Mr. Schlesinger is cogent and to the point. The best attack on multicultural agendas there is--from an intellectual giant. Short enough to be read in one sitting. Unfortunately, America's public schools and their hyper-ethnic curriculums will never catch on. Jesse Jackson only wishes that he could refute Schlesinger's wisdom.

Michael Hardy has given us an excellent look at the people who helped to shape Avery County, North Carolina. His compilation of historical photographs with well written descriptions is a "must have" for anyone who has Western North Carolina roots, or who enjoys learning more about Appalachian culture.

Anyone living in the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) will find this travel book to be a practical and useful tool. The author, Eleanor Berman, pairs seasonal activities and local attractions with various locales. For me, this opened my eyes to the many enjoyable short trips my family and I can take without going too far from home. The book contains telephone numbers, driving directions and suggestions for accommodations and restaurants that I likely would never have discovered on my own. My family and I have stayed in several of the book's recommended bed and breakfasts and have been delighted. I keep this book handy to refer to for travel ideas. I reccommend it highly as a thorough and "user friendly" guide to travel in the Southeast.

This is one of the best Civil War novels I've ever read. I couldn't wait to finish it

Since I live in the Hobcaw Barony area, it was with special interest that I read this book. Not much has been written about Belle Baruch, though her father Bernard is well documented in print. It was a fascinating look at Belle's life and the period. Often, nonfiction books of a historical nature are dry and tedious to read, but this one reads like a novel. Miller spent many years immersing herself in her subject, and it shows. And she doesn't shy away from the difficult questions surrounding her subject, but rather tackles them head-on. It was a joy to read, and I heartily recommend it here. If you live in this coastal area, be sure to visit Hobcaw Barony, which will add a special dimension to your enjoyment of this book.

Black- and-white photography on almost every page illustrates these brief yet fascinating overviews of the construction and operation of each tower. Carefully researched with a bibliography, a list of sources including an impressive collection of websites, and an index, The Beacons of South Carolina is a relaxing and enjoyable treasury for especially for lighthouse lovers.

I am a Beaufortonian now living in Texas. It's hard to go beyond the words of Larry Roland in the forward but this book is a must read for those of us who remain under the spell of Beaufort's charm, mystery, and history. Mrs. Helsley's attention to detail is most remarkable making this book a classic addition to both the growing scholarly and popular literature. Especially noteworthy is the manner in which she weaves the role of religion and the evolution of churches into her manuscript. Major kudos for a job well done and what will surely become THE definitive history of Beaufort.

This book comprises 132 columns that Elizabeth Lawrence wrote for the Charlotte Observer from 1957 to 1971. They were selected by garden lecturer and writer Ann L. Armstrong and Lindie Wilson, who owns Lawrence's former home in Charlotte, North Carolina. A good cross-section was chosen from over 700 columns that Lawrence wrote during her tenure at the Observer. Chapters include "Seasonal Flowers," "Bulbs, Corms & Tubers," "Trees & Shrubs," "Vegetables and Herbs, Climbers & Creepers," "Gardeners & Gardens," "Gods, Legends & Rituals," and "Bits & Pieces." Each piece runs about 2 pages and includes a wealth of horticultural information as well as vivid descriptions and observations that Lawrence was known for. Ten black & white photos of Lawrence and her garden are included. The amazing thing about these pieces are that they are as relevant today as they were over forty years ago when they were written.
