nearly lost its innocence is of much greater value than any ghost story I've ever read. I say "thankfully" because the protagonist, one Miss Cecily McKinsey, is of far more interest as a real life girl of her time than the eerie winds that whistle through the underground mines in her town ever could be.

Marilyn Brown is an author steeped in love for the history of her state. She brings it alive in this unaffected novel about love and how it can be endangered by pettiness and how it can triumph when good people stand firm in the face of evil.

The author's sensitivity is apparent in her language and her characters. She is also the author of "Statehood" and "The Earthkeepers."

If you think you know everything about Glen Canyon, read this book, and then think again.
If you like your history as factual and onrushing and unstoppable as an avalanche, read this book.
This book is brimming, crammed full, exploding with facts. It is an astoundingly complete book of Glen Canyon history, and I can find no fault with it.

Legal, theological and ethical concerns alike are revealed
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-12
Plenty of books have been written about the history and religion of Mormons; but far fewer consider the modern political and social impact of Mormonism in Utah today. Enter God And Country: Politics In Utah, edited by Jeffrey Sells, Rector of St. David of Wales Church in Washington. His religious involvement lends authority and background to his discussion of religious influence in civic affairs, offering insights not into Mormon and Utah political and religious connections, but into church and state issues and interactions across the country. Legal, theological and ethical concerns alike are revealed in chapters which utilize Utah experiences and interactions as solid examples.

i just love this book. it talks about qalandars and haydaris and other "unruly" and "heretical" dervish groups which have almost been forgotten with vivid details and old drawings. But most importantly it delves into the reason behind their actions and the way they lived. At this day and age, and for these modern societies, the world absolutely needs Qalandars or perhaps neo-Qalandars.

one of the most fascinating books i've read on history and extinct groups.

The author's take you inside the kitchens of Utah's best restaurants (at the time of writing). It's great reading and great recipes, too!

The variety is outstanding, covering such establishments (and food styles) as CHARLIE CHOW, FERRANTELLI, CAFE TERIGO, AMERICAN GRILL, SQUATTER'S PUB BREWERY, MIKADO, HUNGRY I, MILLCREEK INN, THE NEW YORKER, and others.

Highly recommended.
