High Desert for the CuriousReview Date: 2004-06-14
High Desert Roses,
Significant Stories from Central Oregon
by Melany Tupper
In her second book, High Desert Roses, Significant Stories from Central Oregon, Melany Tupper has created a collection of her recent non-fiction works that cater to the curious, featuring interviews with local people, and scientists and experts from several disciplines. She reveals a fascinating palette of wonders from a region that, on the surface, appears stark and joyless.
"In my Christmas Valley home, the primroses are like the untold stories, the unresearched histories, and the wonderful surprises that are found just beyond the next sand dune of my once desolate existence here."
-Melany Tupper
High Desert Roses highlights local attractions, like Pine Mountain Observatory, the Backscatter radar facility, Sunstone Gem Area, Crack in the Ground, and the Lost Forest. We find that half of the men who explored the lunar surface also explored north Lake County, that Christmas Valley has a real, functioning Santa Claus, and the best pleistocene-age paleo site since the La Brea Tar Pits. There are stories of heroism, too, like the utter selflessness of Lucinda Schroder who saved the lives of over 100 people in the Silver Lake fire, and rancher Buck Church, who was a great grandfather when he undertook the Iditarod Trail for the first time. She uncovers the truth behind the legend of the Lost Crystal Cave, and assists biologists performing field surgery to insert tiny radio transmitters into day-old sage grouse chicks.
Melany Tupper began writing in 1994 with a book called, Trip, Nomadic in America, in which she shared her real-life experience of a life on the road in a Volkswagen bus. After moving to the high desert of central Oregon in 1999, Tupper began writing short features for newspapers and magazines around the region, with a focus on science and nature, and local history. High Desert Roses reveals a serious researcher with an intimate knowledge of libraries and archives of Oregon, and Tupper's writing comes out of a rare form of consciousness, the end product of which is keenly insightful and anything but superficial.
