Finally, a book focusing exclusively on orchids in South Carolina.

A must have compendium of SC species presented in a first-hand accounting of one man's remarkable journey with these plants. Each has a photo of a grouping in situ and closeups of floral parts, there is room for notes and extensive explanations of habitat needs, personal observations, recollections and recommendations for where you might find the plant. This is an exceptional book and I highly recommend it. I recently had an opportunity to correspond with the author and his intoxication with our wild orchids is contageous and enlightening.

Wilmington has been shown in a lot of movies. It's a beautiful city located in coastal North Carolina. But i have to congrat the authors and other people involved for their job by doing this book. It's absolutely wonderful! Has a lot of information and tons of great pictures. Now that i've read this book, i know why producers and directors choose Wilmington as a location for their movies and series. Really excelent book !

Windows of the Heart: The Correspondence of Thomas Wolfe and Margaret Roberts collects seventy-five letters exchanged between twentieth-century author Thomas Wolfe and his influential grade-school teacher, Margaret Roberts, whom he called "the mother of my spirit". These writings reveal their complicated relationship, and a driving force in Wolfe's life and personal growth. For her part, Roberts was one of Wolfe's strongest supporters of his literary potential since his talent shined through in a writing contest he won at age eleven. Now their letters are published in their entirety for the first time, along with forty-two black-and-white photographs; the result is a welcome addition to literary studies shelves and a "must-read" for anyone seeking to understand more about Wolfe's life and works.

I have had the privilege of having Kwame Dawes as my academic advisor at the University of South Carolina. USC is now in the midst of the Spring Writers Festival, and Dr. Dawes read some selections from Wisteria at last night's session. To hear him read these poems, to hear him sing and tell the stories behind the poems, those who inspired this work, was a truly unforgettable experience. The poetry itself is breathtaking; attending his reading was an added bonus. Do yourself a favor and add Wisteria to your collection.

AWARD WINNING ACADEMIC BOOK
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-27
"Choice," a leading book review digest, listed "Women and Revolution in Africa, Asia, and the New World" as an Outstanding Academic Book in Political Science for the years 1992-1997. It contains much needed information about women's participation in sixteen revolutionary upheavals -- three in Africa, four in Asia, three in the Middle East, four in Latin America, as well as Afganistan and Yugoslavia. Each chapter covers the status of women before the revolution, their contributions during the revolution, and their postrevolutionary status. "Revolutions" vary from outright war to liberation movements, they rise from different beliefs, and participants set different goals, but one outcome remains the same: in each case, the interests of women are subordinated, a strong commitment to a women's agenda does not emerge. The double message -- that women participate in major ways in reform movements, even violent ones, and that women do not profit correspondingly -- needs to be clear to all those who believe that equal rights have long since been won. Sixteen examples from around the world present a strong message.

I purchased this book because it references several of my husband's ancestors. It is very fascinating to have an insight to how they lived and what other people thought of them as it is a compilation of letters written by real people. I recommend this book to anyone interested in real history and real life in those times.

Having already read and enjoyed Miles' other book about the islands, I am pleased to say I was again very satisfied with her work on the Lowcountry. The book is very personal yet informative, mixing historical fact with the author's personal touch to really grab your interest. I love the quirky stories, especially the one about Buster the cat. This book is enjoyable and easy to read and will teach you everything there is to know about the Lowcountry from a local's, and therefore, best point of view.
