A "must" for all lighthouse buffs!Review Date: 2001-01-04
Illuminating the West CoastReview Date: 2001-03-07
The most interesting story was that of a construction crew and Coast Guard team working nearly around the clock for five days to restore the Cape Flattery lighthouse near Neah Bay in Tatoosh, Washington. Also worth noting were the descriptions of life as a lighthouse keeper, the artisanship of making the Fresnel lights, and the automation that replaced the need for human presence in these remote outposts.
As the Oregon Contributing editor at Suite101.com, I am always on the lookout for books my visitors will enjoy and will help them plan their next trip to Oregon. This one is a winner!

Inconsistent and not enough informationReview Date: 2008-07-14
Also, it is frustrating how inconsistent the information is...for example on some campgrounds he mentions how much shade is available but on others he does not. So what am I to assume about the ones that he doesn't mention the shade at all? Also, with some he comments that there are mountain views but others he doesn't. How can the reader know if there are no mountain views or if he just didn't care to mention it that time or didn't have the space to do so in the book? I feel that editing for space has ruined this book.
Don't trust this book! He gives "Rogue Elk Campground" a score of 8 out of 10 for the scenic rating and he doesn't mention it's proximity to a medium traffic highway. We drove all the way there to find that it is basically on the side of the highway. The highway dropped the scenic rating down to a 2. The highway gives Rogue Elk Campground a ton of light and sound pollution and makes it feel unsafe. Stienstra didn't mention any of this.
Untrustworthy, inconsistent book!
The maps and lay out of the book are nice and user friendly though.
Pacific Northwest Camping guide reviewReview Date: 2007-09-27
A must have book by a quality writerReview Date: 2007-10-02
We plan a trip up the California coast to Oregon, then to Washington.
We plan to tent camp all the way using his books. We did it before a few years ago and it worked out great. I strongly recommend this book or any of his books to anyone who wants to have fun, cheap, exciting adventures camping!
Our Favorite Campground Guide to the Pacific Northwest!Review Date: 2006-11-01
There are a number of directories which rate facilities, provide directions, tell you how to make reservations and give you an idea of the cost for a night's stay in a specific campground. This series gives similar basic information and then goes beyond that. This guides from Moon Outdoors actually gives you a feel of what it is like to stay in a specific campground - a bit of a narrative description and a "scenic beauty rating" for each campground plus information about nearby recreation opportunities. We like that a lot.
Have we found instances where we liked a campground more or less than the book's author? Of course. Tastes differ and things change over time. Even so, we would rather have an admittedly subjective rating of a campground's intangibles than to have nothing to go on but a recitation of facts and figures.
Are the Moon Outdoors Guides the only ones we use? No. But they are ALWAYS the first place we turn when selecting a destination campground.

Read the unabridged version -- it's much betterReview Date: 1999-12-21
That said, I don't understand this version! Compared to Jane Boulton's original adaptation (if that's what you'd call it), "Opal, Journal of an Understanding Heart," this seems gutted and meaningless. Maybe it's meant to be less sad for young children, I don't know. Read the original version.
every edition is worthwhileReview Date: 2000-04-21
That said, this edition is satisfying in itself. The book is touching and beautifully illustrated and unique. I recommend it highly, along with the other editions of the diary and everything else illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

A real "keeper" of a bookReview Date: 2006-01-03
I usually read books like this once, then trade them in. But this is a "keeper" to be read again and again.
It works on many levels and for many people. First, if you've ever thought about moving to the country, it is full of solid information on everything from wells to livestock. But it's also so full of humor and sensitivity, a true love of nature and an adventurous spirit that it makes great reading even if you're a metropolitan-ite.
The book had particular appeal to me since the author lives, and wrote about, an area not far from my home; one of my favorite places (Yamhill county, Oregon). If only she'd sell her farm to me!

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED!Review Date: 2007-11-13
As I was breezing cursorily through it, I came to a description of the author's lambs being taken away for slaughter.
Guess I was expecting a wonderful book of heart such as "Enslaved by Ducks" by Bob Tarte, where he and his wife, Linda, love their pets (at last count, in "Fowl Weather", the sequel, being 37 I believe), and deeply mourn when they experience the loss of them due to death.
So this book is not for anyone expecting a totally loving tale. I personally could not find "Peace at Heart" while raising lambs for slaughter.
Anyway, just a warning for those of you whom this might bother or disturb. It is probably very well written, but I personally will spare myself sorrowful feelings by not reading it.

unfinishedReview Date: 2006-08-09
does not have a conclusion or written ending. It is left up to the reader to gauge what happened and who or what was exactly at fault. The health providers do not get the opportunity to explain their care or according to the author their lack of it. This book was not what I thought it would be. It seems that the author blames everyone for her mothers death but does not justify that claim except to produce hospital records that are difficult for a lay person to understand. I was also bothered a lot by the multitude of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Did nobody proof read this book?

