Great review of Mencken & his anti-puritan/big gov't thought
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-04
Bode's biography of Mencken changed my life, in that is was an introduction to the Baltimore critic Mencken's role in shaping libertarian thought and appreciation. Actually, I daydreamed back in college through a linguistics class that used Mencken's American Language textbook, but it took Bode's biography to teach me how important Mencken was to realism and the fight against puritans and Big Government pablum. While I ignored the classics in school, Bode's story of Mencken's critique of the great writers of the 20's and 30's gave me a list of books to read. As a libertarian Mencken's favorites -- Theodore Dreiser, Joseph Conrad, Sinclair Lewis, etc. -- have delighted me as much as Bode's biography. The lonely, creative individualist in Dreiser's "The Genius" and Conrad's "Victory" is the same character that Mencken is. For that matter, Ayn Rand seems to be in a similar class as Mencken. Thank God I stumbled upon Bode's book.

The Best of Maryland History!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-03
This handy 224 page compendium covers in a dozen articles the broad sweep of Maryland history from the Civil War to the mid-1960s. The Civil War section details, for example, local Confederate sentiment, bloody Antietam, failed rifle technology, and the nursing care that the Sisters of Charity gave the wounded. Additional entries discuss economic development, the Antietam Ironworks, black ironworkers, and the textile industry. Concluding chapters cover John Brown, philanthropist Margaret Williams, and the Antiwar Protest. Each article appears complete with illustrations, endnotes, and extensive bibliographies. A fine companion to the earlier Mid-Maryland: A Crossroads of History (2005). Both volumes, carefully written and skillfully edited, form rich resources for understanding some important legacies of the shared past.

A wonderful story for your children.

As a pet lover myself, I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the wonderful drawings and compelling story of Miracle Max with my own children. It was also nice to get to know a bit more about Maryland.

Maybe if my own dog would nap a bit less, she'd be ready to be a hero and protect my family as well as Miracle Max!

Viewing the historyof medicine as it unfolded
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

What a wonderful surprise when one stumbles upon a gem of a book. Miss Susie Slagle's is a wonderfully told combination of school-boy story (Johns Hopkins Medical School), history of medicine--the history of early Johns Hopkins hospital is the history of modern medicine in America--and early 20th century romance. I recommend it for all who love seeing the past through the eyes of its participants, even if fictional.

Classic images of our heritage

Masterful photography by a premier regional historian. It simply doesn't get any better than this. Without the documentary photographs of probably several thousand sites taken by the author over the last 35+ years, and his detailed knowledge of most of them, much of our heritage likely would have been lost. The photographs are distinctive, highly perceptive, often subtly iconic, and always well-crafted classic images of our heritage.

This book is the best for the money--I compared it to the Frommer's guide in the bookstore, and this one has twice as much information, and covers both states from top to bottom, including some pretty unusual attractions. Great for day trips from Baltimore, too.
