A Monumental Work of Historical Fur Trade Research

This massive 2 volume work was well documented, well illustrated with drawings, photos & maps, indexed and referenced. This is not another book that summarizes the same old stories with the same old characters. Through nearly a 1150 pages Mr. Kent gives us a personal portal into the everyday life at Fort Ponchartrain and surrounding area in relation to it's time in history and sets the bar higher for every future historian to attempt to match it's quality & expansive approach. Common trade items of the day are shown & discussed such as the various imported fishing hooks--but also how they were knotted! Spears, kettles, bells, tools, crooked knives, furniture, crosses, silver, axes, tomahawks, beads, decorations, weapons, rings, medals, etc all backed up in great detail by countless manifest lists, diary entries, and other documents. Nearly every aspect of the lives of these soldiers, priests, traders, carpenters, blacksmiths, middlemen, and voyageurs is meticulously laid out for us through thousands of French and English sources from around the world. Never before has a work of this scale been done that comes close to this concerning the fur trade.

Yes the price is not cheap, but considering the warehouse of information gathered, any serious reinactor, historian, or just history buff would consider the result priceless.

Mr. Semion is a walking plethora of Michigan information. He has fished the Au Sable, skied the Boynes, pheasant hunted in Grayling, hiked its thousands of miles of trails, and snowmobiled the Upper Penninsula in january. if you're looking for something to do year round, besides the obvious Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village tour, check out his book. Not only will you know where to find Detroit's historic buildings, he can tell you where to enjoy a famous coney island hot dog!

Buy This! You absolutely WILL NOT be disappointed. I bought this for my fiance as a Fathers Day/Anniversary Gift for us to record a lifetime of gardening together. It was very special and when we both looked inside to see the pages, we were so impressed to see that anything and everything that we would ever want to record is already included in these pages- from climate records to receipts! I HIGHLY recommend this journal to anyone! I would also like to note that I had some questions for the seller and as a result, I experienced the finest customer service I have ever had in my history of shopping online. She went above and beyond my expectations, from her product to her service. You've got a great thing going here HoJo! :-)

Crackles Like a .38 Special

"General Murders" is a collection of ten Amos Walker short stories that are done every bit as well as any of the Detroit P.I.'s best novels. Author Loren Estleman proves himself to every bit as effective working in the short form as he is with his novels. As the title implies, the stories mostly deal with death and murder, but they all come with a twist, most of them unforseemn and satisfying. Walker is the most Phillip Marlowe-like P.I. walking the means streets today. Any P.I. fan owes it to themselves to make his acquaintence. At at brief 230 pages, this book is a quick delight.

A stunning philosophical treatise
Helpful Votes: 22 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1997-06-26
This book is a tour-de-force from the French philospher of science, Michel Serres.

Serres argues that nature is not organised around any -single- principle of organisation, that at all levels, multiplicity abounds: that although logic and rationality have taught us much about ourselves the Universe, that such 'pockets of unity' are merely islands or order in a sea of chaos.Furthermore, we cannot really understand this sea of multiplicity which howls around us: but it can be sensed, -heard-, raging all around it, although it cannot really be -conceived-. By alternately using polemics, scientific method, poetic meditation, aesthetics and literary analysis, he shows how forms are birthed from raging Chaos.

All this results in a 'noisy' critique of Order - social theory, history, science, aesthetics, and metaphysics. In French, the word 'noise' no longer means 'noise' (which in French is 'bruit') but rather 'noise' is an archiac word which means 'clamour' or 'ruckus', (chercher noise: "kick up a fuss" or "look for a fight") and this inter-play is used throughout the book. He utilises what is obviously a huge knowledge of literature, art, philosphy and science to rigourously illustrate his thesis.

Serres proposes that philosophy's purpose is to "think the unthinkable" in the age of scientific rationality. This momentus volume, written in the 80s but only translated recently (1995), is a must-read for any serious student of philosophy, science, literature, or art. It is also of special interest to those engaged in the field of sound studies for its conception of 'noise' and the relation it contains to music (or order).

Lastly, I will quote just paragraph from the section titled 'The Chain' (p71); "Here then is the chain: white sea or white plain, background noise, surge, fluctuation of the surge, bifurcation, repetition, rhythm or cadence, vortex. The great turbulence is constituted, it fades away, it breaks. And disappears as it came. This chain is breaking, it is breaking at every point, it may always break, its characteristic is to snap. It is fragile, unstable. ... It is the chain of genesis. It is not solid. It is never a chain of necessity. Suddenly, it will bifurcate. It goes off on a tangent. It surrenders to the passing signals, the fluctuations of the sea, or some sowing of sameness. This chain is not a chain of chance either, it would remain meticulously broken. It is a chain of contingency, the recruiting takes place through tangency, by local pulls and by degrees, by word of mouth, from one mouth to another. It emerges from the sea noise [bruit], the nautical noise [noise], the prebiotic soup."

This catalogue documents 164 works on paper in the collection of The Detroit Institute of Arts ranging from the beginning of the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth century, by such masters as Albrecht Durer and Adan Elsheimer as well as an umparalleled selection of German Expressionist drawings and watercolors.

This book was also the first in a series of volumes which fully documented by providing thorough art historical research, of the Detroit Institute of Arts collection of European drawings. As I understand it, the book was published in association with Hudson Hills Press; 1987. A very large hardcover volume and printed on high-quality paper. Out of print now though.
