For small business owners or people new to managing a smallstaff who need a fast, easy to read, and very clear guideline tohiring, paying, managing and firing employees this book is ideal. Employement law is a scary business, and ignorance can be painfully expensive. The book is well organized, comes with tabbed dividers, and spells out what to do, what NOT TO SAY OR DO, and gives a few cases to clarify meaning. No wasted words or opinions are presented, so you can find out what you need to know quickly.

I attended the U of Oregon back in the 1980s and used to do many walks around Eugene then. This book brings me back to the many walks I did then, and even more to the ones I look forward to doing next time I visit Eugene. If you love Eugene, you'll love this book!

This is yet another wonderful collection of even more wonderful short stories by Don Webb. These stories range from fantasy to cut-up to sci-fi to daily life/slipstream to other things ect. all with an overwhelming sense of wonder that I ve hitherto never encountered. But, these "tales of wonder and fantasy and such" these titles are no good! For this book is filled with a personal element that underlies every story. To me reading this felt like finding some secret treasure with each tale. Like some hidden toy long forgotten. Anyhoot these stories will not only set your spirit aflame with 'wonder' but with merriment too! As each story(almost) has something that made 'me lips smile and 'me eyes brighten. You'll probablly learn some new words too, like widdershins(rotating counter clockwise) and thyros(a staff/stick topped with a pinecone or grapes). So smile if you like but, you don't have to take my word for it ... buy this and read it fer yourself!

I own and use numerous guides to creatures of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. Dr. Snively's book is clearly among the best of the genre. Her considerable skill as an educator and her extensive experience along local seashores have combined to create an excellent guide to the marine critters in this part of the world.

Exploring the Tualatin River Basin is an unimaginably good example of the kind of guide that should be available for all parts of the world. Living in Beaverton, Oregon, we only recently (2008) re-discovered this gem and have used it to plan short rainy-weekend excursions. The descriptions, directions and photographs are outstanding. The book has inspired us to explore our home environs as we never have done before. Our compliments to the authors and photographers who have created a motivating guide to our own home river basin.

A Journey into the Mirror of Herself

Review Date: 2005-12-29
The journey to a strange land must be one of the oldest plots in literature, but it has flourished through millennia because of the infinite variations in travelers and destinations. In "Eyes of the Mirror," Margaret Emerson stakes out a route-and ultimately a destination-distinctly her own.
At a desperate, midlife juncture she embarks on a two-year stint teaching English in a public school in a remote region of South Korea. With rudimentary Korean language skills and little access to other native speakers of English, she is on her own in a culture in which everything is unfamiliar, unclear, uncertain, and often incomprehensible. She sets about her work teaching middle school girls and establishing a life for herself-furnishing and settling into an apartment; shopping for food and clothing; dealing with strangely different institutions, customs, mind-sets, all meticulously detailed in spare, clear prose. We end by experiencing with her the stripping of an individual of almost everything familiar and immersion in a context where we never know for sure what our words or actions mean to others or what they mean by their behavior toward us.
Her return to the United States turns out to be an intensification of this experience as she develops diabetes with devastating, life-threatening effects when the disease is misdiagnosed and mistreated. Now her own body becomes alien territory to her in a deepening journey into the core of her being.
This is a powerful, memorable, and ultimately inspiring book. Reading it is a journey not soon forgotten.

This is a well researched, written and illustrated history of Oregon's North Santiam River canyon through biographies of former residents buried in the community cemetery. The book is a must for local genealogists and holds fascinating stories of life in this historic mining and timber area of western Oregon. Ms. Copeland received a Marion County Historical Society award for her work.