Excellent mystery (as always)...Review Date: 2005-11-16
In addition, Mac is not only dealing with his job's pressures. With his attractive partner, Dana, Mac is dealing with issues of the heart. While he has deep feeling for Dana, medical examiner Kristin Thorpe, despite her hair and sense of humor, has also caught his attention.
Terminal 9 was another good book in the McAllister Files series. Maybe it was a little slower paced then previous ones, but it still kept my attention. It was a well-written mystery and I enjoyed reading it
Another Winner from RushfordReview Date: 2005-11-08
Kooky Dr. Kristen Thorpe, local medical examiner, appeared for the gruesome task of collecting the scattered remains of the body. An autopsy would be performed, though the cause of death is painfully obvious . . . isn't it? Then again, why would an invalid man be on the railroad tracks in the middle of the night?
As Mac's instincts take over, he and his new partner Detective Dana Bennett are plunged into a twisted and bizarre investigation that lead them to suspect after suspect - and no answers. The dead man's relatives prove evasive but rouse more suspicion with each meeting. And it seems the old man was an annoyance with his constant visits to the yard where he used to work, giving unwanted advice and generally making a pest of himself.
A teenager is discovered vandalizing the old man's home. Then the place catches fire. Was it arson? Another body is found. Who is it? Every time Mac and Dana think they're closing in on some answers, they're thrown off in a different direction, and the list of suspects mushrooms.
And Mac's personal life is nearly as chaotic as the investigation. His old attraction to Dana escalates as they work together, but he is almost equally drawn, for some curious reason, to the eccentric Kristen Thorpe. When he accepts-and thoroughly enjoys-a dinner invitation from Kristen, he is more confused than ever.
Words from Mac's former partner and mentor assure Mac that God has the answers: answers to the case, his inner doubts and confusion, and the yearnings of his heart.
Terminal 9 is an engrossing read you'll find hard to put down. The twists and turns will surely keep you guessing. This is a wild ride on a merry-go-round where the brass ring is just out of reach. Another winner from Pat Rushford and her McAllister Files writing partner Harrison James. Don't wait to find this book. If you like suspense, you'll love this one.

Mystery, Suspense and Intriguing CharactersReview Date: 2005-09-03
Considered a nuisance by some at the railroad, the retiree was a regular fixture at the railroad yards during the common workday. One of the railroad workers, in particular, is filled with animosity toward Mullins. Joining the suspect list are Mullins' heirs, a successful daughter and a deadbeat son, until shortly into the investigation the victim's house burns, and the son is found dead in the rubble.
McCallister is challenged in this book to go forward without his partner who is recovering from cancer treatment. He misses his partner and the subtle reminders that came from him that God is in control of all things, even Mac's love life. As Mac fights his attraction to Bennett, she proves to be a brilliant young detective, and her abilities deliver a blow to Mac's ego, causing him to struggle on another level. When she fixes him up with the dynamic medical examiner, Mac struggles more and is fun to watch as he works himself through these situations.
Terminal is a good read for those who like police procedurals and carries the tone of one experienced in police work-for good reason. Co-author Harrison James is a supervisor of a major metropolitan Police Department and whose background includes working as an undercover narcotics agent, homicide and sexual/physical abuse detective, and he has also unforced big-game poaching laws in back-country investigations. He's also made appearances in several of today's police/crime reality shows.
Patricia Rushford has written four serial mysteries. She is an award-winning author, speaker, teacher, registered nurse and holds a Masters in counseling.
Terminal delivers with tension, conflict, a good mystery and subtle character growth. It is the third in the McCallister series, following Secrets, Lies and Alibis and Deadfall.
I couldn't put this book down!Review Date: 2005-03-01
This is the third book in a series, staring state police Detective "Mac" McAllister. In this book, Detective Mac's not only up to his ears investigating a suspicious death, that's looking more and more like a murder, but he's also struggling with feelings for his new, and very attractive female partner. If you like the kind of book that you just can't put down, this is the book for you.

A Guide to the Ni.mípu National Historic Trail Review Date: 2007-01-06
Exploring the Trail of the Nez Perce RetreatReview Date: 2000-09-20
absolutely essential, a gift to all researchersReview Date: 2002-10-09
By the very nature of the task, she has a few errors, and they can put you in harm's way, such as having you travel 1.8 miles to a crossroads in the vast emptiness of Montana's back country when the actual distance is 11.8 miles. But these errors are so few as to be remarkable in their infrequency. Overall, she takes you mile by mile, dusty crossroad by dusty crossroad, rutted mountain pass by rutted mountain path, and conducts you on an assiduously researched journey of the trail that the Nez Perce followed from their homeland in the Wallowa and Snake/Salmon country to their exile in Oklahoma.
I could give you endless specifics, but here is the bottom line: you cannot take this trip, or any portion of it, without this book. You can forget your Josephy, misplace your Haines and your Lavender, or trade your Greene and your McWhorter for extra gas money. But you cannot -- CANNOT -- take this journey without having this book on the seat next to you.
Take it from someone who stopped at every pile of stones, every remnant of rifle pit and breastwork, every old campsite and every battle and staging area; who walked the high country trails near Lolo and the lowland campgrounds on the flats below Fort Leavenworth: You absolutely must buy this book if you choose to retrace any of this journey.
The Nez Perce Historic Trail Foundation and the National Park Service should canonize this woman.
End of story.
