After the title, the cover mentions 150 destinations... While the information contained in this volume is accurate for the lights that I am familiar with, at the same time, the volume is not nearly as comprehensive as the recently published "The Lighthouse Handbook - New England" by Jeremy D'Entremont, which also lives on my bookshelf. Elinor's book is a nice companion to Jeremy's and it is certainly worth having both. Elinor has information on when individual lights are open, telephone numbers, etc. broken out into colored boxes, which makes this information readily spotted, whereas Jeremy's Field Guide has the same information contained in the text pertaining to each light.

Fire in the Wind is a Good Book

This book is about Meg and her backwards cousin Orin. Meg always gets in fights when she tries to stick up for Orin and her brother Paul. When a fire burns most of Prescott Falls, Maine (Meg's home town) Orin saves Meg and her brother. Meg and her brother are the only ones who know that Orin set a backfire. When Meg finds out the backfire was probably the thing that saved their barn she realizes that she was wrong when she blamed Orin for setting the fire.

I read this book for a book response project and I think you should read it too.

This book gives you a great overview of the coast, with small tidbits about the history of the individual areas. As far as I know, this is the only travel book that exclusively with the Maine coast. I wish it would have contained more information on walking tours and hiking. Overall, its a great guide.

This book outpaces many other day trip and travel guides in that it also recommends accommodations in each area, which is key when traveling with children.
The book is well designed inside and out and is destined to become a favorite in any household fond of piling in the car for adventures. Maine is a fabulous state to explore and this book is a terrific guide for anyone looking for a hike, a mountain, a lake, a place, a scenic drive and many activities of varying duration.

I AM GLAD I GREETED THE TROOPS AND READ THE BOOK. THE BOOK MADE ME THINK OF ALL THE MEMORIES I HAD OF GREETING THE TROOPS. THE BOOK BROUGHT BACK SO MANY MEMORIES.

This book probably has limited appeal, but is valuable in that it shows a parting view of an authentic New England fishing village that vanished when the hotel on Star Island was built in the 1870s. The text and photographs of the fishing village are priceless for those who have visited Star Island. A fascinating bit of history.

GOOD READING ON FISH ECOLOGY
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-22
This is an interesting, and very readable study of the problems that have caused major declines within the New England groundfishing industry, and how 2 seperate, but equally interested parties can view a subject so differently. It presents the case in a middle of the road view and throws the blame for the problem at both groups. If you ever wondered why the price of fish has become prohibitive, or how a major eco-system can be destroted while everyone talks, this is a book well worth reading. It is written in language that non-scientitsts can understand and enjoy.

Even though this book was published in the 1980's i think it is a very good book for anyone like myself who only knew that lobsters live in the ocean and they taste mighty good.

It covers all aspects of the lobster trade in and around the state of maine. It is broke down with individual chapter dealing with a specific part one chapter for the boat the gear, the baiting and such.

In the chapter dealing with the lobsters themselves i was amazed to learn that a female lobster can produce 38000 eggs at one time granted most of them do not make it but it still is empressive. In the part with the lobstermen having to deal with the different goverment agencies i thought it was funny when the IRS came in to take on the lobstermen for tax purposes they ended up having to print up a dictionary of sorts so the auditors knew what the lobstermen where talking about.

Like i said this book does not miss anything except maybe to be come more current can you imagine the on average they get 22 million pounds of lobster year in and year out.
There are even some recipes

This delightful book gives us hope that there are children out there who can entertain themselves for an entire blissful summer with no regard to televisions, computers or cell phones. Sage Miller is a thoughtful 12-year-old who is sent off to Maine for the summer by her inattentive mother who enrolls in a 6-week herb institute. (This milk-wary mother insists Sage mix juice with her morning cereal.) Sage is at first apprehensive about staying with her two great-aunts, Bea and Addie, in the family home by the shore, but she soon can't resist the joys of the natural setting and the kind people she meets. During the course of her stay with her aunts, she learns enough of her family history to be able to explain her mother's flightiness and distrust of relationships; all the while helping her to learn important truths about growing up.

The reason the book is so charming is that the characters and situations are sweetly old-fashioned, but still very real to children of today. For instance, when Sage meets a local boy, there is no hint of romance and first kisses, just friendship that readers know will continue for many summers to come. Also, instead of someone tragically drowning while balancing on the rocky shoreline, the kids spy a secret rendezvous between the town busybody spinster and an unknown suitor.

However, the story isn't all sweetness and light. Sage must deal with the loss of a father she never knew, a mother who has not been able to lovingly connect with her child, and a family history that isn't always pretty. Her stay at Heron Cove helps her to realize that, according to the author; "You do not have to give up one home to claim another".
Recommended for ages 9 - 12.

I have visited the Higgins Classical Institute and find the description outstanding. I am enjoying reading about the history of the school as well as learning more about Charleston, Maine. My great grandfather was a farmer in Charleston, Me. He attended the Institute as did his five daughters. (my grandmother and aunts.) I was a bit disappointed however that the day students are not mentioned very much. The kids in the town (many of them farmer's children and not well to do) went free as I understand it. They too contributed to the historical value of the Institute. I would like to contact the author to see if she ran across the name Benjamin Dyer, or Roxanna Dyer in her research. I am not finished reading this book but am enjoying it.
