South Carolina Books

If you are researching the Upper or Lower Creek Indians or the Chickasaw Indians of the late 1600s to early 1700s, this is a book you simply have to have, so this new edition is heartily welcomed! Thomas Nairne was an Indian Agent devoted to the spread of English culture and goods throughout the southeast. He opposed the Spanish, who had the same goals, and successfully brought many southeastern Indian towns and confederations into South Carolina's field of influence. He was killed at the very beginning of the Yemassee War, in 1715, attempting to diffuse the powder keg of Indian anger at unscrupulous Carolinian traders (which was largely justified), and though it took a while, many of his viewpoints and plans for the Indian trade were eventually adopted by the United States. His map of the southeast, showing locations of Indian towns just after 1700, is, along with this book, one of the most important primary documents of the era. Unfortunately the map is reprinted so small in this edition that none of the detail can be seen.

This is a riveting account of Southern living during the depression. Being from the south myself this book was right on target with its depictions of lower class families and the struggles that plagued their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lived in the south, as well as anyone who is interested in history. Treat youself to a few good laughs and many lessons with this book, it is well worth it!

Good book if you are a Roper and would like to know more about your ancestry. Moses was part black slave, part white Roper so his trials in life are interesting to White Ropers and Black Ropers. Hmmm? Does this mean I get to go to more family reunions than I do now? Good little book for the house to leave out and about, too, for others to see. Get it.

This turns out to be an outstanding book and I'm very happy to have it. The text is pleasant to read, written in a friendly and personal way. The pictures are crisp and beautiful, and laid out nicely alongside the text for easy access while reading the description. One outstanding feature is the detailed habitat information based on the author's years of field experience in observing the habitats of each of these orchids. Another stand-out is that the author has done the photography himself, resulting in pictures that support and complement the text very well. I checked several books on orchids and wildflowers while trying to identify an orchid in my forest (which turns out to be a lily-leaved twayblade), and I found this book to be the best. In summary, I'm impressed with this book. I hope it will set a new standard for other books on regional wildflowers.

I'm surprised that I'm the first reviewer of this book! When I took a course on International Negotiations last year, all my fellow students found Hopmann's book excellent. It is by far the most structured book I've ever read, with a very simple and concise language. After creating a simple, bilateral model of negotiation, Hopmann adds additional elements one-by-one, each of which makes the model both more complex and more realistic. First, he drops the assumption of equality between parties. Second, he modifies the assumption that individuals are perfectly rational. Third, Hopmann eliminates the assumption that negotiations are conducted by individuals (or a unitary actor) and focuses instead on the role of national bureaucracies and politics on negotiations. Fourth, he no longer views negotiations in static terms, but rather looks at how the interaction process itself affects the outcomes of negotiations. Fifth, he dismisses the assumption that the parties are negotiating in a vacuum and introduces the effects of the international environment. Sixth, he drops the assumption of simple bilateral negotiations and introduces the role of third parties as arbitrators and mediators. Seventh and finally, he expands the focus to include large, complex, and multilateral negotiations of the kind that occur in OAS and the UN. As Hopmann argues: "By adding these elements of complexity one at a time, we can best analyze what special impact each feature has on the overall relationship between the negotiation process and its outcomes." This book is truly a must-have for all those interested in negotiation. It is simple and understandable, providing concrete - and at times even "amusing" - examples.

Doyle traces the transition years between Old South and New South in Atlanta, Nashville, Charleston and Mobile between 1860 and 1910. Wonderful compilation of both quantitative and qualitative sources; the sources from newspapers during the time act like time capsules into the period. The newspaper sources combined with some photographs and maps make Doyle's book a well-researched place for students of Southern history and culture to enjoy an insightful glimpse into particular loci in the south. Students interested in the too-often forgetten urban south should get this book

New Paths to Raymond Carver: Critical Essays on His Life, Fiction, and Poetry is an anthology of essays by learned authors concerning Raymond Carver's body of prose and poetry. Among the authors are renowned Carver scholars Randolph Paul Runyon and Kirk Nesset, Carver's longtime friend and compatriot writer William Kittredge, and others from such diverse nations as France, Norway, Canada, and the United States. The first half of New Paths to Raymond Carver consists of six essays discussing Carver's poems throughout his career, while the second half interprets Carver's fiction. Rounding out New Paths to Raymond Carver is the very first English-language publication of the introduction to the Japanese edition of "Ultramarine" by Carver's widow, Tess Gallagher. A thoughtful, in-depth literary analysis that surveys themes stretching across the whole of Carver's works. Highly recommended, especially for college library collections and anyone seeking to better understand the nuances of Carver's literature.

This is an excellent cookbook - definately worth buying. I am very impressed with the variety of recipes, as well as the simplicity of instructions!! Very valuable resource!!

As Jim Logan points out in the introduction to this Inside the NFL volume, the "NFC South" are the younger brothers of the NFL family. That is because when the league went from three divisions to four in 2002 the new divisions were the ones representing the South. But the oldest teams in the division, the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans (New Jersey/San Antonio/Baton Rouge) Saints have only been around since 1966 and 1967 respectively. That explains in part why collectively this division has produced one Super Bowl champion (pay attention to what in on page 4-5 and not the chart on page 42). But because these teams are relative newcomers to the NFL young fans will find that this book provides a solid introduction to the history of each team.

The teams are arranged in alphabetical order and for three of the four teams the stories are pretty similar, beginning with season after season of losing. The exception is the Carolina Panthers, but after their surprising initial success they had some dark years as well. Consequently for most of these team histories the emphasis is on coaches and key players. Young fans who already know about Michael Vick, Julius Peppers, Deuce McAllister, and Derrick Brooks will know find out about Steve Bartkowski, Kevin Greene, Chuck Muncie, and Lee Roy Selmon (I would think they already know about Archie Manning). The history of some of these teams is so short that it seems like every head coach they have ever had gets mentioned. These teams have played very few big games, but Logan accounts for most of them so that if you root for one of these teams and your father or somebody else starts going on about what happened to the Falcons in 1981 in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Cowboys you will have something to contribute to the conversation (assuming, for the sake of argument, they allow you to talk on the subject).

In the back of the book there is more evidence of how young these teams are in NFL terms. The Stat Stuff section includes Team Records, the seven Members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame that have played for these four teams (where Eric Dickerson, Earl Campbell and Jim Taylor all earned their places because of their accomplishments with other teams), and NFC South Career Leaders (through 2002). There is also a Glossary, a Time Line, and a list of books and sites on the web where young fans can go For More Information About the NFS South and the NFL, where Logan gets a two point PAT because there are books about each of the four teams so fans of any one of these four franchises can learn a whole lot more about them. There is a black & white photograph of older stars like Tommy Nobis and Tom Dempsey, and color photographs for more recent ones like Deion Sanders and Mike Alstott. Yes, this 2004 volume is slightly out of date already when it comes to where Muhsin Muhammad and Keyshawn Johnson are playing today, but the value here for young fans are the histories Logan provides for these four teams.

I bought this book to help me with my geneological research in our family surname. This is book is exactly what the title says it is. It is a listing of all marriage records for these two states for the time period indicated. Names are alphabetical by both husband and wife. The information however, is the the couples names, the date, and the location....and nothing more. Unless you plan to do a great deal of research, you'd be just as well off if you got this from the library. It's an expensive investment for one or two names and a date....unless you sell it afterwards.
